SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Furman senior Lauren Tomory has been named Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for all matches from March 9-15, the league office announced Tuesday. Tomory went 3-0 at No. 5 singles last week and was 2-1 in doubles play as the Lady Paladins went 2-1 on the west coast last week, defeating Portland (7-0) and San Francisco (4-3) after falling to San Diego (4-3). She becomes the third different Lady Paladin to win the award this season. The Player of the Week award is voted on by the league’s sports information directors.
A native of Vicenza, Italy, Tomory knocked off Alexandra Demidova of San Diego, 7-5, 6-4 to start the week. She posted a straight set win over Portland’s Stefanie Doolittle (6-0, 6-1) and a three-set victory over San Francisco’s Cecilia Gratian (6-4, 5-7, 6-1). Tomory is now 7-4 in singles play this season. She teamed with Jennifer Betts at No. 2 doubles to post a pair of doubles victories over Portland and San Francisco. Tomory’s only loss on the week came in doubles play, as she and Betts dropped an 8-2 decision to San Diego’s Tammy Kevey and Maja Sujica.
Tomory was also named Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week twice during the fall.
Also nominated for this week’s award was College of Charleston’s Caroline Newman, Davidson’s Virginia Berry, Elon’s Elisa Simonetti, Georgia Southern’s Shea Huxtable and Samford’s Andrie Meiring.
