Savannah, Ga. ? Senior Megan Jenkins won the 3000-meter run with a time of 11:08.73 and Quintin Turner won the discus throw with a mark of 147-1? as The Citadel participated in the Tiger All-Comers meet in Savannah, Ga., on March 7.
Turner’s mark is now 10th all-time in the Bulldog outdoor record books.
Coming off an injury, Katheryn Gatewood placed second in the 3000 with a time of 11:48.64 and Shaquill Smith finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 45-5?. Finishing second in the javelin was Corey Robinson, who threw a mark of 156-11. Robinson also had a personal-best record with a throw of 42-7 in the shot put.
Brendan Kight ran the 3000 for third place recording a time of 9:13.27 and Jodi Whittle had a time of 65.67 in the 400-meter hurdles for third place. Whittle now holds the school’s second best record for the 400 hurdles. Whittle, Brillyance Gilchrist-Poteat, Sarah Creel and Francesca McCrary ran the 4x200-meter relay for third place earning the fourth all-time slot and James Harris posted a mark of 6-4 in the men’s high jump, earning the 10th all-time slot.
Emily Green threw the javelin for a mark of 78-9?, good for third place, while Mia Trevino took fourth with a throw of 76-10?.
Erin Ritter finished fourth in the 1500-meter run with a time of 5:19.25. Ritter’s time improves her to fourth all-time in The Citadel’s Top 10 records. Whittle, Creel, Gilchrist-Poteat and McCrary ran a time of 50.73 for fourth place in the 4x100-meter relay, earning the 10th all-time spot.
Whittle also ran a personal best time of 15.98 for sixth place in the 100-meter high hurdles and is now third all-time in The Citadel’s record books. Theresa Johansen threw 98-3 in the shot put for sixth place while clinching the eighth all-time spot.
In the shot put, Kasandra Polson threw 33-3? to take sixth and earned the eighth all-time spot and in the discus, placed seventh with 95-5 for the ninth all-time record. Trevino earned the ninth all-time record in the shot put with a mark of 32-0.
Gilchrist-Poteat ran a time of 16:53 for eighth place in the 100 hurdles earning fourth all-time and Erinn Carter’s eighth-place finish puts her at the third all-time slot in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 70.49.
College of Charleston ? Coastal Carolina Invitational ? March 13, 14
CONWAY, S.C. ? The College of Charleston track and field team closed out competition at the Coastal Carolina Invitational on Saturday, finishing off the squad’s first outdoor meet of the 2009 season.
Top performers on day two of the invitational included Mary Zolga (Raynham, Mass.), who finished sixth in the 400-meter dash in a time of 58.30 and Alyssa D'Orazio (Haddonfield, N.J.) who placed 10th in the women’s 1500-meters in a time of 4:57.08.
Other top finishers on the day included Ariel Hatcher (Monroe, Mich.), who placed eighth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.59 and Trevor Sprague (Dunwody, Ga.), who ran the men’s 5,000-meters in 15:33.66 to finish 12th
On the first day of competition, Christian Bailey (Charlotte, N.C.), finished first in the men’s 10,000-meter run with a time of 32:06.28 and Grace Loba (Orlean, Va.) placed third in the women’s 3000-meter run in a time of 10:26.33. Kristen Wolfe (Midlothian, Va.) also had a strong finish in the 3000-meters, finishing sixth in 10:31.04.
The Cougars return to action on Thursday, March 18th when they take part in the Shamrock Invitational at Coastal Carolina.
Elon ? Coastal Carolina Invitational ? March 13, 14
CONWAY, S.C. - Emily Fournier and Amy Salek each recorded school records as the Elon track team opened its outdoor season at the Coastal Carolina/ASICS Invitational in Conway, S.C., on March 13-14.
Fournier shattered the Elon school record in the women's 3,000-meter run, crossing the finish line in 10:10.72, to finish second in the event. Her time was nearly 10 seconds faster then the previous mark set in 2007. Fournier later went on to place third in the women's 1500-meter run with a time of 4:47.31, rounding out an impressive start to her outdoor track season.
Salek, a freshman, took home the lone Phoenix title in the women's 400-meter run. Her time of 55.95 also shattered the previous school record by over two seconds and was more than a full second faster than the second-place finisher in the competition. Teammate Melissa Turowski also placed eighth in that event with a time of 59.48. Salek later went on to finish fifth in the women's 200-meter dash crossing the line in 26.05.
