UNC Greensboro 33, Campbell 6
GREENSBORO, NC ? UNC Greensboro won nine matches as it cruised to a 33-6 victory on Senior Night over Campbell on Wednesday evening in Fleming Gymnasium.
Mitchell Johnson set the tone for the rest of the evening in the opening match at 125 pounds against C.J Gittens. Johnson was on his way to scoring a major decision after leading 12-4 after the second period, but he was able to turn Gittens and record the pin at the 5:21 mark. Casey Boyle extended the Spartan lead to 9-0 after scoring a 7-3 decision over Richie Apolinar at 133 pounds.
Ethan Carmody scored the only team points for the Camels on the evening after picking up a forfeit at 141 pounds. Ben Wilmore pushed the team lead to 13-6 as he pitched a 12-0 shutout over Matt King at 149 pounds.
Andrew Saunders was up next at 157 pounds where he used two takedowns and a near-fall to score an 8-2 decision over Jake Fose. Victor Hojilla scored early and often as he built up a 7-2 lead as he went on to defeat Steve Wiktorek by a 16-7 major decision.
Sophomore Byron Sigmon made the team score 23-6 in favor of the home squad after defeating Ryan Ham, 6-3, at 174 pounds. Fellow sophomore Mikal McKee recorded his amazing 11th major decision of the year by defeating Kyle Higgins, 17-6, at 184 pounds.
Jeremy Cannon used a first period takedown and a third period escape as he defeated Parker Burns, 3-0. Joe Sheffield capped off the evening for UNCG by scoring a 7-2 win over Khiry Reid at 285 pounds to make the final team score 33-6.
After tonight’s match the Spartans will have 10 days off before traveling to Charleston, S.C., for the 2009 Southern Conference Wrestling Championships.
