Davidson 6, South Carolina State 1

DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson women's tennis took five of six singles matches on its way to a 6-1 triumph over South Carolina State for its first win of the 2009 campaign on Tuesday afternoon at the Knobloch Tennis Center.

Leading the way in the singles action was senior Michele Fanney, who scored a 6-2, 6-2 win at No.1 for her first win of her final collegiate season. She also teamed up with freshman Molly McDevitt at the No. 1 doubles spot for an

8-6 victory over Daria Sekerina and Aniko Kiss as Davidson took all three doubles matches to grab a 1-0 lead to start the match.

McDevitt, playing in her second collegiate match, took home a 6-3, 6-4 win at the No. 6 spot for her first win of her young Wildcat career.

Sophomore Alison Rauh picked up her first win of the season with a straight set 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 3, while junior Virginia Berry, who was Rauh's doubles partner, also scored a straight set win with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at the No. 2 singles spot.

Junior Ali Gores picked up the first win of her Wildcat career with a third set tiebreaker win at the No. 5 singles slot. Gores took the first set, 6-2, but dropped a 6-2 decision in the second set. Because the match was decided, Gores and I-Chun Amy Chen played a third set tiebreaker that Gores captured by the score of 10-7.

Gores also teamed up with sophomore Samantha Galainena at the No. 3 doubles slot for an 8-3 win.

The Wildcats will host both Wingate and Liberty in a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 7. Match time starts at 10 a.m. against Wingate, followed by a 3 p.m. dual vs. Liberty.
