The Citadel 6, Chattanooga 1
Charleston, S.C. ? The Citadel tennis team gained their first Southern Conference win when they defeated the Mocs of Chattanooga, 6-1, on Wednesday afternoon at the Earle Tennis Center in Charleston, S.C.
The Bulldogs collected the doubles point when Derek Dickey and Alberto Diaz defeated Chattanooga’s Rick Van de Bovenkamp and Dakota Pate, 8-3, and Martin King and Josh Cook posted a 8-5 win over the Mocs’ Alexandru Butnarcuic and Sam Parfitt. Chattanooga’s Peter Sauska and Pavel Vostrikov rallied in a tiebreaker and stole the win over Yufo Sutantio and Michael Kociecki, 9-8.
In singles, Dickey tallied the second point for The Citadel after defeating the Mocs’ Pate, 6-4, 6-1. Then Frank Larkin dominated his match against Gordan Pudell winning, 6-0, 6-3. Diaz picked up the fourth Bulldog point for the win against Chattanooga’s Butnarcuic, 7-5, 6-1. King earned another win on the day by defeating the Mocs’ Van de Bovenkamp, 6-2, 6-4.
Sutantio rallied in a competitive match with the Mocs’ Sauska. Sauska took the first set, 6-4 and Sutantio came back and won the second set, 7-6, claiming the point in a 10-8 tiebreaker. Kociecki fell to Chattanooga’s Vostrikov, 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 tiebreaker.
The Bulldogs improve to 6-3, 1-0 SoCon while the Mocs fall 1-10, 0-4 SoCon.
Furman 6, South Carolina State 1
CHARLESTON, S.C. ? The Furman men’s tennis team finished its non-conference season on a high note, defeating South Carolina State, 6-1, on Wednesday afternoon. The Paladins (9-7) have won three of their last four matches, all of which were played on the road. Furman has a week off before opening Southern Conference play at Appalachian State.
The Paladins got off to a strong start, winning all three doubles matches to earn the team point. Sawyer Duncan and Jordan Walters teamed together for the first time this season, defeating Ivan Milivojevic and Tamas Dobrotka, 8-6, at number two. Andrei Chvetsov and Chris Rhyne earned their sixth win of the season with an 8-3 defeat of David Grund and Jan Langer.
In singles action, Duncan was victorious for the fifth consecutive match, defeating Grund 6-1, 6-1, to improve to 12-2 on the season. Senior Andy Juc improved his record to 7-6 on the season at the top singles spot, knocking off Milivojevic, 6-2, 6-2.
Chvetsov won his third consecutive match with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Langer at number six. Motes and Walters also picked up singles wins to help Furman claim the victory.
The Paladins will be back in action on Wednesday, March 18 when they travel to Appalachian State to open league play. The match is slated to begin at 2:30 p.m.
Jacksonville State 6, UNC Greensboro 1
JACKSONVILLE, Ala. ? Orcus Seyrek was a double-winner on the afternoon, but it wasn’t enough as UNC Greensboro saw its three-match winning streak halted in a 6-1 loss at Jacksonville State in Wednesday afternoon men’s tennis action.
Seyrek teamed with Arsel Kumdereli for a win over Bernardo Bachino and Gustavo Holz, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles. He then topped Scott Robertson at No.
1 singles, 6-2 and 7-5, to earn UNCG’s lone point of the afternoon.
The freshman from Istanbul, Turkey is now 13-3 overall and 8-1 in the spring season. He and Kumdereli are also 9-3 in doubles play.
UNCG returns to action next Thursday at home when it hosts East Carolina at 2:30 pm.
Clemson 7, College of Charleston 0
Clemson, S.C. -- The Clemson men's tennis team defeated the College of Charleston 7-0 in a men's intercollegiate tennis match at Hoke Sloan Tennis Center on Wednesday.
With the win, Clemson improved to 7-6 overall. The Cougars fell to 2-6 this spring. The Cougars host Chattanooga at 2:00 on Thursday.
Clemson clinched the doubles point when Gera Boryachinskiy and Robert Pietrucha defeated Omer Abramovich and Steven Myers of the College of Charleston 9-8 at the number two position.
Clemson's Ike Belk defeated Joe Nicolazzi at number six singles 6-2, 6-4 to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead. Kevin Fleck gave the Tigers a 3-0 advantage when he defeated Tom Delme at number four singles 6-3, 6-1.
The Tigers clinched the match when Kevin Galloway defeated Mickael Trintignac 6-3, 6-2 at number five singles.
Clemson won the top three singles positions. Carlos Alvarez of Clemson defeated Omer Abramovich 6-1, 6-3 at number one singles. Rok Bizjak defeated the Cougars' Michael Boyer 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 at number three singles to give the Tigers a 6-0 lead. Boryachinskiy won over Lukas Koncilia of the College of Charleston 7-6, 6-2 at the number two singles position.
This was the 33rd meeting between the two schools on the tennis courts. Clemson now leads the series 23-10. The series first started in the 1930 season.
