Wake Forest 7, College of Charleston 0
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The 21st-ranked Wake Forest women's tennis team blanked 65th-ranked College of Charleston, 7-0, at the Tennis Center at Patriots Point on Tuesday.
The Cougars play North Carolina State at 2 p.m. on Wednesday.
With the win, the Demon Deacons improved to 9-4, while the Cougars fell to 8-2. Charleston had its 8-match winning streak snapped.
After sweeping the doubles point, the Demon Deacons secured the win when Emilee Malvehy knocked off Caroline Newman, 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3. Wake Forest got a 6-2, 6-2 win by Sasha Kulikova over Charleston's Holly Dowse at No. 1 singles.
Charleston's Anna Lee Evans dropped a hard-fought 7-6, 6-3 decision at No. 5 singles.
College of Charleston 7, Chattanooga 0
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. -- Holly Dowse's straight set win at No. 1 singles helped 65th-ranked College of Charleston to a 7-0 Southern Conference win over Chattanooga in Southern Conference women's tennis action at the College of Charleston Tennis Center at Patriots Point on Monday.
Charleston, which plays host to Wake Forest at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, improved to 8-1 overall and 1-0 in league play. Charleston is riding an 8-match winning streak. UTC fell to 2-8 and 0-1.
Dowse earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles over Shaina Singh that stretched Charleston's lead to 2-0. Caroline Newman beat Charlotte Bossy 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3, Kinsey Casey beat Emily Hangstefer 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 and Anna Lee Evans garnered a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Annie Green at No. 5.
Nina Burgoon had a 6-3, 7-6 win over Brianna Wishing at No. 6 singles, while Laura Borza earned a three set win at No. 2 singles.
The Cougars won the doubles point when Dowse and Casey won 8-2 at No. 1, Borza and Evans grabbed an 8-0 win at No. 2 and Newman and Schwarz won 8-7 at No. 3.
Lipscomb 5, Wofford 2
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford women's tennis team was unable to come away with a win on Sunday morning as they fell to Lipscomb 5-2 at the Reeves Tennis Center. Lipscomb improves to 5-4 while the Terriers fall to 0-6.
The doubles pair of freshman Ashley Lawrence and Cayley Wetzig won easily on Court No. 1 8-2, but it was not enough to take the doubles point as Lipscomb won on courts No. 2 and 3 by scores of 8-6 and 9-7 to take a 1-0 lead. This was the first doubles win of the year for Lawrence and the first for Wetzig and Lawrence as a doubles pairing.
Lipscomb was able to secure three wins in singles to secure the match but it wasn't easy. Lawrence was able to win convincingly at No. 3 by a 6-1, 6-2 score. Haley Baird was also able to come out with a singles victory as she downed Danielle Hansen 6-1, 6-4 on court No. 4. Wetzig was ever so close in pulling out another win for the Terriers but was unable to prevail in three sets as she was downed 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
College of Charleston 4, Liberty 3
College of Charleston 6, Butler 1
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. -- The College of Charlston women's tennis team swept of pair of matches on Sunday at the College of Charleston Tennis Center at Patriots Point. The Cougars downed Liberty 4-3 in the opener, and knocked off Butler, 6-1, in the nightcap.
With the sweep, the 65th-ranked Cougars improved to 7-1 on the season. The Cougars, who have won seven straight matches, play host to Southern Conference foe Chattanooga at 2 p.m. on Monday.
In the first match, Caroline Newman's win at No. 3 singles lifted the College of Charleston women's tennis team to a hard-fought win over Liberty.
Newman's earned a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Nadia Solomon to secure the Cougars' victory.
After the Cougars swept the doubles point for a 1-0 lead, Nina Burgoon's 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles and Laura Borza's 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2 gave Charleston a 3-0 lead.
In the nightcap, Charleston got singles wins from Holly Dowse at No. 1, Laura Borza at No. 2, Newman at No. 3, Kinsey Casey at No. 5 and Nina Burgoon at No. 6 en route to the win over Butler.
