SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Appalachian State’s Katie Boyd has been named Southern Conference Softball Player of the Week while the Mountaineers’ Ashley Stubbs has been named SoCon Pitcher of the Week for all games Feb. 16-22, the conference office announced Monday. The awards are voted on by the league's softball sports information directors.
Boyd, garnering her second-straight Player of the Week award, went 7-for-10 with a .700 batting average this past weekend as ASU went 3-1 at the Kickin’ Chicken Classic hosted by Coastal Carolina in Conway, S.C. The sophomore from Walkertown N.C., also hit two home runs, and had three doubles and 10 RBIs during the four contests. She’s 12-for-21 on the year, with four doubles, five home runs and 14 RBIs.
Stubbs pitched the SoCon’s first no-hitter of the season Sunday as the Mountaineers beat SoCon-rival Western Carolina, 10-0 in a non-conference contest. The freshman pitched all five innings while striking out six with one walk during the contest. In a 4-3 victory over Coastal Carolina on Saturday, the Balm, Fla., native pitched seven innings and had eight strikeouts while not allowing an earned run. For the weekend, Stubbs threw 14 strikeouts while notching a perfect 0.00 ERA. While at the plate, Stubbs managed to collect seven hits with two RBIs and a .583 batting average in 12 at-bats.
Also nominated for Player of the Week were Samford’s Kristy Lawrence, Georgia Southern’s Robyne Siliga, Furman’s Morgan Hughey, UNC Greensboro’s Mary Catherine Vercoe, College of Charleston’s Kristie Shifflet, Elon’s Kaitlyn Piazolla and Western Carolina’s Stephanie Beatty.
Also nominated for Pitcher of the Week were Elon’s Melanie Helterbran, Chattanooga’s Michelle Fuzzard, Samford’s Stephanie Royall, Western Carolina’s Lauren Ross, Furman’s Lana Mackey, College of Charleston’s Shannon Howard and Georgia Southern’s Brianna Streetmon.
