Elon 6, Radford 1
ELON, N.C. ? Anna Milian, Paige Kensrue, Elisa Simonetti, Melissa Wolf and Sally Wilkey all earned singles victories, propelling Elon to a 6-1 nonconference women’s tennis triumph over Radford Sunday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
The Phoenix (4-3) opened the match by sweeping the three doubles bouts, claiming the day’s first point en route to winning for the fourth time in five tilts and for the second time in as many contests. Milian and Kensrue captured the first doubles decision, dispatching Petra Dajevic and Ivana Tomaic 8-2 at No. 1.
Simonetti and Wilkey clinched the doubles point for Elon by upending Mia Drobnjak and Alexander Spector 8-4 at No. 3. Wolf and Daleen Kloppers completed the doubles sweep for the Phoenix by besting Mirna Matic and Antonietta Iosue 8-3 at No. 2.
Elon then went on to claim the first four singles decisions as Wolf (over Matic 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4), Kensrue (over Drobnjak 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2), Milian (over Dajevic 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1) and Wilkey (over Iosue 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 at No. 5) all pulled out wins.
The Highlanders (2-2) picked up a victory at No. 6 singles when Alexandra Spector rallied past Laura Graybill 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. The Phoenix won the day’s final match when Simonetti topped Tomaic 6-2, 6-7 (7-5), 6-1 at No. 3.
Florida State 7, UNC Greensboro 0
TALAHASSEE, Fla. ? Arielle VonStrolley and Alejandra Guerra earned a win at No. 1 doubles, but that would be UNC Greensboro’s only victory of the day as No. 26 Florida State topped the Spartans, 7-0, in women’s tennis action on Sunday afternoon.
VonStrolley and Guerra won by an 8-7 score over Federica Suess and Noemie Scharle at No. 1 doubles. However, the Seminoles won the other two doubles matches to claim the first point of the afternoon.
Florida State took control from there, winning all six singles matches in straight sets to raise its record to 3-2 on the spring season. UNCG dropped to 0-2 with both losses coming to Top 30-ranked teams.
UNCG returns to action on February 22 when it hosts Georgia Southern for its Southern Conference opener.
College of Charleston 4, Stetson 3
College of Charleston 5, Winthrop 2
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's tennis team took a pair of matches from Stetson (4-3) and Winthrop (5-2) on Sunday at the CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point
With the victories, the Cougars improve to 4-1 on the season.
In the Stetson match, the Cougars picked up a point after sweeping doubles play. In singles, both Charleston and Stetson won three matches each. For the Cougars, Holly Dowse and Kinsey Casey were straight set winners in the two and five spots, while Caroline Newman was a winner in three-sets (5-7, 6-3, 6-4) in the third spot.
In the Winthrop match, the Cougars took two of three matches in doubles play to earn a point and then took four of the six matches in singles play.
Keely Mulligan and Anna Lee Evans were straight set winners in the five and six spots, while Dowse and Newman had hard fought three-set victories in the first and third spots to lead the Cougars.
The College of Charleston women's tennis team returns to action on Feb. 20th when they visit Georgetown beginning at noon.
Indiana State 4, Chattanooga 3
RICHMOND, Ky. --- Despite outnumbering their opponent, the Lady Mocs fell 4-3 to Indiana State Sunday morning at the Greg Adams Tennis Facility in Richmond, Ky.
The Sycamores (1-1) claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 but with just five players on their roster, the Lady Mocs won the No. 3 doubles by default.
In singles, the Lady Mocs (2-4) started with a one-point advantage as Kate Ksiezopolski won her No. 6 match by default to tie the match at 1-1. Shaina Singh won her No. 1 singles match when her opponent Sarah Meghoufel retired with an injury in the second set and the Lady Mocs led 2-1.
Jennemieke van der Veek claimed a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 3 over Aleksandra Dzakula for UTC’s third point. However, the Sycamores would win the final three matches for the 4-3 victory.
The Lady Mocs will return home Saturday, Feb. 14 to host UT-Martin at 1:30 at the Hixson Racquet Club.
