Chattanooga, Furman Continue Play in Texas

Lady Mocs Tied for 11th after Two Rounds

AUSTIN, Texas---Chattanooga’s women’s golf team made a move early in the day, but could not maintain it as it is tied for 11th place with Texas after 36 holes at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational.  The Lady Mocs shot 310 for its second 18 holes for a two-day total of 614 and sit two shots out of ninth place which is a tie between Texas A&M and Furman at 612.

No. 14 Purdue made a strong move shooting a one-under par 287 to move from a tie for third into a tie for first with No. 2 Arizona State at 578 (+2), which shot 291 (+4) in round two.  No. 19 Arkansas slipped to third just four shots back at 582 after a six-over par 294.

Freshmen Maria Juliana Loza and Maria Salinas continue to pace the Lady Mocs shooting matching 78s on the day to stand tied for 40th at 153.  Fellow freshman Moa Duf shook off an opening round 80 to shoot a four-over par 76, the low round of the day for UTC.  She has a two-day total of 156 which places her

Sophomore Emma de Groot shot a 78 as well for a total of 155 putting her in a tie for 49th, one shot ahead of Duf.  Christine Wolf is tied for 58th a shot back of Duf at 157 after a second round 80.

Starting its round on No. 10, UTC played its front nine on the side that gave it the most problems yesterday.  The Lady Mocs made the turn tied for 10th with Tulsa and Oklahoma at +15, two shots behind Furman and Texas which were tied for eighth.

After shooting 43 through the first nine holes, de Groot bogeyed No. 2 to fall to eight over on the day.  She proceeded to record three birdies on her way in shooting 35 on her final nine.  A double bogey on six was Duf’s only blemish on her back nine while a birdie on eight, her lone bird of the day, gave her a one-over 37 for the back side.

Loza and Salinas combined for just a one-over par total through six holes on the back nine, but struggled on the way in.  With the Lady Mocs in a tie for eighth, Salinas recorded a double bogey and Loza bogeyed two of three holes as UTC dropped back into 11th.

Chattanooga did get separation from its playing partners No. 23 Arizona and UCF.  It topped the Wildcats by seven shots on the day and out-distanced UCF by 19 shots.

Purdue’s Maria Hernandez moved out of a six-way tie first after round one shooting a three-under par 69 to go to five-under par, 139, and claim a one shot lead over Arkansas’ Lucy Nunn who’s second 70 is one shot back at 140 (-4).  Purdue’s Maude-Aimee LeBlanc is another shot back in third after a 71 gives her a two-day total of 141 (-3).

Sunday’s final round will group the Lady Mocs with Furman and Texas teeing off in a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m., starting on holes 10-12.
