Wofford 12, Gardner-Webb 10

SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Wofford College baseball team scored eight runs in the sixth inning to come back and defeat Gardner-Webb 12-10 on Tuesday evening at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers were down 8-4 before the eight runs scored in the sixth gave Wofford the lead for the first time in the game at 12-8.

Wofford is now 5-6 on the season and 1-2 in the Southern Conference, while Gardner-Webb is 6-5 overall and 3-0 in the Big South. The Terriers were led by Josh McKinney with three hits, while Michael Gilmartin, Kyle Behrendt and Mac Doyle each had two RBIs. Gardner-Webb got the game started with three runs in the top of the first. Wofford was able to get one run back in the bottom of the second when doubles from Jake Williams and Mac Doyle drove in one run.

In the top of the third, the Runnin’ Bulldogs led off with a double and ended up scoring two runs to take a 5-1 lead. Wofford responded with two runs in the bottom half of the third as Alex Lee and Josh McKinney both scored.

With a 5-3 lead, Gardner-Webb led off the fourth inning with a double and scored three runs on three hits in their half of the frame. A double from Neil Robinette scored Kyle Behrendt, who had reached on an error, to make it an 8-4 game.

After a scoreless fifth, Wofford came to the plate in the bottom of the sixth. Fourteen Terriers batted in the inning, with eight runs scored on seven hits. Kyle Behrendt had two hits in the inning, while three players were walked on the way to a 12-8 lead.

Gardner-Webb got one run back in the eight inning before Bobby Streisel got a strikeout with the bases loaded to end the inning. In the ninth, Brock Miller hit a solo home run to make it a 12-10 game before the final two outs gave the Terriers the win.

For Wofford, starter Reid McElveen threw the first inning and allowed three runs (two earned) and two hits with two strikeouts. Anthony Rowland went 3.0 innings and allowed five hits, five runs (two earned) along with two strikeouts. J.D. Osborne (1-0) threw two innings with one hit and no runs allowed in his first career win. Drew Sheridan went 1.2 innings with three hits and one run along with a strikeout. It was the first meeting of Wofford and Gardner-Webb since 1995 and the first with both schools as members of NCAA Division I. Konstantine Diamaduros saw a ten-game hitting streak to begin the season come to an end, however he did have an RBI. Wofford has won back-to-back games for the first time this season. Michael Gilmartin now has 14 career saves, second most in school history.

The five errors on the night were the most in a game this season. The Terriers were averaging one error a game before tonight. Wofford and Gardner-Webb each had twelve hits in the game. The Runnin’ Bulldogs stranded eleven runners, while Wofford left only five on base.

Wofford will then travel to South Carolina for a game Wednesday night at 7:00 pm at Carolina Stadium. Wofford will host Fordham for a four-game series beginning on Friday night.

Davidson 14, Yale 8

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Freshman Drew Gadaire hit two of the Wildcats' four home runs, and Davidson exploded for seven runs in the fifth to secure the comeback 14-8 victory over the Yale Bulldogs Tuesday night at Wilson Field.

Senior designated hitter Pat Brady's (1-for-4, 4 RBI) grand slam and Gadaire's (3-for-5, 3 RBI) first home run highlighted a seven-run fifth that put the 'Cats from trailing 5-2 to on top 9-5.

Senior second baseman Zach Kayne (2-for-5, 3 RBI) also homered for the Wildcats, who improve to 7-5 overall with the win. Yale drops to 1-3 on the season.

The seven-run fifth turned sophomore Ian Horkley, pitching in relief of starter Andy Bass, into a winner. Horkley (2-0) allowed three runs on five hits in three innings of work.

For the Bulldogs, starter Joe Castaldi (0-1) took the loss, allowing seven runs (six earned) on six hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Yale took a quick 4-0 lead to start, getting a pair of runs in both the first and the second. Chris Sweeney started the scoring with a two-run home run in the first, and Davis Stanley drove in a pair on a two-RBI single up the middle.

