SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? College of Charleston’s Kristie Shifflett was named Southern Conference Softball Player of the Week while Georgia Southern’s Brianna Streetmon was named Pitcher of the Week for all games played from Mar. 9-15, the conference office announced Monday. The awards are voted on by the league’s softball sports information directors.
Shifflett, a junior, led the Cougars in batting last week with three home runs, eight hits and 11 RBIs in only 15 at-bats as the Cougars split a two-game series with Charlotte and won 1-of-3 at Samford. She also recorded a .533 batting average and a 1.118 slugging percentage.
The Virginia Beach, Va., native had a pair of sterling performances on the week in CofC’s victories over Charlotte and Samford. In the game against the 49ers, Shifflett hit two home runs, one of which was a grand slam, and drove in five RBIs in only three at-bats as the Cougars shutout Charlotte, 9-0. Trailing 4-0 in the sixth inning against Samford, Shifflett clubbed her second grand slam of the week to tie the game at four in a game the Cougars would go on to win, 6-4. For the game, Shifflett went 4-for-4 with four RBIs.
Streetmon improved her season record to 5-4 as the Eagles swept Appalachian State over the weekend. The sophomore threw a pair of complete games as GSU won 5-4 and 3-2. In 14 innings of work Streetmon struck out six while allowing only three earned runs and six hits. The Winder, Ga., native had a 1.50 ERA in the two games and allowed only one hit and one earned run in the 3-2 victory.
Also nominated for Player of the Week were Samford’s Katie England, Georgia Southern’s Robyne Siliga and Appalachian State’s Michelle Lighton.
Also nominated for Pitcher of the Week were Samford’s Amanda Barrs and College of Charleston’s Alexa Datko.
