Men's Track and Field Athletes of the Week Announced

SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? UNC Greensboro track athlete Joey Thompson and Appalachian State field athlete Mark Sturgis have been named this week’s Southern Conference Men’s Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week for all meets from Jan. 29-Feb. 4, the league office announced Thursday. The athletes of the week are selected by the league’s track and field head coaches. 

 

Thompson finished fourth in the 3,000-meter race with a time of 8:31.31 last weekend at the Niswonger Invitational. Although the freshman was competing in his first-ever 3,000, the time broke a school record by more than seven seconds.

 

Sturgis won the triple jump at last week’s Niswonger Invitational with a NCAA Provisional mark of 15.52 meters. The jump ranks the senior first in the SoCon and 24th nationally. The Woodleaf, N.C., native also placed eighth in the long jump with a mark of 22’ 3 ?”.

 

Also nominated for this week’s award were Appalachian State track athlete Chris Moen, Samford field athlete Kyle Brown and Western Carolina field athlete Matt Evans.
