Miami, Central Arkansas Win Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic
Kiawah Island, S.C. - Miami and Central Arkansas both finished with a 904 after 54 holes to share the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Women's Golf Classic Championship held Feb. 22-24 at Cougar Point and Oak Point on Kiawah Island, S.C. The College of Charleston fired a 298 in the third round to finish sixth with a three-day total of 915. The top 22 teams played the final round at Cougar Point, while the remaining 21 teams played a flight championship at Oak Point.
East Tennessee State finished third with a 908 and in fourth was Florida with a 912. Mississippi finished just one stroke behind for fifth.
Texas State fired a 946 total to take home the Flight Championship. The team finished tied for 22nd overall.
Central Arkansas' Nicole Forshner and East Tennessee State's Sinead O'Sullivan took home individual medalist honors with a 218 each.
Kirchmayr tied for third with a 220 to lead the Cougars, followed by Emily Rapp who tied for 33rd with a 229. Leigh Whittaker shot a 232 for a tie at 48th and tied for 66th was Fiona Puyo with her 235. Courtney Brink tied for 103rd with a 240. Gabi Zuber competed as an individual and tied for 170th with a 252.
The Cougars are next in action when they host the Pinehurst Challenge in Pinehurst, N.C., Mar. 2-3.

Western Carolina Women’s Golf Finished Tied for 12th at Spring-Opening Edwin Watts / Kiawah Island Intercollegiate
Freshman Blaire Minter led the Catamounts with a 12th-place finish
Kiawah Island, S.C. ? Led by a three-round, eight-over par 224 by freshman Blaire Minter, the Western Carolina women’s golf team slipped four spots in the final standings, finishing tied for 12th Tuesday at the spring season-opening Edwin Watts / Kiawah Island Intercollegiate held at the Cougar Point and Oak Point Golf Courses.
WCU finished with a three-round score of 925, its best 54-hole score of the season and a tally that ranks 16th all-time in the school record book.
Second-round leader, Miami (FL), and Central Arkansas ? which shot a tournament-low, six-over 294 on Tuesday ? each carded three-round totals of 904 to share team championship honors. East Tennessee State was four strokes in arrears at 908 followed by No. 27 Florida (912) and No. 34 Mississippi (913) rounding out the top five.
Western was the second-highest Southern Conference finisher as tournament host, College of Charleston, was sixth at 915, with the Catamounts finishing tied for 12th with a three-day total of 925. Elon was 20th at 937, followed by Wofford (T-35th) and The Citadel (1,043).
ETSU’s Sinead O’Sullivan and Nichole Forshner of Central Arkansas matched each other stroke-for-stroke, posting identical rounds of 74, 73 and one-under 71 on Tuesday to share tournament individual medalist honors at two-over, 218.
With the championship round going with a shot gun start on the Cougar Point course and the flight championship at Oak Point, Minter birdied her second hole of the day after starting on No. 7.
She suffered a bogey on the ninth before heading to the front nine at even par. The Marietta, Ga., native managed 12 pars and three bogies over her final 15 holes to shoot three-over, 75, and finish the event at 224, her career-low score on 54 holes.
Junior Desiree Karlsson, who opened play tied for 21st, had a very eventful final 18 holes on Tuesday. The Ljunghusen, Sweden, native opened with four birdies through her first eight holes to stand at four-under on the back nine. However, a double-bogey on the par 4, 17th and a quadruple bogey on the par 4, 18th dropped her to four-over with seven to play. Karlsson finished with a 77 on the round and a three-day total of 229 in a tie for 33rd-place.
Much like her countryman, Karlsson, sophomore Josefine Sundh got off to a strong start on Tuesday with three birdies and a bogey through eight holes, but also ran into a double-bogey on the 17th to head to the front nine at even par. The Kumla, Sweden, product finished five-over, matching Karlsson’s 77 to finish at 236 and tied for 75th.
Rounding out Western’s finishers ere Rachel Nelson, who shot seven-over 79 on Tuesday for a three-day total of 236, tied with Sundh for 75th. Junior Elin Mickelsson, who was coming back from missing the final tournament of the fall due to injury, shot 256 and finished tied for 190th.
Western Carolina returns to action this weekend, March 1-3, at the Pinehurst Challenge, the second-straight event hosted by the College of Charleston. The event will be held at Pinehurst No. 8, which opened in 1996 and hosted the 1997 and 1998 PGA Club Pro Championship.
Lady Mocs Finish 16th at Wildcat Invitational
PUERTO PENASCO, Mexico---Freshman Maria Juliana Loza shot an even par 72, but it was not enough to move the Chattanooga women’s golf team up the scoreboard as the Lady Mocs finished 16th at the Wildcat Invitational played at the Peninsula Golf Club. No. 40 UTC shot a final round 320 to end the 54-hole event with a total of 958.
Loza bounced back from an opening round 86 to post scores of 78 and 72 to lead the Lady Mocs finishing tied for 63rd, 236. The 72 is her third par round of her young career.
Fellow freshman Maria Salinas finished three shots behind Loza at 239 for 70th place shooting a second consecutive 81. Sophomores Emma de Groot (83) and Christine Wolf (84) ended up tied for 76th finishing at 244. New arrival Moa Duf finished tied for 80th in her first collegiate event shooting 249 following a final round 85.
Third-ranked UCLA claimed a wire-to-wire win shooting a one-under par 287 in its final round which was the low round of the day. The Bruins shot a 54-hole total of five-over par 869 to top No. 1 Arizona State and No. 2 USC by nine shots at 878.
Medalist honors were shared by New Mexico’s Jodi Ewart and USC’s Lizette Salas. The duo shot three-under par 213. Salas started the day in sixth-place two shots off the lead, while Ewart was the only player in the field to shoot three straight par or better rounds. ASU’s Carlota Ciganda and Oklahoma State’s Caroline Hedwall finished one shot back at 214 (-2).
The Lady Mocs return to action Mar. 9-10 in Jacksonville, Fla., for the Eagle Landing Invitational at Oakleaf Plantation.
Mills, Elon Finish Strong at Kiawah Island Classic
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. ? Danielle Mills posted a one-over-par 73 in final-round action, propelling Elon to a 20th-place finish in the 43-team field of the three-day, three-round Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic women’s golf tournament Tuesday afternoon at the Cougar Point and Oak Point Golf Clubs.
The Phoenix (328-302-307?937) finished ahead of UNC Wilmington (941), Mississippi State (946), Texas State (946), Southern Methodist (951), Longwood (957), Jacksonville State (959), Winthrop (963), Charleston Southern (963), Richmond (968), Maryland (972), Cincinnati (972), Kennesaw State (972), Ball State (975), Missouri State (978), USC Upstate (981), Wofford (981), Old Dominion (989), Southern Illinois (990), Bucknell (993), Bradley (994), Mercer (996), Marshall (1,007) and The Citadel (1,043) in the 54-hole event.