Davidson got a pair back in the third, as senior center fielder Brett Shore (2-for-4, 2 RBI) singled up the middle to send in senior third baseman Chris FitzPatrick (single) and Kayne (error).

Stanley drove in another run for the Bulldogs in the fourth to push Yale's lead to 5-2, but Davidson took charge of the game in the fifth, chasing Castaldi and punishing the Bulldog relief to the tune of seven runs on four hits and batting around in the frame.

Chris FitzPatrick was hit by a pitch to start the inning and, after stealing second, scored on Kayne's double down the left field line. Senior short stop Matt Webb (1-for-4) was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second and both took a pair of bases on a double from sophomore first baseman Danny Weiss (2-for-5, 2 RBI).

Senior right fielder Chase FitzPatrick became the third hit batsmen of the inning to juice the bases and run Castaldi in favor of Pat Ludwig, who surrendered the grand slam to Brady. Gadaire made it back-to-back jacks to push the 'Cats' lead to 9-5.

Weiss's second hit of the night plated Shore (walk) for another run in the sixth, but Yale would mount an attack, adding three runs on four hits, 10-8.

The Wildcats offense, though, got four runs in the bottom of the inning, including a pair of Gadaire's second home run, and sophomore Mac Hunter, sophomore Matt Silwiak and freshman Brian Russell combined to allow just one hit over the last 2 1/3 innings.

Davidson and Yale will play the final game of the series tomorrow at 4 p.m. at Wilson Field.

Elon 16, LaSalle 9

ELON, N.C. ? Justin Hilt has made the most of his first 11 games as a member of the Elon Phoenix, having recorded at least one hit in each game.  On Tuesday, Hilt went 2-for-5 with two homers, two runs scored and four RBI to lead the Phoenix to a 16-9 baseball victory over the La Salle Explorers from Latham Park.  Elon is now 7-4 on the year while La Salle now sits at 4-5.

In the second, Dallas Tarleton drew a walk and then trotted home when Hilt belted a shot into the trees beyond the left field wall for his third home run of the season.

Cory Harrilchak extended his streak of reaching base safely to 44 games when he led off the Elon third with a solo shot to right. It was his third homer of the year. Zeth Stone followed and reached on an error by the Explorer second baseman. Stone raced to third on a one-out Mike Melillo single through the right side of the infield. Chase Austin’s double off the wall in center drove home Stone to push the Phoenix cushion to 4-0.

The Phoenix kept up the attack in the fourth when Scott Riddle lined a single to left which plated Mike Lobacz who had led the inning off with a double.

Jeff Flax ended the shutout attempt in the fifth with a lead-off homer to left on an 0-1 pitch. It was his first homer of the season. Zack Feierstein walked and moved to third on a double down the left field line off the bat of Brian Meagher. Dennis Burge pulled the Explorers within a run with a three-run shot to left.

Elon got two back in the bottom of the fifth when Tarleton lined a ball over the wall in right for a two-run shot that also brought home Austin who had doubled to begin the frame.

Three straight singles from Marc Schoch, Jon Gyles and Flax scored another Explorer run and put runners at the corners with no outs in the sixth. Feierstein grounded a ball to third and reached first on a fielder’s choice which scored Gyles. Flax was safe at second on an Elon throwing error. After a sac bunt from Brian Meagher advanced both runners, Burge walked to load the bases. Justin Handler lined a ball to left for a sac fly that tied the game as Flax came home.

The Phoenix moved back on top in the seventh when Hilt blasted his second long ball of the day, this one a two-run shot to dead center that also brought home Tarleton. Pat Irvine and Lobacz then ripped back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners. Harrilchak’s bloop single to center allowed Irvine to job home, pushing Elon’s lead back to three runs at 10-7. With two outs, Bennett Davis laced a double off the bottom of the wall in left, scoring Lobacz. Melillo blew the game open with a three-run shot over the 385 sign in center for his second home run of the year.

