MT. PLEASANT, S.C. ? The College of Charelston women’s tennis team picked up two wins on Wednesday, downing No. 59 Minnesota, 4-3, before knocking off Lafayette, 7-0.
Caroline Newman took two of three sets in the last match to help the College of Charleston women's tennis team clinch the 4-3 win over the Golden Gophers.
After falling behind early with the loss of the doubles point, the Cougars won four singles matches to take the win. Holly Dowse defeated Alessandra Ferazzi (6-2, 6-0) at number one, while Keely Mulligan took Magdalena Wiecha at the number four spot, 6-2 and 7-6.
Nina Burgoon won number five singles with the 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 win over Jackie Sperling. Newman defeated Nitooli Wilkins 6-7, 6-3, 7-5 to clinch the Cougar victory. She was down 4-2 in the third set and came back to take the victory.
In the second match of the day against Lafayette, CofC dropped just seven games in singles play en route to the 7-0 sweep.
The Cougars improve to 16-3 overall, while Lafayette drops to 1-3.
Highlighting the action was a 6-0, 6-0 win by Nina Burgoon at number five singles.
Holly Dowse, Anna Evans, Kinsey Casey, Keely Mulligan and Amanda Schwarz also picked up the straight set wins at the singles.
Charleston is next in action Friday, Mar. 20 at 2:30 p.m. when the Cougars take on Elon in Burlington, N.C.
Chattanooga 4, Tennessee Tech 3
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Lady Mocs edged Tennessee Tech, 4-3, Wednesday afternoon at the Champions Club in non conference action.
The Lady Mocs’ Jennemieke van der Veek and Charlotte Bossy won the No. 1 doubles match 8-0. No. 3 partners Shaina Singh and Annie Green won their match 8-6 over Diana Woodcock and Alena Krutkina with Singh serving out the match at 7-6 to clinch the doubles point. That would prove to be the difference in the match for UTC.
Van der Veek posted a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 2 over Barnhill while Bossy nabbed a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 4 over Krutkina. Annie Green clinched the win for Chattanooga who improves to 3-8 on the year.
Charlotte 7, Appalachian State 0
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Appalachian State University women’s tennis was unable to hang with Charlotte Wednesday afternoon as the Black and Gold lost 7-0 to the 49ers. With the loss ASU falls to 3-10 on the season while Charlotte improves to 8-3.
In doubles play Amand Cash and Heather lost at the number one spot, dropping an 8-0 decision to the team of Ana Spivakosky and Yudeshnee Pillay, while Lindsay King and Blakeley Bean posted a valiant effort but were also unable to come up with a win losing 8-5. Rounding out doubles play, Laura Janke and Gisela Fernandez lost in a close match to their competition 7-6 in a 7-2 tiebreaker.
Prior was defeated at the number one singles spot losing to Pillay in two sets 6-1, 6-2 while Cash and Bean also faced the same fate falling to their competition at both the two and three positions.
Caroline Mauch played a solid match at the number four flight, but fell just short losing 7-5, 7-5 to Gabi Vergara, while King also had strong play at the number five spot, but was unable to earn a win in two close sets.
Fernadez was defeated at the number six singles spot to cap off doubles play.
The Black and Gold return to action Thursday March 26, as the Apps take on UC Bakersfield in Greensboro, N.C. at 2 p.m.
