SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? College of Charleston designated player Shannon Howard and Cougar pitcher Terri Mesko have been named Southern Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for all games from March 2-9, the conference office announced Tuesday. Voting is done by the league’s sports information directors.

 

With College of Charleston sweeping the awards this week it marks the third-consecutive week a school has earned both Player and Pitcher of the Week awards with Appalachian State and Chattanooga having previous winners.

 

Howard led the Cougars this past weekend with a .667 batting average, 1.111 slugging percentage and .700 on-base percentage, while recording six hits and six RBIs. The senior also clubbed a three-run home run in a 9-6 victory over Georgia Southern on Saturday. During the same game the Carmichael, Calif., native pitched 5.2 innings and struck out seven, while picking up the win.

 

Mesko appeared in all three games of the Cougars’ series against Georgia Southern, picking up a win and save on the weekend. The junior recorded a 0.46 ERA in 15.1 innings pitched. The McDonough, Ga., native allowed one earned run and 11 hits, while striking out seven batters in the Cougars 2-1 series victory over the Eagles.

 

Also nominated for this week’s Player of the Week award were Chattanooga’s Tiffany Baker, Elon’s Ashlee Crewe, UNC Greensboro’s Lyndsay Mouse, Samford’s Amanda Barrs, Appalachian State’s Sarah Rappe and Georgia Southern’s Marie Fogle.

 

Also nominated for this week’s Pitcher of the Week award were Appalachian State’s Kayla Richardson, Chattanooga’s Michelle Fuzzard, Georgia Southern’s Brianna Streetmon, Samford’s Kayla Burris, Furman’s Stephanie Mihaly and UNC Greensboro’s Cory Mattson.