Freshmen Alyssa Girvin placed fourth in the women's discus throw and was the 3rd best collegiate overall with her throw of 40.18 meter (131-10 feet). Teammate Justine Robertson finished the competition in seventh-place (38.33 meters). Robertson also went on to finish fifth in the women's shot put with a best heave of 11.83 meters
Sophomore Veronica Day placed second in the women's long jump with a best leap of 5.39 meters (17-08.25 feet). Teammate Monique Vines put forth an eighth-place finish, jumping 5.15 meters. Day went on to place fifth in the women's triple jump with a distance of 11.33 meters (37-02.25 feet). Lauren Hawkesworth followed Day in the triple jump finishing in seventh place with a leap of 11.17 meters.
The Elon relay teams put forth an impressive day of competition finishing in fifth and second. The 4x100-meter relay team consisting of Dana Cataldo, Monique Vines, Veronica Day and Amy Salek started things off crossing the finish line in 49.15, good enough for fifth-place overall. The 4x400-meter relay team consisting of Melissa Turowski, Andrea March, Jennine Strange and Amy Salek placed second with a time of 3:58.36.
Junior Andrea March placed sixth in the women's 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.47.
Sophomore Jacqueline Beliveau placed fifth in the women's 400-meter hurdles, finishing the race with a time of 1:05.31.
Junior Jennine Strange placed 2nd in the women's 800-meter run with a time of 2:16.98.
Rounding out the competition for the Elon track team was senior Colleen McCarthy who finished second in the women's 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:55.94.
The Phoenix will return to action March 27-28 when it travels to Raleigh, N.C. for the Raleigh Relays.

Orangeburg, S.C. ? Austin Ditzhazy won the javelin, Quintin Turner placed first in the discus and Brendan Kight, Zach Johnson, Frank Dioguardi and Christopher Morgan ran the 4x800-meter relay for first place as The Citadel participated in the Robert “Jet” Johnson Relays on March 14 at the Larry H. Dawkins Track Facility in Orangeburg, S.C. The Bulldogs also had several performances that placed in the top 10 to lead the men’s team to third place with 85 points and the women’s team to fifth with 39 points.
Ditzhazy also set a personal-best record with his mark of 152-11 in the javelin and Turner threw his personal-best in the discus with a mark of 148-0, earning the 10th all-time spot in The Citadel’s record books. The men’s 4x800-meter relay team ran for the ninth all-time record with a time of 7:56.13.
The women’s 4x100-meter relay shuttle hurdle team which includes Brillyance Gilchrist-Poteat, Jodi Whittle, Francesca McCrary and Erinn Carter set a school record finishing fourth overall with a time of 59.51. James Harris and Aaron Overton tied for second place in the high jump with a jump of 6-0?.
Alex Anderson ran a personal-best record of 15:52.51 in the 5000-meter for third place and Chris Fallis finished third in the 1500-meter with a time of 4:11.58. The men’s 4x110-meter shuttle hurdle team that consisted of Jamel Brown, Overton, Brian Baize and Caleb Moore placed third with a time of 1:07.61 for the fourth all-time spot. Emily Green took third in the javelin with a personal-best record throw of 105-11 earning the eighth all-time record and then she threw for fifth place in the shot put with a mark of 32-11.
Sarah Stierwalt ran a personal-best record of 19:31.62 in the 5000 for fourth place, earning the seventh in The Citadel’s top 10 records. Megan Jenkins, Carter, Katheryn Gatewood and Sarah Strickland ran the 4x800-meter relay for fourth place with a time of 10:06.97, earning the second all-time spot. Matt Earls took fourth in the javelin with a mark of 136-9 and Joe Tkach placed fourth with a time of 4:14.41 in the 1500-meter run.
Erin Ritter ran the 5000 for a fifth-place finish with a time of 20:31.90 and P.J. Wasilchak ran a personal-best record in the 5000 for sixth place with a time of 16:26.79. Whittle also ran for sixth place in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 59.26.
Shaquill Smith took seventh in the high jump with a mark of 5-8? and Theresa Johansen threw a personal-best in the discus with a mark of 103-11 for seventh place and earned the seventh all-time record.
Gilchrist-Poteat set a personal-best record running a time of 15.95 in the 100-meter hurdles, clinching the third all-time spot in the Bulldogs’ record books.
“I am very proud of how the team dealt with the weather conditions,” said head coach Jody Huddleston. “The week before, it was sunny and 75 degrees and this week it was overcast and 45 degrees. For us to win three events and to have several top ten performances along with some very good personal-best performances is very rewarding for them. They did an awesome job.”
Georgia Southern ? Bulldog Relays ? March 14
ORANGEBURG, S.C. - Georgia Southern Track & Field got its outdoor season underway with a second-place finish in the Bulldog Relays Saturday.
Shaunta Hamilton (Macon, Ga.) and Demetrise Anthony (Manchester, Ga.) finished one, two in the long jump. Hamilton won the second event of the day for the Eagles with a jump of 5.62 meters. Anthony finished just behind her with a mark of 5.51 meters. The Manchester, Ga., native also got things started for the Eagles with a fifth-place finish in the first event of the day the 100-meter dash.