La Salle got one in the eighth on a Handler double and another in the ninth on TJ Chism's home run.

Elon's scoring was completed in the eighth as Harry Austin stole home as part of a double steal and Lobacz doubled home another.

Jimmy Reyes (2-0) threw 1.1 shutout innings out of the pen to earn the win.  He allowed just one hit and struck out one.

Cody Weiss (1-2) took the loss in relief for the Explorers.  He surrendered seven earned runs on seven hits in 1.2 innings.

Elon banged out a season-best 21 hits, including 10 extra base hits.  The 21 hits were the most since recording 21 in a win over Georgia Southern in the SoCon Tournament a year ago.  The five Phoenix homers marked the first time the team had done that since May 13, 2008 in a win over Wake Forest.

Along with Hilt's performance, Elon was led by a 2-for-5, three-RBI day from Melillo as well as a 3-for-6, two-run, two-RBI performance from Harrilchak.  Every Phoenix starter recorded at least one hit and eight different players had multi-hit performances.

Burge drove in three and scored one while going 1-for-4 for La Salle.  Both Handler and Flax drove in two and went 2-for-4.

Elon hits the road for a 6 p.m. game at Wake Forest on Wednesday night.

Western Carolina 11, East Tennessee State 5

Cullowhee, N.C. - Freshman right-hander Kyle Stewart worked five and a third of one-hit baseball to win his first collegiate start while classmate Ross Heffley posted a 3-for-4 showing at the plate with a double and two RBI as Western Carolina surged past East Tennessee State, 11-5, in nonconference action Tuesday afternoon at Childress Field / Hennon Stadium.

Stewart, a native of Onalaska, Wisc., pitched around five walks with a career-best seven strikeouts, surrendering two unearned runs in the win. Sophomore Brandon Johnson tallied his first career save working the final two and a third and shutting down a Buccaneers' rally in the seventh inning.

The same two team's wrap-up the two-game set on Wednesday with first pitch at 4:00 pm.

Seven Catamounts posted multi-hit games as WCU pounded out 17 base hits and 11 runs. It was the fourth double-digit scoring tally for Western this season and the seventh double-figure hit performance. Western improved to 9-2 on the season and remained perfect at home, 7-0, at Childress Field/Hennon Stadium.

Western Carolina opened the scoring with a three-spot in the home half of the third inning on a two RBI double down the left field line for junior Brent Greer, who finished 2-for-5 with a double and three runs driven in. Junior Tyler Kirkpatrick capped the scoring with a hard ground out to plate Heffley, who was intentionally walked earlier in the frame.

The Catamounts stretched the advantage to five with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Heffley opened the inning with a double down the left field line, and two batters later scored from third on an RBI single by senior J.C. Lyons. He later trotted home on an RBI single by Kirkpatrick to give WCU a 5-0 advantage.

Lyons finished 2-for-4, including his team-best third triple of the season, with a pair of runs scored and two driven in.

East Tennessee State (5-5) responded with three in the visitor's half of the sixth inning. Stewart put himself in a pinch with an error on a run down between second and third that resulted in Buc runners on both bases with just one out. An error at first broke up the shutout, with a bases loaded walk by reliever Tyler Brownlow allowing the third run to score. Matt Benedict came on to end the sixth, but he would not survive the seventh after allowing two earned runs on four hits and gave way to Johnson.

The Buccaneers closed back to within two runs in the seventh, 7-5, but behind Johnson's strong pitching performance shut down the Bucs offense. The Catamounts added a four-run home eighth and were able to hold on for their fourth-straight win.

Heffley and junior Nick Liles, who finished 2-for-5 with a double each stretched their current hitting streaks to 11 and 13 games, respectively. Senior Andy John tallied his first two hits of the season in a 2-for-3 outing, while Matt Johns finished 2-for-2 after taking over at first the final three innings.

