Lady Mocs in 11th at Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational
AUSTIN, Texas---The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s golf team is in 11th place after 18 holes at the Betsy Rawls Invitational played on the University of Texas Golf Club Friday afternoon. The Lady Mocs trail UCF by one shot for 10th place after shooting 16-over par 304.
No. 2 Arizona State leads the event following a one-under par 287. No. 19 Arkansas is in second one shot back at 288 (E), while No. 13 Vanderbilt is tied for third with No. 14 Purdue at 291 (+3).
Freshmen Maria Salinas and Maria Juliana Loza each carded three-over par 75s and are tied for 32nd. Salinas played the front nine at even par 36 before a double bogey on 10 pushed her to two over. After a bogey on 13, Salinas birdied the par five 14th hole to move back to plus two. Her bogey on 16 moved her to three over.
Loza was one-under par after a birdie on two before bogeys at four and seven gave her a one-over 37 heading into the back nine. Loza birdied the par-five 11th to move back to even, but she ended her round with three straight bogeys to shoot 75.
Emma de Groot and Christine Wolf shot twin 77s (+5). Tied for 51st, de Groot opened with a double bogey, but came back with birdies at three, four and eight to get to one-under par through 14 holes. Things went south from there shooting six-over for the final four holes.
Wolf’s round started slow with four bogeys in six holes. Back-to-back birdies were followed by a double bogey on nine to turn at four-over par. She played steady on her back nine, however, with two bogeys and another birdie to keep it together for her 77. Wolf’s 37 (+1) on the back nine was low for the team and her three birdies tied de Groot for team-high honors.
Moa Duf rounds out the UTC scoring with an 81. She was just two-over par (38) at the turn, but struggled on the back nine to finish her day at nine over.
The Lady Mocs made the turn at two-over par as a team before shooting 14-over par on the back nine. UTC recorded 12 birdies on the day, nine on the front nine.
There is a six-way tied for first place among the individual leaders. Jodi Ewart (New Mexico), Maria Hernandez (Purdue), Stefanie Kenoyer (Furman), Maude-Aimee LeBlanc (Purdue), Lucy Nunn (Arkansas) and Jennifer Osburn (Arizona State) each shot two-under par rounds of 70. There is another six-way tie for second place one shot back at 71.
The Lady Mocs played their first round with South Carolina and Arizona and topped both on the day. Ranked No. 44, Chattanooga beat the 23rd-ranked Wildcats by two shots and topped No. 42 USC by six.
The second round on Saturday will see the Lady Mocs tee off on the 10th hole beginning at 10:54 a.m. (EDT). Moa Duf will lead off for UTC as it plays with Arizona and UCF. There will be a final 18 holes played on Sunday.
