College of Charleston 6, Appalachian State 1
CHARLESTON, S.C. - Capping off a four match road swing, Appalachian State University women’s tennis dropped their second Southern Conference match of the season falling to the College of Charleston Friday afternoon 6-1. With the loss the Black and Gold drop to 3-10 on the season and 0-2 in league play, while CofC improves to 9-3 overall and 2-0 in SoCon action.
The Cougars won all three doubles matches on the afternoon.
Amanda Cash and Caroline Mauch finished first at the number three doubles spot losing to their competition 8-0, while the team of Gisela Fernandez and Olivia Stannard faced the same fate, dropping an 8-1 decision to Laura Borza and Anna Lee Evans at the number two position. The duo of Blakeley Bean and Laura Janke were also unable to earn a win at the three flight, falling 8-2.
Junior Caroline Mauch won Appalachian’s lone win in singles play at the number four spot, defeating Evans in three sets.
Bean lost at number one to Borza in two sets, while Cash and Heather Prior were also defeated at the two and three positions in two sets and Lindsay King and Stannard could not pick up victories at the five and six spots.
Furman 7, Portland 0
SAN DIEGO, Calif. ? The Furman women’s tennis team rebounded from yesterday’s close loss to defeat Portland, 7-0, at the University of San Diego Invitational at the USD West Tennis Courts on Friday afternoon. The Lady Paladins (4-6) did not lose a match, winning all six singles matches in straight sets. With the loss, Portland drops to 5-6 on the season.
Furman got off to a quick start, earning the team doubles point with wins at all three doubles positions. Senior Laura Gioia and sophomore Monica Arguello lost only one game against Stephanie Fuchs and Megan Sporndli at number one. Sophomore Jennifer Betts and senior Lauren Tomory secured the point for the Lady Paladins with an 8-3 win over Anna Gullickson and Lacey Pflibsen at number two. Junior Jessica Preeg and freshman Susan Bitetti won their fourth straight match with an 8-6 win at the third position.
Gioia continue her dominant play as of late at the top singles spot. Gioia, 6-3 on the season, topped Sporndli, 6-2, 6-1 to win her sixth consecutive match. Arguello defeated Pflibsen, 6-1, 6-1, at number two singles to push the Furman lead to 3-0. Bitetti delivered the match-clincher with a 6-2, 6-1 defeat of Jenna Tanzer at four singles. Betts, Tomory and Preeg also posted singles wins.
The Lady Paladins will conclude the USD Invitational against San Francisco Saturday at 1 p.m. EST.
