Western Carolina 8, College of Charleston 2

 

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - Logan Bland hit a three-run homer and Chris Masters delivered a quality pitching performance leading Western Carolina to an 8-2 win over College of Charleston in Southern Conference baseball action before 435 at chilly Patriots Point Stadium on Saturday.

 

Western Carolina, which evened the weekend series at 1-1, improved to 11-3 overall and 4-1 in league play.  The Cougars fell to 12-3 and 4-1.  The series finale is Sunday at 1:00.

 

Bland's three-run shot to left in the sixth inning gave the Catamounts a 4-0 lead.

 

Charleston cut the margin to 4-2 with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings.  Joey Bergman had an RBI single in the sixth and Cole Rakar scored on a wild pitch in the seventh.

 

The Catmounts, which outhit Charleston 10-3, put the game away with a four-run eighth inning. Matt Johns' scored on a throwing error, Ross Heffley delivered an RBI single and Brent Greer capped the scoring with a two-run single.

 

Master (2-1) picked up the win surrendering two runs on just three hits over 6 2/3 innings of work.  He walked four and struck out seven.  Garrett Ozar blanked Charleston over the final 2 1/3 innings for his first save of the season. Tom Schiller (3-1) suffered the loss.

 

Greer finished with four hits and three RBI, while Heffley and Johns collected two hits each. Mike Hentz, Bergman and Rakar had hits for the Cougars.

 

 

Elon ? Davidson, Postponed

 

ELON, N.C. -- With rain in the forecast all day, the Southern Conference baseball game scheduled between the Elon Phoenix and Davidson Wildcats for Saturday at 1 p.m. has been postponed.  The squads will now play a doubleheader beginning at noon on Sunday from Latham Park.

 

 

UNC Greensboro ? Georgia Southern, Postponed

 

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Georgia Southern-UNC Greensboro baseball game on Saturday has been cancelled due to rain.

 

The two teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday, starting at 1 p.m. Game three of the series cannot be made up due to conference rules.

 

 

Wofford ? Fordham, Postponed

 

SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Wofford baseball game scheduled for 2:00 pm on Saturday, March 14 has been postponed due to rain. The Terriers will play Fordham twice on Sunday, beginning at 2:00 pm. In addition, the teams will play on Monday night at 7:00 pm to complete the four game series.

 

On Sunday, the first game of the doubleheader will be seven innings, followed by a nine-inning contest. Fordham won the first game of the four game series on Friday afternoon.

 

 

Furman ? Samford, Postponed

 

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Rain in the South Carolina Upstate has forced the postponement of Saturday’s Furman-Samford baseball game, which has been rescheduled as part of a Sunday doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Latham Stadium, Furman head coach Ron Smith has announced.

 

Furman captured Friday’s series opener 11-2.  Both teams are 2-2 in Southern Conference play heading into Sunday’s twinbill.

 

 

Appalachian State ? The Citadel, Postponed

 

BOONE, N.C. - Saturday's baseball game between Appalachian State and The Citadel has been postponed due to rain. The contest will be made up as part of a doubleheader beginning at noon on Sunday at ASU's Beaver Field at Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium.
