Wofford 80, Furman 55
SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Wofford College men’s basketball team made senior night memorable with an 80-55 won over Furman on Monday night at Benjamin Johnson Arena. Seniors Marcus Jackson and Matt Estep both hit three pointers in the final 21 seconds in their final home game.
Wofford is 16-13 overall and 12-8 in the conference, while Furman is 6-23 overall and 4-16 in the SoCon. The Terriers were led by Junior Salters with 18 points, Noah Dahlman with 16 points and Tim Johnson with 12 points and eight rebounds. The Paladins were led by Jordan Miller with 14 points, Brandon Sebirumbi with eleven points and Bryson Barnes with ten points and seven rebounds.
The Paladins jumped out to a ten point lead three minutes into the game. Wofford responded with a 10-0 run to tie the game with a Noah Dahlman lay-up at the 13:31 mark. Furman then scored the next four points, but were matched by Wofford with two free throws from Terry Martin and a three by Junior Salters for a 15-14 lead with 11:12 left in the first half.
Furman was able to regain the lead and had a five point advantage after a three from Connor Nolte for a 24-19 score at 5:08. Wofford was able to regain the lead at 27-26 following a three from Jason Dawson, but a minute later the Paladins held a 30-27 lead with just 1:44 left in the half. Wofford then went on an 8-0 run to close the first half with all eight points by Junior Salters.
To open the second half, the Terriers gradually pushed the lead to ten points in the first five minutes. Furman would pull within six points at the 13:27 mark, but that was as close as the Paladins would get. A jumper from Brad Loesing gave Wofford a 59-45 lead with 7:57 remaining in the game.
At the four minute mark, Tim Johnson hit a lay-up to give Wofford a 68-51 lead, which extended to 21 points at 75-21 with a bucket from Corey Godzinski. Wofford’s two seniors re-entered the game at the 1:48 mark. After a dunk from Terry Martin, Marcus Jackson hit a three with 21 seconds on the clock for a 77-52 score. Furman answered with a three from Jordan Miller with three seconds left. However the Terriers had one more shot. Brad Loesing passed the ball to Matt Estep, who took a dribble then heaved a shot that went two-thirds of the court and hit nothing but net as the horn sounded for the 80-55 final score.
With the win, the Terriers are 12-8 in the conference and have secured the first winning conference record since joining the SoCon in 1997-98. The 12 wins are the most ever for Wofford in the Southern Conference. The 16 overall wins are tied for the most by Wofford in the Division I era. The Terriers swept the season series with Furman for the first time since the 1998-99 season.
Davidson 90, Elon 78
ELON, N.C. (AP) ? Davidson is difficult enough to beat when Stephen Curry is putting up big numbers. But the rest of his teammates are clicking, too, and that's why the Wildcats once again are starting to look like a tough out in the tournaments.
Curry scored 26 points and reached the 2,500-point mark for his career, but four teammates also reached double figures Monday night to help Davidson tune up for the postseason with a 90-78 victory over Elon.
The nation's leading scorer hit the 20-point mark for the 15th straight game to lead the Wildcats (25-6, 18-2 Southern Conference), but he wasn't the only one filling up the stat sheet.
They shot 63 percent in the second half while at times revving up the potent offense that carried them within a missed 3-pointer of last year's Final Four.
Now they're ready for the ride to begin again, starting with an attempt to claim a fourth straight SoCon tournament title. They've secured the top seed for the event that begins Friday in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Bryant Barr scored 18 points, Steve Rossiter added 17, Will Archambault finished with 13 and Andrew Lovedale had 11 for Davidson, which won its third straight overall by claiming its 14th consecutive victory in the series.
Monty Sanders scored 17 points, Brett James had 16, Ola Atoyebi had 13 and Chris Long scored 10 for the Phoenix (10-19, 7-13). They only briefly led and went on to lose for the sixth time in nine games.
Yet, Elon kept things tight for most of the way, at least before the middle of the second half, when Curry and his Davidson teammates flashed the quick-strike potency that made them such a difficult draw during last year's NCAA tournament.
The Phoenix had the ball, trailing by three with about 16 minutes remaining when T.J. Douglas missed a 3-pointer that would have tied it. Curry and Barr knocked down 3s roughly 30 seconds apart to start the 18-5 run that put Davidson in control.
Curry converted a three-point play before getting his teammates involved, with Archambault capping the surge with a 3 from the left corner that extended the lead to 61-45 with just fewer than 11 minutes remaining.
Elon didn't get closer than eight the rest of the way.
Working mostly against 5-foot-9 freshman Josh Bonney, the 6-3 Curry once again showed off that sweet stroke that has made him the frequent target of opposing student sections and a bonanza at the box offices.
Curry finished 8-of-16 shooting and hit just two of his six 3-point attempts, but that was enough to silence a sold-out crowd of 1,710 that included temporary seating inside the Phoenix's intimate gym.
Curry entered needing 12 points to become the 59th player to score 2,500, and he took care of that milestone by halftime. Seconds after the Phoenix pulled within one, Curry swished a 3 from the right wing to push the Wildcats' lead to 34-30.
Elon took its only lead roughly four minutes in when Sanders' 3-pointer made it 5-4. Curry countered with a jumper from the free-throw line about 45 seconds later to put Davidson ahead to stay.

Down nine, Antonio Hanson drained a 3-pointer. The Citadel got two free throws from Cameron Wells but Sandy Perry hit a jumper to make it 44-38. After five unanswered by The Citadel, Drayton scored on a lay-in but the Bulldogs went on a 15-3 run to put the game away.
Hanson led the Eagles with 3-of-6 shooting from long distance and 14 points. Drayton scored in double-figures for the 11th straight game, 11 points, five rebounds and three assists.
