GREENVILLE, S.C. ? The Furman men's tennis team hosted Presbyterian College and UNC Asheville in its home opener on Sunday afternoon, earning wins in both matches by a tally of 7-0. The Paladins, who won all singles matches on the day in straight sets, improve to 2-2 on the season. The loss drops Presbyterian to 1-3 while UNC Asheville falls to 1-4 overall.
Furman opened the day against the Presbyterian College Blue Hose, giving up only seven total games in the three doubles matches. Ninth-ranked senior duo of Andy Juc and Bo Ladyman earned an 8-1 victory over Matt Martin and Zach Sprouse at number one. The tandem was also posted an 8-1 win over UNC Asheville's Mauricio Correa and Jonas Brobeck later in the day.
Chris Rhyne and Andrei Chvetsov also teamed up for two doubles wins on Sunday. The pair defeated Presbyterian's Mike Nicol and Brad Luciuk, 8-4, at number three and followed that with an 8-7 (4) win over the Bulldogs Joe May and Nicolai Nonnebroich at number two.
The Paladins were equally as strong in singles action. Having played at number three singles in the previous matches this season, senior Daniel Knause moved up to the number two position and earned straight-set wins over both Nicol and Nonnebroich.
Sophomore Sawyer Duncan remained undefeated on the season with a 6-1, 6-0 win over PC's Mark Cannatelli and a 6-3, 6-4 defeat of Bulldog sophomore Nathan White. Freshman Philipp Fuelkell continued his strong play this season, earning two more wins to move to 3-1 on the season. Junior Chris Motes also earned two victories, losing only a combined total of six games in the two matches.
Furman will go back on the road to challenge #61 Clemson on Wednesday, February 11 at 2 p.m.
Appalachian State 7, Lees-McRae College 0
BOONE, N.C.- Appalachian State University men's tennis continued with its dominating performance Sunday afternoon, as the Apps defated Lees-McRae 7-0 in front of a large crowd at the Yonahlossee Raquet Club. With the win, the Mountaineers remain spotless on the season with a 2-0 record, while the Bobcats drop to 0-4 on the season.
In doubles action, at the number one spot, the team of Bobby Lake and Alain Humblet easily defeated their opponents Steve Karendal and Travis VanHoy 8-4. The duo of Trent Constance and Peter Jacobs followed suit, winning easily 8-2 at the number two position, while Phillip Kloc and Lee Floyd were also victorious on the afternoon, winning 8-4 to give ASU the doubles point.
Lake also captured a win at the number one singles spot, winning over Nandor Solymosi in two sets 6-2, 6-1.
Jacobs battled at the number two position, taking his competition into three sets after dropping the first set 3-6, but was able to rally a comeback and win the next two sets 6-2, 6-3.
Floyd and Constance both defeated their opponents at the number three and four singles positions, while Kloc also picked up a win over VanHoy 6-3, 6-2.
Capping of the action, Humblet beat Tyler Grove 6-1, 6-0 to help Appalachian cruise to the 7-0 win.
The Mountaineers look to carry their momentum into their next match, as they travel to Greenville, N.C. to take on an ever-competitive East Carolina squad, Saturday February 14 at 1:30 p.m.
Winthrop 4, College of Charleston 3
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The College of Charleston men's tennis squad dropped a 4-3 decision to Winthrop on Sunday at the CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point.
With the loss, the Cougars fall to 1-2 on the season.
In doubles, the Winthrop took two of the three matches to earn a team point. Each match was decided by a 9-8 score and also went to several tiebreakers, with the Eagles picking up the point with victories at the number one and two spots.
In singles, Winthrop swept the one through three spots to win the match. The Cougars, however, did not go down without a fight, as they picked up three points in the remaining singles matches on the day. Mickael Boyer won at number three singles in straight sets, while Mickael Trintignac and Joe Nicolazzi earned wins at the four and five spots, each in three sets.
The College of Charleston men's tennis team returns to action on Friday, Feb. 13th when they play St. Bonaventure and Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. The St. Bonaventure match begins at 10 a.m., while the Virginia Tech match begins at 3 p.m.
Georgia Southern 7, Florida A&M 0
STATESBORO, Ga. ? Georgia Southern used the momentum of gaining the early advantage from the doubles competition to storm past Florida A&M, 7-0, Sunday afternoon (Feb. 8) at the Hanner Tennis Complex. The Eagles swept the Rattlers in a three-hour battle to improve to a perfect 3-0 overall so far in 2009.
The Rattlers opened the doubles play with an 8-5 victory over Gregory Bekkers and Philip Prins at the two seed, before the Eagles took the doubles point with two solid wins from the one and three seeds, respectively. The junior tandem of Justin Flynn and Jayraj Jadeja evened the doubles point by crushing David Jackson and Paul Paige, 8-3, moments before the point was clinched by Joris De Weerdt and Matthew Sands at the one seed. The senior Eagle tandem shined as they ousted Simbarashee Happy and Michael Moore, 8-1, to give Georgia Southern the early 1-0 advantage.
Georgia Southern kept its poise through singles competition, dropping only two sets in six match wins. Jadeja and De Weerdt quickly pushed the match to 3-0 when they recorded back-to-back straight set wins from the three and one positions, respectively. Jadeja finished off Moore, 6-3, 6-2, at the three seed just prior to De Weerdt downing Happy from the one seed, 6-4, 6-1. Junior Flynn clinched the match for the Eagles from the four position when he cruised past Jackson in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
The Eagles rounded out the afternoon with a few tiebreak matches. Sands and Bekkers both captured singles wins in match tiebreaks from the five and two seeds, respectively. Sands faced off against Paige at the five seed, taking the first set 6-0, but dropped the second 6-4 to push the match into a tiebreak; Sands easily downed Paige 10-5 in the tiebreak to record the win. Bekkers was victorious at the two position against Podgainii after taking the first set, dropping the second in a tiebreak and winning the match tiebreaker 10-6. Freshman Castanhel ended the afternoon for Georgia Southern with matching 7-6(5) tiebreak sets over Cameron at the sixth seed.
Georgia Southern returns to action and wraps up this four-match homestand when they welcome Coastal Carolina on Friday, February 13. First serve at the Hanner Tennis Complex is slated for 2:30 p.m.
Alabama 7, Samford 0
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Samford men's tennis team squared off against its highest-ranked opponent of the 2009 dual-match season Sunday and was defeated 7-0 on the road versus the 19th-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide. The in-state contest was held at the UA Tennis Stadium.
With the loss, Samford (0-4) dropped its fifth-straight decision against Alabama (5-1). The Bulldogs will next be in action Saturday at 9 a.m., as they begin competition in the Auburn Spring Showdown versus Columbus State. Samford is also scheduled to meet UCF on Saturday at 2 p.m.
In Sunday's matchup against Alabama, Samford's Carl Abalos nearly picked up an upset victory over the Crimson Tide's John Lewis in singles play.
On court No. 5, the Bulldogs' sophomore from Woodstock, Ga., earned a 6-4 win in the first set, but Lewis rallied back to hold on for a 10-5 victory in the third-set super-tiebreaker. The final score of Abalos' match on court No. 5 was 4-6, 7-6 (2), 1-0 (5).