Georgia Southern swept the high jump finishing one, two and three. Melanie Trumbo (Lilburn, Ga.) came in first with a jump of 1.65 meters. Trumbo also finished fourth in the javelin throw with a mark of 32.32 meters.
Jasmine Lightning (Dacula, Ga.) finished second in the high jump with a mark of 1.60 meters and Alex Cassagnol (Augusta, Ga.) finished third with a jump of 1.55 meters.
Amanda Spivy (Pembroke, Ga.) won the third event of the day for the Eagles with a discus throw of 36.71 meters.
Laura Fuller (Cartersville, Ga.) had a stellar day finishing second in the 1500-meter run and was a member of Georgia Southern's second place 4x800-meter relay team. Fuller completed the 1500 with a time of 4:50.53 which ranks second all-time at Georgia Southern.
Kassi Lee (Elberton, Ga.) came in third in the 5000-meter run Saturday with a time of 19:26.54.
Senior Kristin Olson (Senoia, Ga.) gave the Eagles another top-three finish coming in third in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.51 and finished first in heat one. Olson also ran in the 100-meter hurdles finishing with a time of 16.81.
Georgia Southern had a solid day in the relay events finishing in the top five in all four relays. The Eagles finished fifth and less than a second behind the fourth-place team Georgia State in the 4x100-meter relay.
Georgia Southern followed the 4x100 relay with a third-place finish in the 4x200 with a time of 1:44.33.
The Eagles pulled in another second-place finish in the 4x800 finishing less than a two seconds behind the winner Georgia State.
Freshman Sarah Herndon (Statesboro, Ga.) picked up two points for Georgia Southern with a seventh-place finish in the shot put.
Samford ? Southern Invitational ? March 14
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The Samford University track and field teams fought through the dismal rain, cold and wind Saturday as it competed in its first outdoor meet of the season at Birmingham-Southern. The Bulldogs placed 12 athletes and a relay team in the top three of their respective events at the 2009 Southern Invitational hosted at Panther Stadium.
Six student-athletes and the women's 4x400-meter relay team won their respective events. Hillary Neal was the highlight of the meet with a near-regional qualifying time as she won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:10.50. She also anchored the winning 4x400 relay team (3:52.96), joined by Ashley Flowers, Ashley Dance and Cori Christensen.
Patrick Wells won the men's vault, clearing 15-5 for his fourth win in five competitions so far this season while Eduardo Padrino (12-05?) and Donald Cooper (11-07?) took sixth and seventh, respectively. Mary Barron took second place in the women's pole vault, clearing a height of 10-11?. Deanna Zidar (11:32.54) and Cameron Bean (9:17.38) won the women's and men's 3000-meter steeplechase with personal bests while Scott Cope placed fourth with a time of 10:08.32.
Thomas Oliver won the shot put in his Samford debut with a toss of 193-4. Cavan Corcoran also took second in the men's 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.29. Morgan Tyler finished third in the women's long jump with a leap of 16-08?. Cope finished second in the 1500-meter run with a personal best of 4:03.10 while Patrick Ollinger grabbed sixth place with a personal best of 4:05.05. Jessica Van Ausdall (4:45.27) and Cori Christensen (4:50.65) finished second and third in the 1500, respectively.
"This was a very successful meet," Samford head coach Rod Tiffin said. "I am always amazed at how these young people can come out in such lousy conditions and compete at or close to their personal best. It shows that we are in a good place with our training and getting sharper each week as the level of competition rises. We are going into Spring Break on a high note and hope to pick it right up again in Tuscaloosa in a couple of weeks."
Ryan Fee and Chris Davis both threw personal bests in the hammer throw. Fee has a toss of 124-2 and Davis had a toss of 114-0. Kyle Kirby threw a distance of 95-1. All three took eighth, ninth and tenth place, respectively, in the event. Davis also took second place in the shot put with a distance of 45-01?. Fee and Kirby took 11th and 15th places, respectively in the men's discus event with tosses of 115-3 and 102-0.
Asa Ackerson took ninth in the men's long jump with a leap of 18-10. Christy Myers placed eighth in the women's high jump with a leap of 4-9? while Elyse Rippe (4-7?) and Christian McGuire (4-6) took 10th and 11th place, respectively.
Ashley Dance placed seventh in the 100 dash with a time of 12.82 while Christian McGuire (1:01.11), Sarah McGough (1:02.82), and Elyse Rippe (1:05.84) took fifth, eighth and 11th places, respectively, in the 400-meter dash. Dance also took 10th place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.47 while Ashley Flowers placed 11th with a time of 26.67. Will Denton placed seventh in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:58.39.
Samford will compete next in the annual Alabama Relays, March 26-29.