For East Tennessee State, starter Dustin Plumlee (2-1) suffered his first defeat of the season after allowing five earned runs on eight base hits through five innings, walking three and striking out two. Troy Mendez posted the lone multi-hit game for the Bucs, who only managed two infield singles through the first seven and a third against WCU pitching. The left fielder finished 2-for-5 with a pair of singles and an RBI.

All told, the Bucs stranded the bases loaded twice as a part of leaving 12 on base.

Jacksonville State 10, Samford 1

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.?The Jacksonville State baseball team grabbed a four-run lead in the first two innings and Samford couldn’t catch up as the Gamecocks defeated the Bulldogs, 10-1, Tuesday night at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

“When you don’t throw strikes, there’s not a whole lot you can do,” Samford head coach Casey Dunn said. “We didn’t pitch well. I thought, offensively, we were okay, but when you dig yourself the kind of whole we did, it becomes tough.”

Wayne Miller led Samford at the plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Mason Meredeth, Brad Moss and Gary Cramer had one hit each for the Bulldogs. Samford used five pitchers in the game, and Grant Sides pitched the first 3.0 innings, giving up four runs on five hits to take the loss.

For JSU, Ben Tootle pitched 5.0 innings, giving up one run on three hits to earn the win. Chase Smith tossed the final 4.0 innings to pick up the save. Blake Seguin, Steven Leach, Jake Welch and Heath Wall had two hits each for the Gamecocks.

JSU plated two runs in the first inning and two more in the second to take an early 4-0 lead.

Samford scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of the third inning. After Michael Johnson walked with one out, Miller doubled to left field to drive in Johnson to make the score 4-1.

The Gamecocks then scored two runs in the fourth inning and four more in the fifth to take a 10-1 lead.

Samford drops to 5-7 with the loss. Jacksonville State improves to 6-5 on the season.

Samford will return to action Wednesday night when the Bulldogs play at Alabama. The game is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start from Sewell-Thomas Stadium. The game can be heard locally on WVSU-FM 91.1, or worldwide on the internet at www.samford.edu/wvsu.

Jacksonville 8, Georgia Southern 7

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Georgia Southern committed two errors early, leading to five unearned runs, and fell short in its comeback losing 8-7 at Jacksonville Tuesday night (March 10). The Eagles dropped to 11-1 overall.

Georgia Southern got on the board in the first inning. Phillip Porter (Marietta/Sprayberry) lined a one-out double and scored thanks to Ty Wright's (Montrose/ABAC) two-out single through the left side.

JU (7-5) loaded the bases in the second inning off two singles and a walk. With two outs, Esterlin Perozo lifted a fly ball to Porter in right. He could not make the play as all four runs would score, putting the Dolphins ahead by three. JU would add another unearned run in the third when Thomas Myers reached on an error to start the frame and scored on a groundout.

Griffin Benedict (Dunwoody/St. Pius) singled in the fourth, extending his streak to 8-for-8 with two walks in his last 10 plate appearances. He eventually scored on Eric Phillips' (Carrollton/Carrollton) groundout.

Kevin Bowles (Statesboro/Statesboro) was hit by a pitch to start the fifth. Relief pitcher Joey Wedner tried to pick Bowles off first base but his throw sailed into right field putting him on third base. Bowles scored on a wild pitch, making it 5-3 Jacksonville.

The Dolphins plated three more runs in the fifth and sixth innings, taking an 8-3 lead. The Eagles loaded the bases in the seventh thanks to two hit batters and a wild pitch. Benedict brought home a run when he was hit by a pitch, chasing relief pitcher Baker Chapman. Wright greeted Matt Loosen with a RBI single but two strikeouts ended the Eagles' threat.

GS scored two more in the eighth, taking advantage of a RBI double from Porter and two errors by second baseman Jamaal Hawkins - the last off the bat of Benedict which brought home Porter.

Jacksonville threatened in the eighth to add insurance runs, loading the bases with one out. Dexter Bobo (Cumming/Darton College) got a strikeout and flyball to end the threat.

