Furman 4, Princeton 3
PRINCETON, N.J. ? The Furman men’s tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision against the Princeton Tigers at Jadwin Gym on Saturday afternoon. The Paladins (7-7) and Tigers (5-3) split the singles matches, but Princeton earned the critical doubles point, which proved the deciding factor in the match.
Furman tandem of Bo Ladyman and Jordan Walters defeated Ilya Trubov and Ryan Kim, 8-2, at number two doubles for the duo’s eighth win of the season. Princeton managed to pull out 8-5 victories at both number one and three doubles to earn the overall team point.
In singles action, Ladyman earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory over George Carpeni at number two. Senior Daniel Knause was also victorious for the Paladins, defeating Kim, 6-3, 6-2, at number four. Sophomore Sawyer Duncan improved to 10-2 on the season with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Ravi Yegya-Raman at number six.
Elon 7, Chattanooga 0
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. ? No. 75 Elon swept its way through all six singles flights and all three doubles positions, fashioning a 7-0 Southern Conference men’s tennis victory over Chattanooga ? the Phoenix’s fourth consecutive triumph ? Saturday afternoon at the UTC Tennis Courts.
In singles competition, No. 56 Damon Gooch (over Peter Sauska 7-5, 6-4 at No. 1), Oscar Podlewski (over Pavel Vostrikov 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2), Carlin Murray (over Alex Butnarcuic 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3), Philip Nemec (over Rick van de Bovenkamp 5-7, 6-2, 10-8 at No. 4), Chase Helpingstine (over Dakota Pate 6-2, 6-5 at No. 5) and Alberto Rojas (over Gordon Rudell 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6) all emerged victorious.
On the doubles scene, the No. 40 combo of Gooch and Nemec (over Sauska and Vostrikov 8-6 at No. 1), the pairing of Murray and Helpingstine (over Butnarcuic and van de Bovenkamp 8-6 at No. 2) and and the duo of Rojas and Cody Stauffer MacDowell (over Rudell and Pate 8-2 at No. 3) all continued their winning ways.
With its victory, Elon (7-4 overall, 2-0 SoCon) improved to 26-3 in its last 29 regular season SoCon contests over the past four springs since suffering through an 0-10 conference campaign in 2005.
UNC Greensboro 7, Chattanooga 0
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn, ? UNC Greensboro earned its first league win of the season and moved to 5-2 overall with a 7-0 win over Chattanooga in men’s tennis action Sunday afternoon.
The Spartans won all six singles matches, including three three-setters, and two of the three doubles matches to record their second straight win.
Arsel Kumderel, Yaroslav Litus and Jacob Wright each won in straight sets in singles action. Kumdereli earned his 10t h win of the season, including a 5-2 mark in the spring.
Furman 7, Army 0
WEST POINT, N.Y. ? The Furman men’s tennis team completed a four-match road swing with a 7-0 victory against Army (2-10) at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon. After winning all three doubles matches to open the day, the Paladins (8-7) won all the singles matches in straight sets.
Senior Bo Ladyman had another strong day, winning his third straight singles match with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Phil Muhawi at number one singles. Ladyman improved to 9-5 on the season.
Ladyman also teamed with junior Jordan Walters at the top doubles position for an 8-1 victory over Chris Albornoz and Jordan Girdley. Ladyman and Walters lead Furman with nine doubles wins this season. Walters also won at number five singles, dropping only one game in the match.
Sophomore Sawyer Duncan improved to 11-2 on the season, defeating Donald Van Velzer, 6-0, 6-3, at number four. Senior Daniel Knause won his third consecutive match, topping Jordan Girdley, 6-2, 6-1, at number two. Rookie Philipp Fuelkell and sophomore Andrei Chvetsov paired for an 8-5 win at number two doubles and each won his respective singles match.
The Paladins will head south to challenge South Carolina State in Charleston, S.C. on Wednesday, March 11 at 2 p.m.
Wofford 7, Lipscomb 0
Wofford 6, Gardner-Webb 1
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford men's tennis team turned in a sold result on Sunday as they dropped just one match in sweeping Lipscomb 7-0, and Gardner-Webb 6-1, on Sunday in a double header played at the Reeves Tennis Center. Wofford is now 6-7 on the year while Lipscomb falls to 4-5 and Gardner-Webb stands at 3-12.
Wofford started the day off right downing Lipscomb Sunday morning. In doubles, the Terriers took all three doubles matches to take the doubles point and a 1-0 lead heading into singles play. The Terriers won comfortably at No. 2 and 3, while Stuart Robertson and Danny Manlow needed just one service break to win 8-6.
Wofford continued right where it left off in singles taking all six matches in straight sets. Alan Donald was the lone Terrier to be pushed as he won each set with only one break of serve taking the match 6-4, 6-4. Stuart Robertson and Paul Bartholomy each won with identical scores of 6-1, 6-3 on courts one and five.
"I am proud of the way we concentrated and executed against Lipscomb," noted head coach Rod Ray.
In the second match of the day, the Terriers got a stern test from Gardner-Webb but were able to win by a comfortable margin. Wofford came out one again setting the tone early in doubles play taking all three matches. Donald and Bartholomy rolled 8-1 at No. 2, while Scott Collins and Tinus Van Wyk held on at No. 3 winning 9-7. Manlow and Robertson also won 8-6, helping give the Terriers the doubles point and a 1-0 lead.
The Runnin' Bulldogs did not go away however in singles play. Although Gardner-Webb won on court No. 1, the Terriers were able to take the next five en route to the win. Collins was pushed to three sets on court No. 2 but prevailed by a score of 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Manlow also had a strong win on court No. 3 winning 6-3, 7-6. The remaining three Terriers were able to win with relative ease in straight sets.