Dowse beat Natali Jaimes 6-2, 6-2 and Dowse completed her exciting day with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Becky Jenkins. Charleston swept the doubles point.
Flagler College 6, Appalachian State 1
ST. AUGUSTINE, FLA.- Appalachian State University women's tennis could not withstand a tough Flagler squad Monday afternoon as the Black and Gold fell to the Saints 6-1. With the loss the Apps drop to 2-7 on the season, while Flagler improves to 3-4.
ASU was able to notch one win in doubles play at the number two spot, with the duo of Lindsay King and Blakeley Bean defeating their opponents 9-8 in an 8-5 tiebreaker. At the number one doubles position Gisela Fernandez and Olivia Stannard dropped 8-2, while the team of Laura Janke and Amanda Cash put up a solid effort but were unable to eek out a win falling 9-8 in an 8-5 tiebreaker.
Junior Caroline Mauch was the lone Mountaineer to grab a win at the number six spot, defeating Roxane Alt in three sets, winning 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
At the number one singles spot, Cash dropped two close sets to her opponent falling 6-4, 6-4 while Bean also lost in two sets.
Heather Prior took Veronica Figueroa to three sets, but could not earn the win at the number two spot, while teammates Fernandez and Stannard were also defeated at the four and five positions.
ASU has a quick turn around as they take on South Dakota, Wednesday March 11 at 11:30 a.m. in Orlando, Fla.
Marquette 5, Samford 2
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford women’s tennis team fought hard against one of the top teams in the Great Lakes Region on Monday, but in the end fell short versus the Marquette Golden Eagles 5-2 in a non-conference matchup held at the Samford Tennis Center.
Samford (2-5) was again forced to play without the services of two of its top four players Monday. Both Lindsey Mallory and Rebecca Kirven are currently rehabilitating from leg injuries and were dressed in street clothes.
Despite being shorthanded, the Bulldogs still earned victories in the top two singles matches against the Golden Eagles. Sophomore Taylor Morgan outlasted Marquette’s Paola Calderon, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (8), on court No. 1, while Samford’s Andrie Meiring also picked up a three-set win over Olga Fischer in the No. 2 singles duel, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (9).
Marquette (12-5) took the doubles point and secured the dual-match victory with singles wins on courts No. 3-6.
With the non-conference triumph, the Golden Eagles extended their winning streak to two matches. Marquette has been victorious in four of its previous five contests and recently knocked off Connecticut 7-0 on March 1.
In doubles play, Samford was forced to default on court No. 3, but the Bulldogs’ combination of Jessica Diamond and Meiring held off the Golden Eagles’ duo comprised of Kylie Moore and Rachel Hush, 8-7 (4), on court No. 2.
Marquette’s Calderon and Robin Metzler clinched the doubles point on court No. 1 with an 8-4 win against Samford’s Stephanie Parkison and Morgan.
The Samford women’s tennis team will next be in action Saturday as the Bulldogs square off against both Southern Miss and UNO at the 2009 USM Invitational to be held in Hattiesburg, Miss. Samford is slated to play Southern Miss at 10 a.m., and UNO at 2 p.m.
USC Upstate 6, Wofford 1
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford women’s tennis team was downed by cross town foe USC Upstate on Saturday afternoon 6-1 on the campus of USC Upstate. The Spartans improve to 7-2 with the win while the Terriers fall to 0-5 on the year.
The Spartans jumped out to a 1-0 lead after doubles play sweeping all three matches. The closest the Terriers came to taking a doubles match was on court number one where senior Cayley Wetzig and freshman Ashley Lawrence were defeated by Anna Nova and Emilia Milovanovic 8-3.
Lawrence, playing in just her second singles match of the spring season, picked up her first win of the season over Milovanovic in straight sets 6-1, 7-5 on court number three. In others singles action, Sabrina Smyers pushed Carolina Bello to three sets before falling 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. The remaining four Terriers were defeated in straight sets.
