Furman 7, Georgia Southern 0
GREENVILLE, S.C. ? The Furman men’s tennis team rolled to its fifth consecutive victory, topping the Georgia Southern Eagles, 7-0, in Southern Conference action on Sunday afternoon at Mickel Tennis Center. The Paladins (12-7, 3-0) have won 15 straight regular-season league matches, dating back to the 2007 season. The loss dropped the Eagles to 5-7 on the season and 1-3 in league play.
Furman opened the day with wins in all three doubles matches. Furman’s top doubles pair of Andy Juc and Bo Ladyman remained perfect on the season. The duo, ranked 67th in the country, picked up an 8-4 win against Joris De Weerdt and Matthew Sands. Andrei Chvetsov and Jordan Walters improved to 3-0 in conference action with an 8-3 win against Philip Prins and Gregory Bekkers.
Holding a 1-0 advantage to start singles play, the Paladins swept through the six matches in dominant fashion. Ladyman extended his winning streak to six straight with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Jayraj Jadeja at number two. Sophomore Sawyer Duncan defeated Mark Paetz, 6-2, 6-1, for his eighth consecutive victory. Senior Daniel Knause also kept his winning streak alive, defeating Gregory Bekkers, 6-3, 6-3, for his seventh straight win. Senior Andy Juc and juniors Chris Motes and Jordan Walters also tallied wins in the match.
UNC Greensboro 4, Longwood 3
FARMVILLE, Va. ? Four easy wins in singles action helped UNC Greensboro rally from an early deficit as the Spartans topped Longwood, 4-3, in men’s tennis action Sunday afternoon.
After Longwood claimed the doubles point, the Spartans won singles matches at Nos. 1, 2, 5 and 6 to come away with UNCG’s second straight win. With the victory, the Spartans raised their record to 7-4 on the season.
Orcun Seyrek raised his mark to 16-3 and won his sixth straight match when he topped Carlos Garcia deAndoain. He is 10-1 in the spring dual match season.
UNCG returns to action on Saturday when they visit Davidson for a 1 pm match.
The Citadel 6, Chicago 1
CHARLESTON, S.C. ? The Citadel Bulldog tennis team defeated the Chicago Maroons, 6-1, on Sunday, March 22 at the Earle Tennis Center in Charleston, S.C.
The Bulldogs earned the doubles point in 45 minutes as Yufo Sutantio and Michael Kociecki won the first match defeating the Maroons’ Garrett Brinker and Steve Saltarelli, 8-4. Then Josh Cook and Martin King fell to Chicago’s Mark Bonner and Troy Brinker, 8-6, leading Alberto Diaz and Derek Dickey to rally for the point. They won in a tiebreaker, 9-7, against the Maroons’ Lado Bakhutashvili and Jan Stefanski.
The Citadel’s momentum continued into singles as Sutantio defeated Chicago’s Will Zhang, 7-5, 6-1 and King owned his match against the Maroons’ Garrett, 6-3, 6-2. Diaz swung a 6-1, 6-4, over Chicago’s Troy and Dickey defeated the Maroons’ Saltarelli, 6-3, 6-1. Chicago’s Bakhutashvili challenged Kociecki in a tough match in singles two but Kociecki stayed on top winning in a tiebreaker, 6-2, 7-6(4). Tripp Larkin suffered a loss to the Maroons’ Stefanski, 6-2, 6-4.
The Bulldogs improve to 7-5, 1-1 SoCon while Chicago falls to 5-5 on the season.
The Citadel will travel to Charlotte, N.C. to matchup against Charlotte on Tuesday, March 24 at 2 p.m.
East Carolina 4, College of Charleston 3
GREENVILLE, N.C. -- The College of Charleston men's tennis team dropped a hard-fought 4-3 decison to East Carolina at the ECU Tennis Complex on Sunday.
With the win, the Pirates improved to 13-1 on the season. The Cougars fell to 5-10. The Cougars host SoCon foe Furman at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
The Cougars got singles wins from Tom Delme, Mickael Trintignac and Mickael Boyer. Delme topped Jaroslav Horvath 6-7, 6-1, 7-6 at No. 1, Trintignac beat Denis Ermilov 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 and Boyer earned a 7-6, 6-7, 1-0 decision over Henrik Skalmerud at No. 4
Tennessee Tech 4, Appalachian State 3
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - Appalachian State University men's tennis fell in a heartbreaker Sunday afternoon, as the Apps were unable to eek out a win over non-conference foe Tennessee Tech, falling 4-3. With the loss, Appalachian drops to 10-6 on the season, while Tennessee Tech improves to 6-5.
The Black and Gold started the match on a solid note, as they were able to win the early doubles point.
The duo of Bobby Lake and Lee Floyd were victorious at the number one doubles spot winning 8-2 over their competition, while Trent Constance and Peter Jacobs also earned a win at the number two spot, clinching the doubles victory for the Apps. The team of of Britton Webb and Philip Kloc dropped a tough decision at the number three spot, losing 8-6.
In singles play, Kloc defeated Mario Gutierrez in two sets winning 6-3, 6-2 at the number five spot to give Appalachian the early 2-0 advantage.
Despite the lead, Lake was unable to hold on at the number one spot, losing to Dean O'Briend 6-4, 6-3 and Constance fell as well to tie the match up.
Humblet defeated James Crawford at the number six spot winning 6-3, 6-4 to put ASU ahead 3-2, but both Jacobs and Floyd fell to their opponents in tough matches at the number two and five spots to give the Golden Eagles the win.
The Mountaineers continue with their 2009 campaign as they return home Friday March 27, to take on Wofford at 2 p.m. at the ASU Tennis Courts.
