Charleston’s Joash Brodin and The Citadel’s Zach Garrett excelled on opening weekend
SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? College of Charleston first baseman Joash Brodin has been named Southern Conference Player of the Week while The Citadel’s Zach Garrett has been chosen as the Pitcher of the Week for the opening weekend of the 2009 baseball season.
Brodin, a switch-hitting senior from Olympia, Wash., batted .545 with two home runs and seven RBI as College of Charleston (3-0) swept a three-game set from Miami (Ohio) to open the season. Brodin recorded a hit in each game, including a 3-for-4 effort in game one to go along with a home run and three RBI. In Sunday’s series finale, Brodin was 2-for-5 at the plate with a home run, two runs scored and four RBI.
Garrett, a true freshman from Alpharetta, Ga., earned his first career win with a nearly flawless 6.0 innings pitched Sunday against Indiana State, striking out seven Sycamore batters while not allowing a run. He totaled nine strikeouts throughout the weekend in 8.0 innings of work while only allowing four hits in 31 batters faced.
The SoCon’s weekly awards are voted on by the league’s baseball sports information directors.
Other top hitters this week were Davidson’s Chase FitzPatrick, Elon’s Cory Harrilchak, Western Carolina’s Ross Heffley, Wofford’s Alex Lee, Samford’s Mason Meredeth, Georgia Southern’s A.J. Wirnsberger, Furman’s Reese Wade, Appalachian State’s David Towarnicky and The Citadel’s Bryan Altman.
Other top pitchers this week were Western Carolina’s Corey Martin, Appalachian State’s Taylor Miller, Georgia Southern’s Chris Mederos, Samford’s Andrew Jones, College of Charleston’s Owen Brittle, Wofford’s Gus White and Elon’s Jimmy Reyes.
