ASU Men, Women Lead SoCon Championships After Day One

CLEMSON, S.C. ? Day one of the 2009 Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships came to an end today (Feb. 28) with Appalachian State atop both the men’s (83 points) and women’s (82 points) standings.

 

The day began with the opening events of the men’s heptathlon and the women’s pentathlon.

 

Western Carolina junior Matt Evans leads after four events in the heptathlon on the strength of three-first place finishes. Evans won the long jump with a leap of 6.41 meters (21? feet), the shot put with a throw of 12.45 meters (40-10? feet) and the high jump with a leap of 2.08 meters (6-9? feet).

 

Samford freshman Donald Cooper won the heptathlon 60-meter hurdles in a time of 7.19.

 

Georgia Southern sophomore Lynndsey Hyter won the women’s pentathlon on the strength of her victory in the long jump and a pair of second-place finishes in the 60 hurdles and high jump. Hyter took the long jump with a leap of 5.99 meters (19-8 feet).

 

Winning the pentathlon 60-hurdles was Appalachian State’s Kiara Crutchfield with a time of 8.92. 2008 pentathlon champion Melanie Trumbo of Georgia Southern won the pentathlon high jump with a leap of 1.72 meters (5-7? feet). Western Carolina’s Alicia Gainey won the pentathlon shot put with a throw of 11.81 meters (38-9 feet). Samford junior Elyse Rippe won the pentathlon 800-meter run with a time of 2:27.99. 

 

Furman’s Patrick Morgan won the men’s 3000-meter run with a time of 8:26.45, while Appalachian State’s Meg Gaffney won the women’s 3,000 run with a time of 9:47.21.

 

In the men’s distance medley Appalachian State won with a time of 10:16.38. The team consisted of Bud Galloway (1200), Carlos Carter (400), Nick O’Keefe (800) and Josh Houser (1600).

 

In the women’s distance medley Samford set a new SoCon record with a time of 11:52.69. The team consisted of Jessica Van Ausdall (1200), Ashley Flowers (400), Hillary Neal (800) and Cori Christensen (1600). 

 

The Mountaineers’ Whitney Smyre won the women’s shot put with a throw of 13.14 meters (43-1? feet).

 

The Catamounts’ Evans continued his winning ways with a victory in the men’s high jump with a leap of 2.11 meters (6-11 feet).

 

Georgia Southern’s Hyter won her second event of the day as she took the long jump title with a leap of 5.97 meters (19-7 feet).

 

The Citadel freshman Kevin Hardy won the men’s long jump with a leap of 7.37 meters (24-2? feet).

 

Appalachian State’s Malcolm Styers won the men’s shot put with a throw of 16.56 meters (54-4 feet).

 

Samford’s Patrick Wells claimed the men’s pole vault with a jump of 4.75 meters (15-7 feet).

 

College of Charleston freshman Emily Smith claimed the women’s high jump title with a NCAA Provisional leap of 1.78 meters (5-10 feet).

 

Preliminary trials also began today for the following men’s and women’s events: 60, 200-meter run, 400-meter run, 800 and the 60 hurdles.

 

Qualifying first in the men’s 60 was Western Carolina’s Manteo Mitchell in a time of 6.77. The Catamounts’ Felicia Paulding qualified first in the women’s 60 in a time of 7.57.

 

Mitchell qualified first in the men’s 200 with an NCAA Provisional time of 21.39. Paulding qualified first in the women’s 200 with a time of 24.89. 

 

Qualifying first in the men’s 400 was WCU’s Benny Davis in a time of 49.58. The Catamounts Jane’t Carothers qualified first in the women’s 400 with a time of 55.70.

 

ASU’s Chris Moen earned the top spot for tomorrow’s men’s 800 finals with a time of 1:55.11, while Samford’s Hillary Neal qualified first for the women’s 800 finals with a time of 2:12.35.

 

Appalachian State’s Daniel Neal qualified first in the men’s 60 hurdles with a time of 8.14, while Mountaineers’ sophomore Michelle Brutus qualified first in the women’s 60 hurdles with a time of 8.96.

 

Day two begins tomorrow (March 1) at 10:00 a.m., with the men’s heptathlon 60-meter hurdles.
