SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Furman sophomore Monica Arguello has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for all matches played February 17-23 the league office announced Tuesday (Feb. 24). Arguello went 2-0 in both singles and doubles play last week as Furman posted wins over Presbyterian (7-0) and No. 64 Winthrop (6-1). The Player of the Week award is voted on by the league’s sports information directors.
Arguello came away with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Presbyterian’s Heather Isbell at No. 1 singles and recorded a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Winthrop’s Patricia Coimbra at No. 2 singles. Arguello teamed with Brooke Mosteller at No. 3 doubles and downed Presbyterian’s Cara Caruso and Isbell, 8-4. Playing with Laura Gioia at No. 1 doubles, the Paladins topped Winthrop’s Patricia Coimbra and Elizaveta Zayteseva, 8-2. Arguello has now won three of her last four matches in both singles and doubles competition.
Furman (3-5) returns to the courts March 12 when the Lady Paladins take on Portland as part of the University of San Diego Invitational.
Other top performers in the Southern Conference included Elon’s Anna Milian, Georgia Southern’s Melanie Rolle, UNC Greensboro’s Alejandra Guerra and Samford’s Taylor Morgan.
