DAVIDSON, N.C. - Rounding out a three-match home stand, the Davidson wrestling team could not overcome an early deficit to Appalachian State, dropping a 25-9 Southern Conference contest Tuesday night at John M. Belk Arena.
After Davidson (4-10, 1-3 SoCon) fell behind, 13-0, to start the match, Charlie Wolff picked up the team’s first points with a 7-4 decision, cutting the Appalachian State lead to 13-3. Wolff scored a takedown in all three periods on the way to victory.
Junior Ben Altman sliced the ASU advantage back into single digits with his 5-0 decision over Austin Annas at 125. Altman never trailed in the match, scoring a pair of takedowns and recording over five minutes of riding time for his 16th win of the season.
Appalachian State (6-14, 1-2) then took victories at the next two classes to stretch its lead to 21-6 before freshman David DeCamp used a three-point near fall in the first period to fuel his 10-7 decision at 149.
In the final match of the night, the Mountaineers wrapped up the team victory with a 9-1 major decision to push the final tally to 25-9.
Davidson will hit the road for their final tri-meet of the season when they head to Anderson, S.C., to battle Anderson University and Belmont Abbey College. The match against Anderson is scheduled for 6 p.m., with the match with Belmont Abbey scheduled for 7 p.m.

UNC Greensboro 25, Liberty 13
GREENSBORO, NC ? The UNC Greensboro wrestling team won seven matches en route to a 25-13 win against Liberty on Tuesday night in Fleming Gymnasium.
The match began at 174 pounds and Aaron Kelly gave the Flames an early 4-0 lead after scoring a 12-1 major decision against Brett Miller.
Sophomore Mikal McKee was able to get those points right back after scoring a late takedown and near fall to win by major decision, 13-5, over Chris Dagget.
Jeremy Cannon put the Spartans ahead for the rest of the night by scoring an early takedown and holding on for the 3-0 win against Brandon Johnson at 197 pounds. Joe Sheffield pushed his dual record this season to 11-3 after using a pair of takedowns to defeat Andrew Wilson, 5-1.
Each team received a forfeit the next two matches as Mitchell Johnson received a forfeit at 125 pounds for UNCG and Christian Smith got a forfeit at 133 pounds.
In the one of closest matches of the evening, Chris Bencivenga won a 2-1 decision against Tim Harner. Bencivenga scored a first period takedown and was able to hold off Harner in the final minutes to preserve the victory. Frankie Gayeski pulled the team score within 19-13 after scoring a 6-0 decision over Ben Wilmore at 149 pounds.
Andrew Saunders clinched the win for the Spartans with a 7-3 decision over Shaun Smith at 157 pounds. Victor Hojilla picked up a close win in the final match of the evening at 165 pounds. The two wrestlers ended up in a scramble with just seconds left and the score tied at 3.
Just as it looked like we were heading into overtime, Hojilla was able to gain control of Brad Clark to record the takedown with just two seconds left in the match.
UNCG will have eight days off before returning to the mat to host ACC foe N.C. State on Wednesday, Feb. 11, in a 7 p.m. match.