Wright went 3-for-5 with two RBI. Porter had two doubles and two runs scored while Bowles reached base and scored three times.

Colin Snow (Alpharetta/Alpharetta) gave up five unearned runs on five hits in four innings. He walked one and struck out a season-high five batters.

Chuck Opachich went 4-for-5 including a RBI triple. Hawkins had two hits and two runs scored. Matt Tomshaw improved to 1-1, allowing two runs on four hits in four innings. He walked one and struck out four.

The Eagles return to J.I. Clements Stadium on Wednesday night (March 11), playing host to Bethune-Cookman. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.

No. 2 North Carolina 9, Appalachian State 8

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Just seven outs away from its first win over a nationally ranked opponent in 27 years, Appalachian State University baseball saw No. 2 North Carolina score five runs in the final two innings and fell, 9-8, on Tuesday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium.

Appalachian (5-7) led 7-4 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but North Carolina (11-2) got an infield single, hit batter and back-to-back home runs by freshman Levi Michael and all-American Dustin Ackley to grab an 8-7 advantage. Bat luck played a part in the four-run UNC seventh, as ASU pitcher Taylor Miller (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) struck out the first two batters he faced in the inning, but was hit on his non-throwing arm by a comebacker on the infield single. He was not injured on the play, but didn't retire another batter before leaving the game after allowing a double to clean-up hitter Kyle Seager following the back-to-back homers.

The Mountaineers came back to even the score at 8-8 in the top of the eighth when Wes Hobson (Winston-Salem, N.C./North Forsyth) scored from second base on an errant pickoff throw to first by pitcher Colin Bates. However, the Tar Heels plated in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single by Tarron Robinson in the bottom of the eighth. Bates retired the side in order in the ninth to seal the win for the Heels.

Despite the final result, ASU turned in one of its best efforts of the young season in defeat. Seemingly reversing a trend that had seen them outscored 17-10 in the first inning of ballgames this year, Appalachian banged out four hits and scored three times in the top of the first to grab an early 3-0 lead. The first-inning blues returned in the bottom of the stanza, however, as UNC tallied scored three runs of their own to knot the contest at 3-3.

The teams swapped runs in the bottom of the second and top of the third to make it 4-4 before the Apps scored twice in the fourth and once more in the seventh to take the 7-4 advantage.

Catcher Jerod Faggart (Concord, N.C./Northwest Cabarrus) led the Mountaineers offensively with a 2-for-4 effort that included a two-run single in the first and a solo home run in the third. Isaac Harrow (Hickory, N.C./Hickory), David Towarnicky (New Bern, N.C./New Bern) and Chris Alessandria (Ponte Vedra, Fla./Nease) also drove in runs for the Black and Gold.

Leadoff hitter Ben Bunting collected three of UNC's 11 hits and scored three runs. Michael drove in three runs, all on his seventh-inning blast.

Chris Patterson was saddled with the loss to fall to 1-1 on the season while Bates upped his record to 2-1 despite blowing the save in the eighth.

Appalachian fell just shy of its first win over a top-25 opponent since it defeated No. 23 The Citadel, 5-4, in 1982 and its first-ever triumph over a top-10 team. The highest-ranked opponent that ASU has ever toppled was No. 14 Wake Forest in 1977.

The Mountaineers get another crack at the second-ranked Tar Heels on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Boshamer Stadium.

Elon 10, LaSalle 8

ELON, N.C. ? Mike Melillo went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBI to pace the Elon Phoenix to a 10-8 victory over the visiting La Salle Explorers in front on 456 fans at Latham Park in non-league baseball action Monday evening.  The Phoenix, which had fallen behind 7-0 after the first half inning of play, now sits at 6-4 overall this year.  La Salle is now 4-4.