"This was a tough hard tested match," stated Ray. "Gardner -Webb is a good team and they came in prepared to win. We stepped up and competed hard in what was a very physical day for us. I am extremely proud of our doubles play and the toughness we showed down the stretch."
Wofford will return to the court on Saturday as they open Southern Conference play at Elon at 1 p.m.
The Citadel 5, James Madison 2
The Citadel 7, Case Western Reserve 0
Charleston, S.C. ? The Bulldog tennis team defeated James Madison, 5-2 and Case Western Reserve, 7-0, on Monday, March 9 at the Earle Tennis Center on The Citadel’s campus. This is the first time in the 2009 season that The Citadel has shutout its opponent.
The Bulldogs began the morning by earning the doubles point against James Madison. Derek Dickey and Alberto Diaz paired up to dominate the Dukes’ Matt King and Ville Maaranen, 8-2, and Yufo Sutantio and Michael Kociecki won, 8-6, defeating James Madison’s Mike Smith and Tommi Nissinen. Martin King and Joshua Cook suffered an 8-2 loss against the Dukes’ Jared Robinson and Brian Rubenstein.
In singles, Kociecki defeated Smith, 6-2, 6-2, and Diaz earned a Bulldog point against James Madison’s Nissinen, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. King rallied for a 6-2, 6-7, 6-1 win against the Dukes’ Rubenstein and Dickey owned the match against James Madison’s Maaranen, 6-2, 6-3.
Sutantio suffered a tough loss to the Dukes’ Robinson, 7-6, 6-4. This is the first time that Sutantio has lost in doubles since Jan. 24. Frederic Petrilli was defeated, 6-2, 6-1, by James Madison’s Yaroslav Voznenko.
In the match against Case Western Reserve, the Bulldogs were on fire as they tallied the doubles point. Sutantio and Kociecki won, 8-2, against the Spartans’ Adam Erickson and Paul Smetona and Diaz and Dickey swung for an 8-2 win against Case Western’s Rohan Patel and John Smetona. King and Petrilli lost in doubles three.
The Citadel continued to control the courts as Kociecki defeated the Spartans’ John, 6-3, 6-1 and Sutantio defeated Case Western’s Allen Ye, 6-2, 6-2. In singles three, Diaz won, 6-2, 6-2 against the Spartans’ Patel and King defeated Kenneth Nguyen, 6-3, 6-1. Dickey downed Case Western’s Sean Carr, 6-2, 6-1 and after two hours, Larkin pulled out a win against Erickson, 7-6, 4-6, 10-6.
The Bulldogs will begin Southern Conference action on Wednesday, March 11 at 2 p.m. as they host Chattanooga.
Appalachian State 6, Kennesaw State 1
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Appalachian State University men’s tennis continued with its winning ways Tuesday, as the Black and Gold grabbed an impressive 6-1 win over Kennesaw State. With the victory ASU improves to 7-3 on the season, while the Owls drop to 3-6.
Appalachian was able to get off to a solid start, notching wins in all three doubles matches.
The duo of Bobby Lake and Lee Floyd were victorious over Michael Langel and Tyler Mills, earning a decisive 8-2 win, while Trent Constance and Peter Jacobs defeated Andrew Suesserman and Simon Janik 8-6 at the number two spot. Capping off doubles action, the team of Phillip Kloc and Britton Webb kept ASU perfect in doubles, winning 8-4.
In singles play, Lake defeated his opponent at the number one spot, winning in three sets, while Constance easily moved past Mills in number two singles play winning 6-2, 6-2 and Jacobs downed Janik 7-6, 6-4 at the number three position.
Floyd and Kloc both picked up wins over their competition at the number four and five spots, while Alain Humblet dropped a tough match at the number six position, losing 6-4, 6-2.
ASU plays its second match of the day, taking on Bethune Cookman at 4 p.m.
Appalachian State 7, Bethune-Cookman 0
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Appalachian State University men's tennis won its eighth match of the 2009 season Tuesday afternoon as the Apps downed Bethune Cookman 7-0 to cap off the Black and Gold's spring break trip to Florida. With the win ASU improves to 8-3 overall.
The Mountaineers dominated doubles play winning all three matches and earning the early point.
The duo of Bobby Lake and Lee Floyd defeated Christian Cruz and Jeffrey Smallwood 8-3 while Trent Constance and Peter Jacobs cruised past their opponents also winning 8-4 at the number two spot. Freshman Jordan Moser saw his first match action of 2009, as he and teammate Britton Webb handily beat Kristofer Martin and Stefan James 8-4 at the number three position.
ASU continued with their impressive play, remaining spotless in singles action.
Lake was victorious at the number one spot, winning 6-2, 6-1 and Constance downed Yannick Jackson in two sets as well at the number two position. Jacobs and Floyd kept up the Apps dominance, as each notched wins at the three and four spots, while Phillip Kloc and Alain Humblet both won as well in two sets at the five and six positions.
The Apps look to carry their momentum into a huge SoCon matchup with The Citadel, Thursday March 12 at 4 p.m. in Charleston, S.C.
UNC Greensboro 5, Samford 2
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ? UNC Greensboro moved to 2-0 in Southern Conference men’s tennis action on the year and 6-2 overall with a 5-2 win Tuedsay afternoon at Samford.
The Spartans swept all three doubles matches for an early 1-0 lead. UNCG then got straight-set wins by Orcun Seyrek and Arsel Kumdereli to go along with three-set victories by Andrey Bubnov and Yaroslav Litus to win their third straight match.
In the win, Seyrek won his 12th match of the season, while Kumdereli earned 11th win of the year. Seyrek is now 7-1 on the spring season.
UNCG continues its southern swing with a match at Jacksonville on Wednesday afternoon.
