SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The 2009 Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships began today, Saturday, February 28 at the Clemson University Track and Field Complex in Clemson, S.C.

The championships run through Sunday, with the awards ceremony tentatively scheduled for 4:40 p.m. ET. The championships will be making a fourth consecutive appearance at the 1,800-seat facility.

The Western Carolina Catamounts are the defending champions on both the men’s and women’s sides, with the men winning two out of the last three.

Defending champions returning on the men’s side include Western Carolina’s Manteo Mitchell (60-meter, 200-meter and 400-meter), Drew Tucker (800-meter) and Daniel Joseph (high jump) and Appalachian State’s Daniel Neal (60-meter hurdles), Mike Wilson (pole vault) and Matt Boruff (heptathlon).

Defending champions returning on the women’s side include Chattanooga’s Shelley Taylor (3,000-meter), Appalachian State’s Shea Snow (pole vault) and Georgia Southern’s Melanie Trumbo (pentathlon).