Tara McFadden (tied-81st place/84-76-77?237), Dani Mullin (tied-148th place/88-79-81?248) and Kelsey Johnson (200th place/87-90-84?261) all turned in scorecards for Elon.
The Citadel Finishes 43rd at Kiawah Classic
Kiawah, S.C. ? After completing their best of three rounds with a 337 at the Edwin Watts Kiawah Classic, The Citadel Golf team finished 43rd with a three-day total of 1043 on Tuesday in Kiawah, S.C.
Miami and Central Arkansas, with three-day totals of 904, were declared co-champions due to both teams needing to make their respective flights home. For the same reason, Central Arkansas’s Nicole Forshner and East Tennessee State’s Sinead O'Sullivan were named individual co-champions after going head-to-head each round and finishing two over par with a 218.
Freshmen Alanna-Jean Keith and Bree Baumgartner led the Bulldogs throughout the tournament. Baumgartner shot a team best of 79 in round three to finish second on the team and tied for 180th overall with a total of 254. Keith, who led The Citadel in the first two rounds, shot an 81 and led the Bulldogs with a three-day total of 248 and tie at 148th. Brittany Nagel (270), Christine Clark (271) and Sheri Rockefeller (310) rounded out the Bulldog competition finishing in 205th, 206th and 214th places. Rockefeller improved nine strokes in the final round, the most of any Bulldog throughout the tournament.
Also representing the Southern Conference, tournament host College Charleston finished sixth with a team total of 915, while Western Carolina finished tied for 12th with Augusta State (925), Elon (927) in 20th and Wofford (981) tied for 35th place.

Women’s Golf Improves to 35th in Final Round of Kiawah Island Classic
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. ? Senior Erin Wells shot a team-best 77 in the third round of the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic to lead the Wofford women’s golf team to a 35th place tie.
Wells led the team for the weekend, finishing tied for 81st with an overall score of 237 in the “largest event in women’s collegiate golf.”
The total team score of 981 placed Wofford above Southern Conference opponent The Citadel.
