COMPLETE RESULTS
CLEMSON, S.C. ? The Appalachian State Mountaineers’ swept the men’s and women’s championships at the 2009 Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend. The title is the 16th overall for the ASU men and the 14th overall for the Mountaineer women.
Day two began with the conclusion of the men’s heptathlon. Appalachian State’s Matt Boruff won his second-consecutive men’s heptathlon title with a new SoCon record score of 5,021 points. Boruff broke his own previous record of 4,720 points in the event. The junior won two of the day’s three events to win the title despite entering the day in second place. Boruff began the day by winning the heptathlon 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.52, before taking the heptathlon pole vault with a vault of 4.64 meters (15-2? feet).
Western Carolina junior David Gift won the heptathlon 1000-meter run with a time of 2:50.29.
Catamount senior Manteo Mitchell pulled off a rare sweep for the second-straight season as he won the 60 (6.80), 200-meter dash (21.57) and 400-meter dash (49.12). Mitchell has now won the 60 and 200 twice and the 400 three times at the SoCon indoor championships.
WCU’s Felicia Paulding also won a pair of races winning both the women’s 60 (7.62) and 200 (24.82).
The Catamounts’ Jane’t Carothers claimed the 400 with a time of 56.06.
Furman’s Monique Ositelu won the women’s 800-meter run with a time of 2:15.98, while Chattanooga’s Michael Danehy grabbed the men’s 800 run title with a time of 1:55.59.
Samford’s Hillary Neal won the women’s mile run with a time of 4:59.19.
Appalachian State’s Chris Moen won the men’s mile run with a time of 4:11.08.
Samford freshman Andrea Seccafien won the women’s 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:55.94, while Chattanooga’s Chris Berry won the men’s 5,000 with a time of 14:55.12.
In the women’s 60 hurdles Samford’s Morgan Tyler won with a time of 8.71, while Western Carolina junior Christian Bethune won the men’s 60 hurdles with a time of 8.25.
Western Carolina swept the women’s and men’s 4X400-meter relay. The Lady Catamounts won in a time of 3:48.01, while the men won in a time of 3:19.60.
In the throwing events Appalachian State’s Malcolm Styers made it a clean sweep by winning the men’s weight throw with a toss of 17.24 meters (56-6? feet), a day after winning the shot put.
Not to be outdone, Mountaineers’ Whitney Smyre also followed up her shot put victory with a weight throw triumph. Her winning throw was 17.79 meters (58-4? feet).
Appalachian State’s Danielle Thorpe won the women’s triple jump with a NCAA Provisional leap of 12.68 meters (41-7? feet), while the Mountaineers’ Mark Sturgis took the men’s triple jump title with a leap of 15.25 meters (50? feet).
ASU’s Julie Ward won the women’s pole vault with a vault of 3.60 meters (11-9? feet).
The top three finishers in each event were named All-Conference.