In the top of the first, Jeff Flax drew a walk to lead off the game. He headed to third when John Malloy doubled off the wall in right-center. After TJ Chism was hit by a pitch to load the bases Marc Schoch grounded a ball up the middle that was gloved by a diving Chase Austin, but no play could be made and Flax scored on the single. Jon Gyles followed with a line drive single to center to score both Malloy and Chism, building a 3-0 lead for the Explorers. With two down, Brian Meagher walked ahead of Zach Feierstein who singled through the left side to drive home Schoch. Flax singled to drive home Gyles before Justin Handler singled to drive in another two runs and La Salle finished the first half inning with a 7-0 lead.

Elon answered with a lead-off walk to Cory Harrilchak and a perfectly executed hit-and-run single off the bat of Zeth Stone to put runners on the corners. Austin followed with a walk to load the bases. Bennett Davis then walked on four straight pitches to force home Harrilchak. A Melillo double down the right field line plated two more as Stone and Austin scored. Dallas Tarleton drew the fourth walk of the inning, reloading the bases. Justin Hilt’s infield single scored another two runs as the Phoenix closed the gap to 7-5 with no outs in the bottom of the first. After a wild pitch moved Tarleton to third and Hilt to second, Harrilchak walked for the second time in the inning. Stone lined a single to right to drive home another two runs, knotting the score at 7-7.

Davis began the Elon second with a double to left-center and rode home on Melillo’s bomb to left, his first homer of the season.

The Phoenix added another on a solo homer from Davis in the sixth, his third on the year.

With runners on second and third, Handler hit a ball to third that took a bad hop over Davis and went down the left field line for a double which scored Chris Umstead who had earlier walked.

Picking up the win was Bobby Kennedy who improved to 1-2 on the season.  Kennedy allowed seven runs on nine hits in 5.0 innings of action.  The Phoenix bullpen allowed just one run in the final 4.0 innings.

Eric Van Wyk (0-1) took the loss in relief.  He was charged with two runs on four hits in 2.2 innings. Starter Drew Gerhart was tagged for seven runs without recording an out.

On the offensive side of the ball, Elon's Hilt went 3-for-4 with a run and two driven in while both Stone and Davis collected two hits.  Harrilchak has now reached base safely in 43 straight games.  Of Elon's 12 hits, six were of the extra base variety.

Handler was 2-for-4 with three RBI while Flax, Chism and Umstead all tallied two hits.

The two squads will play again on Tuesday at 4 p.m. from Latham Park.  The scheduled pitching match-ups see Elon's Harrilchak taking on La Salle's Kevin Fuqua.

Charlotte 18, Furman 3

CHARLOTTE, N.C. --  Scoring runs in each of first five innings, the Charlotte 49ers walked over Furman, 18-3, in baseball action Monday afternoon at Hayes Stadium.

Feasting on three freshman Paladin pitchers who combined to issue 10 walks and three wild pitches while yielding 18 hits, Charlotte (8-3) made easy work of Furman (5-6) in completing the two-game regular season sweep of the Paladins.

Ryan Rivers’ three-run home run in the first inning off Paladin starting and losing pitcher Jamel Mann (0-1) staked Charlotte to an early 5-0 lead.

The 49ers tacked on four more in the second, aided by four walks, a wild pitch, and a two-run single by Zane Williams, to stretch their advantage to 9-0.

Charlotte then scored twice in the third, three more in the fourth, and finished off the outburst with a five-run fifth to take an 18-0 lead.

The run support avalanche made an easy winner of Andrew Smith (2-1), who departed after six innings after yielding no runs on five hits.  He struck out three.

Justin Wilson went 5-for-5 and scored three runs for Charlotte.  Rivers drove in four of the 49ers runs in a 2-for-4 performance at the plate.

Williams and Justin Roland, meanwhile, both had three hits and three RBI.

Reese Wade, Rob Fondu, and Chris Cowart paced Furman at the plate with two hits each.

Furman returns to action on Wednesday when it takes on Gardner-Webb in Boiling Spring, N.C., in a 3:00 p.m. game.
