Elon 5, College of Charleston 2
ELON, N.C. ? No. 66 Damon Gooch, Oscar Podlewski, Philip Nemec and Alberto Rojas all claimed singles wins as Elon topped College of Charleston for a 5-2 Southern Conference men’s tennis triumph ? the Phoenix’s sixth consecutive victory and eighth in nine matches ? Tuesday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
The Phoenix (9-4 overall, 4-0 SoCon) swept the three doubles bouts to open the day as the No. 48 duo of Gooch and Nemec stopped Tom Delme and Lukas Koncilia 8-4 at No. 1, the combo of Chase Helpingstine and Carlin Murray foiled Omer Abramovich and Steven Myers 8-5 at No. 2 and the pairing of Rojas and Cody Stauffer MacDowell came from behind to overcome Mickael Boyer and Mickael Trintignac 9-7 at No. 3.
Boyer (over Murray 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 4) and Trintignac (over Helpingstine 6-3, 7-5 at No. 5) pulled out wins in singles play for the Cougars (4-7, 2-1 SoCon). Gooch (over Koncilia 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1), Podlewski (over Abramovich 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 10-3 at No. 2), Nemec (over Delme 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3) and Rojas (over Joe Nicolazzi 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6) all emerged victorious in singles action for Elon.
Samford 4, Georgia Southern 3
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The Samford University men’s tennis team picked up its second Southern Conference victory of the 2009 campaign Tuesday as the Bulldogs rallied in singles play to earn a dramatic 4-3 win against the Georgia Southern Eagles at the Samford Tennis Center.
In Tuesday’s come-from-behind league triumph, Samford (5-9, 2-2 SoCon) registered the final two wins in singles play to tally the 4-3 victory. The Bulldogs’ Carson Kadi fought to a 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-0 win on court No. 3, while Oliver Reynolds outlasted the Eagles’ Justin Flynn 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 in the No. 6 singles match.
Georgia Southern (5-4, 1-1 SoCon) held a 3-2 advantage in Tuesday’s competition prior to Kadi and Reynolds’ heroics. The Bulldogs’ Kadi and Reynolds both picked up their third-straight singles wins in the contest.
With its victory, Samford extended its winning streak to three-consecutive matches. On Sunday, the Bulldogs’ cruised to a pair of lopsided triumphs against Murray State 6-1 and Gadsden State 7-0.
Samford won the doubles point Tuesday, but dropped three of the first four singles matches to trail Georgia Southern 3-2.
In doubles play, the Bulldogs’ duo comprised of Carl Abalos and Reynolds earned an 8-5 victory on court No. 2, while Samford’s combination of Richard Walsh and Kadi knocked off Georgia Southern’s tandem of Philip Prins and Gregory Bekkers 8-6 on court No. 3.
The Bulldogs’ Brian Dushock earned his third-straight victory in singles play Tuesday. On court No. 4, Samford’s senior from West Palm Beach, Fla., breezed to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Georgia Southern’s Alain Garrido.
The Samford men’s tennis team will next be in action Friday at 2 p.m., as the Bulldogs welcome the Louisiana Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns to Birmingham, Ala., for a non-conference matchup to be held at the Samford Tennis Center.
Jacksonville State 6, The Citadel 1
CHARLESTON, S.C. ? Martin King collected The Citadel’s lone point as he defeated Jacksonville State’s Gustavo Holz, 6-1, 6-3, but the Bulldogs fell, 6-1, to the Gamecocks Tuesday afternoon at the Earle Tennis Center in Charleston, S.C.
In doubles, Alberto Diaz and Derek Dickey were the lone Bulldogs to win as they shutout Jacksonville State’s Bernado Bachino and Holz, 8-0. Then Josh Cook and King fell to the Gamecocks’ Chris Duke and Steffen Soloman, 8-4. This left Yufo Sutantio and Michael Kociecki to clinch the Citadel point. Sutantio and Kociecki were up 7-1, only needing one more point to take doubles, but Jacksonville State’s Scott Robertson and Eduardo Saratt rallied back in a tiebreaker to defeat the Bulldogs, 9-8.
In other singles action, Frederic Petrilli loss to the Gamecocks’ Solomon, 6-4, 6-3, and Dickey fell to Jacksonville State’s Duke, 6-0, 6-1. The Gamecocks’ Saratt defeated Kociecki, 6-3, 6-3. Sutantio and Diaz battled in three sets each. Diaz fell, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, to Jacksonville State’s Bachino and Sutantio suffered a tough loss to the Gamecocks’ Robertson, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0.
Jacksonville State improves to 12-1 on the season while the Bulldogs drop to 6-5, 1-1 SoCon.
The Citadel will look to bounce back as they close their seven-game home stretch on Sunday, March 22 at 3 p.m. The Bulldogs will host Chicago at the Earle Tennis Center.
