COLUMBIA, S.C. - Playing its second straight ranked opponent, the Davidson men's tennis team came up short in a 7-0 decision at No. 51 South Carolina on Saturday afternoon at the USC Indoor Fieldhouse.
Davidson (1-4) dropped all three doubles matches to start the match against the Gamecocks (6-1), with freshman Calum Gee and Scott Myers scoring the most game wins as they fell 8-4 to Diego Cubas and Ivan Machado.
The Gamecocks then swept through the singles matches, taking all seven matches in straight sets.
Tareq Alani saw his first action of the season at the No. 6 spot, suffering a 6-2, 6-4 loss to Thomas Stoddard.
Gee and Arie Hefter gave their opponents a run, as Gee won three games each in his two sets at No. 3, while Hefter played Machado tough in a 6-3, 6-4 setback at the No. 4 singles position.
Davidson returns to action for a mid-week home match against Gardner-Webb on Tuesday, Jan. 10 at 4 p.m.

Elon 7, South Carolina State 0
ELON, N.C. ? No. 120 Oscar Podlewski and Chase Helpingstine swept their way through their singles matches, pacing Elon to a 6-1 victory over Lees-McRae and a 7-0 triumph over South Carolina State in a non-conference men’s tennis doubleheader Saturday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
Against Lees-McRae (0-2), the Phoenix (3-3) received singles wins by Podlewski at No. 1 (over Nandor Solymosi 3-6, 6-1, 6-1), Helpingstine at No. 2 (over Shaun Sumner 4-6, 6-2, 6-1), Carlin Murray at No. 3 (over Alek Mojski 6-3, 6-2), Kevin Beard at No. 4 (over Steve Karendal 7-6 (7-4), 6-1) and Clark Howell at No. 5 (over Travis VanHoy 6-3, 2-6).
The Bobcats picked up a victory at No. 6 singles when Tyler Grove outdueled Alex Crockford 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-0). Lees-McRae also won at No. 1 doubles where Karendal and VanHoy outslugged Cody Stauffer MacDowell and Alberto Rojas 8-5. Elon emerged victorious in the other doubles bouts as Howell and Damon Gooch dispatched Solymosi and Grove 8-3 at No. 2 and Beard and Philip Nemec knocked off Sumner and Marko Zivkovic 8-2 at No. 3.
Against South Carolina State (0-2), the Phoenix swept all six singles matches and all three doubles contests. Gooch (over Dmitry Lomakin 6-0, 3-0 retired at No. 1), Podlewski (over Radek Pivonka 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2), Helpingstine (over Gabriel Meana 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3), Nemec (over Tamas Dobrotka 7-5, 6-3 at No. 4), Rojas (over David Grund 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5) and Stauffer MacDowell (over Jan Langer 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6) all claimed singles success.
In doubles action, the No. 49 duo of Gooch and Nemec ousted Lomakin and Dobrotka 8-2 at No. 1, Podlewski and Helpingstine edged Pivonka and Langer 8-6 at No. 2 and Stauffer MacDowell and Rojas toppled Meana and Grund 8-2 at No. 3.
Georgia Southern 6, Bethune-Cookman 1
STATESBORO, Ga. ? Georgia Southern dropped only three sets en route to a convincing 6-1 win over Bethune-Cookman Saturday afternoon (Feb. 7) at the Hanner Tennis Complex. The men’s tennis team recorded its second straight victory of the season with the win and improved to 2-0 overall, while Bethune-Cookman fell to 0-4.
The Eagles overpowered the Wildcats at all three doubles positions to claim the early doubles point. Philip Prins and Gregory Bekkers topped Yannick Jackson and Jeff Smallwood, 8-3, right before Joris De Weerdt and Matthew Sands bypassed Emil Vassilev and Cristian Cruz, 8-4, at the one seed to clinch the early lead for the Eagles. Georgia Southern completed the doubles sweep of the Wildcats with an 8-6 decision by Justin Flynn/Jayraj Jadeja over Stefan James/Kristofer Martin.
Momentum rolled smoothly over to singles action as Georgia Southern quickly secured the match with five singles victories. Bekkers walked off the court first, dispatching Vassilev in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. With a 2-0 advantage, the Wildcats notched its lone victory of the match with a win at the three seed; James held off Alain Garrido, 6-3, 6-0. Georgia Southern responded as freshman Edio Castanhel earned his second straight victory as an Eagle thanks to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Wildcat Greg Streat at the five seed.
Within minutes, junior Flynn clinched the win for Georgia Southern at the four seed with a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Crisitan Cruz. With the win already set, the Eagles added two more singles victories to the board with wins at the one and six seeds, respectively. Jadeja made the score 5-1 with a 6-1, 6-3 blowout at the one position over Jackson. Prins was the last Eagle to finish, as the senior recorded his first singles victory of the dual season in a third set match tiebreak at the six seed.
Wofford 7, Mount Olive College 0
Coastal Carolina 6, Wofford 1
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.- The Wofford men’s tennis team went 1-1 on the day Saturday as they participated in the Community Day on the Clay event hosted By Coastal Carolina in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Wofford was downed by Coastal 6-1, but rebounded to take down Mount Olive 7-0, the 33rd ranked team in Division II. With the win, the Terriers are in the win column at 1-5.
Wofford opened up the morning taking on the host school, Coastal Carolina. Alan Donald and Paul Bartholomy continued their solid play together at number two doubles picking up an 8-6 victory to get the ball rolling for the Terriers. However, the combo of Stuart Robertson and Danny Manlow fell 9-7 in a tough match on court one as did Scott Collins and Van Wyk on court three falling 8-4, giving the Chanticleers the doubles point and a 1-0 leading heading into singles play.
In singles play, the Terriers were unable to get things going as Coastal took wins on five out of six courts. The lone win of the day in single play came on court five from Van Wyk. Van Wyk was able to earn a bagel in the opening set 6-0, and followed it up in the second set 6-4, giving him a straight set win.
In the afternoon match against Mount Olive, the Terriers claimed the doubles point to start out and never looked back en route to a 7-0 victory. In doubles play, the doubles team of Robertson and Manlow had the toughest match of the three but prevailed 9-7.
Both doubles teams of Bartholomy/Donald and Collins/Van Wyk won easily 8-1 and 8-2 giving the Terriers the 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
In singles play, the Terriers continued to dominate on courts 2-6 only losing a combined 12 games. On Court number one, Collins had to battle back after losing a tough first set 6-0 and did so by taking the second set 6-0 and the third set match tiebreaker 10-5.
Wofford will return to action on February 11 as they travel to Clinton, S.C. to take on Presbyterian at 3 p.m.
