SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? UNC Greensboro freshman Lucy Dougherty has been named Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for all matches from March 2-8, the league office announced Wednesday. Dougherty went 3-0 at No. 5 singles last week and was 3-0 in doubles play as the Spartans downed Wyoming (6-1), Air Force (4-3) and Northern Colorado (5-2).  The Player of the Week award is voted on by the league’s sports information directors.

The Melbourne, Australia, native picked up wins over Wyoming’s Jamie Nelson (6-2, 6-3), Air Force’s Samantha Sarkis (6-3, 1-6, 6-4) and Northern Colorado’s Jodi Ciarvella (6-2, 6-2) at No. 5 singles where she is 4-0 this season. Dougherty, who helped the Spartans run their win streak to four, also picked up three wins at No. 2 doubles with Valerie Behr.  Dougherty and Behr have now won each of their last four matches as doubles partners.

Also nominated for this week’s award was Chattanooga’s Charlotte Bossy, Elon’s Whitney Butcher and Georgia Southern’s Shea Huxtable.
