Saturday's Women's Tennis Roundup

Wake Forest 6, Furman 1

GREENVILLE, N.C. ? The Furman women's tennis team faced its fourth ranked opponent in as many matches, falling 6-1 to #33 Wake Forest on Saturday afternoon at Mickel Tennis Center. Furman falls to 0-4 on the season while the Demon Deacons improve to 6-1.

"Obviously we are starting off playing against a lot of ranked opponents," said Furman Head Coach Debbie Southern. "We are looking for improvement on the things we are working on and not focusing on the wins and losses. This kind of competition will help us in the long run. We have to stay focused on the process instead of the result."

Wake Forest swept the doubles matches to take an early 1-0 advantage in the match. After the Demon Deacons earned singles victories at number two and three, senior Laura Gioia put the Lady Paladins on the board. Ranked ninth in the country, Gioia earned her first win of 2009 season with a 6-2, 6-4 decision over #59 Sasha Kulikova. Wake Forest's Christian Tara clinched the match for the Deacons, winning a tight battle against Paladin freshman Susan Bitetti, 7-6 (6), 6-3, at number four singles.

"Laura was hungry to win and I think she was mentally tougher in this match," commented Southern. "She served well, mixed the ball up and moved really well. She forced her opponent to play a lot of balls."

Furman's schedule does not get any easier as the team heads on the road to face #56 South Florida on Friday, February 13 at 2 p.m.
