SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Western Carolina senior guard Lauren Powell has been named Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for all sporting events played from March 4-10, the league office announced Wednesday.
Powell sports a 3.862 grade point average in nutrition at WCU. Last weekend at the SoCon Women’s Basketball Championship, Powell averaged 11.7 points and 5.7 rebounds per game in three games. The Asheville, N.C., native had her most productive game when it counted the most, however, in the championship game against College of Charleston. Besides tallying 19 points and seven rebounds, Powell prolonged the game twice for the Lady Catamounts when it looked like the Cougars were poised to win.
During the first overtime, Powell drew a foul and converted two free throws with 1.8 seconds left to send the game to a second overtime. During the second overtime she scored five points over the final 1:39 to erase a Cougar lead and send the game to a third and deciding overtime, which WCU won, 101-87, to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
Powell’s selection marks the third different player on the Lady Catamounts’ basketball squad to earn the honor this season, with Brooke Johnson (three times) and Kristen Feemster being the other two.
Also nominated for this week’s award were UNC Greensboro softball player Emily Akiyama, Davidson baseball player Matt Webb and Elon women’s tennis player Whitney Butcher.
