Appalachian State 7, The Citadel 0

 

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Head Coach Bob Lake notched his 100th career win, and Appalachian State University men’s tennis earned a stellar win over SoCon foe The Citadel Thursday afternoon, handily defeating the Bulldogs 7-0 at the Earle Tennis Center. The win puts the Apps at 1-1 in league play and at 9-3 on the season, while The Citadel drops to 6-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

 

ASU easily ran through doubles action, winning all three matches.

 

The duo of Lee Floyd and Bobby Lake defeated Yufo Sutantio and Michael Kociecki 8-5 at the number one doubles spot, while teammates Peter Jacobs and Trent Constance followed suit beating Alberto Diaz and Derek Dickey by the same score at the number two spot. Keeping Appalachian perfect in doubles play, the team of Britton Webb and Philip Kloc were victorious at the number three spot, winning 8-4.

 

Lake continued his strong play at the number one singles flight, winning 6-4, 6-2 over Sutantio, and Constance took his opponent to three sets. but was able to earn another win for the Black and Gold.

 

Jacobs’ and Floyd’s matches also were pushed to three sets, but both were victorious at the number three and four positions as Jacobs rallied a comeback after falling behind in the first set and Floyd did the same.

 

Kloc and Alain Humblet capped off a spotless afternoon for the Mountaineers, defeating their competition 6-3, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-0 to help give ASU the win.

 

The win over The Citadel is ASU’s third straight dating back to 2005 season.

 

Appalachian continues with its road stint, as the Apps take on the College of Charleston, Friday March 13 at 2 p.m.

 

 

College of Charleston 5, Chattanooga 2

 

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. -- The College of Charleston men's tennis team opened the Southern Conference portion of its schedule with a 5-2 win over visiting Chattanooga at the Tennis Center at Patriots Point on Thursday.

 

Charleston, which improved to 3-6 and 1-0, plays host to Appalachian State at 2 p.m. on Friday. UTC fell to 1-11 and 0-5.

 

In singles play for Charleston, Tom Delme downed Pavel Vostikov 6-1, 7-6 at No. 2 singles, Mickael Boyer won over Alex Butnarcuic 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3, Mickael Trintgnac defeated Dakota Pate 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 and at No. 5 singles Joe Nicolazzi won a hard fought 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 decision over Rick van de Bovenkamp.

 

Charleston won 2-of-3 doubles matches. Omer Abramovich and Steven Myers teamed at No. 2 to beat Butnarcuic and Sam Parfitt, 8-1. At No. 3, Boyer and Trintignac downed van de Bovenkamp and Pate, 8-3.

 

 

Davidson 4, Indiana State 0

 

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Junior Eric Noble and sophomore Walker Lyons teamed up to win their doubles match and then each scored singles wins at their respective positions in leading the Davidson men?s tennis team to a 4-0 win over visiting Indiana State on Thursday afternoon at the Knobloch Tennis Center.

 

Davidson rebounded from a 4-3 defeat on Monday to St. Louis to score its fifth win of the season in improving to 5-7 overall. Indiana State remains winless, sitting at 0-8 for the 2009 campaign.

 

Noble and Lyons, teaming up for the fourth time this year at the No. 1 doubles spot, halting their two-match losing streak by scoring an 8-4 decision over Jon Sigurdsson and Josh Smith. Davidson would go on to capture the No. 2 and 3 positions to earn the doubles point to start the match.

 

The duo then earned the Wildcats? second and third points in singles play with wins at No. 1 and 2 in singles play. Noble cruised to his sixth win of the season, and fourth in the last six matches, with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Mpiloenhle Migogo.

 

Lyons started slow, dropping a 6-3 decision in his first set, but regrouped to even things up with a 6-3 win of his own to force a third set against Smith. The sophomore then pushed on, earning a 6-2 decision in the third set to score his fourth singles win of the year, and first at the No. 2 singles spot.

 

Freshman Calum Gee sealed the win by taking a 6-2, 6-4 win over Milos Pavlovic at No. 4. He sits at a team-best 7-5 this year in singles play.

 

Earlier, Gee teamed up with senior Scott Myers at the No. 2 doubles position to earn a thrilling 9-8 tie-breaker win. The duo have a team-high three doubles wins together.

 

Picking up the other doubles win for Davidson was the team of junior David Warren and Carter Braxton, who netted an 8-1 victory over Michael Wenham and Blake Douglas at No. 3.

 

Davidson takes the weekend off, before heading to Greenville, S.C. to play SoCon-foe Furman, Mar. 21 at 1:30 p.m. The OCats sit at 1-1 in league matches.
