UNC Greensboro 24, The Citadel 6

 

CHARLESTON, SC ? UNC Greensboro won eight of the 10 matches on the afternoon as they cruised to a 24-6 win over The Citadel in the final conference match for both squads. The win solidified UNCG's second place finish in the Southern Conference.

 

The match began at 125 pounds where Tyler Sim defeated Mitchell Johnson by a narrow 5-3 decision. It was the first conference loss of the season for Johnson. Casey Boyle came back to tie the match at 3 after he scored a 7-5 decision against Richard Alarcon.

 

No. 20 Chris Bencivenga, who returned to the rankings this week, registered a 9-7 win over Derek Royster to help continue the Spartans' run of seven straight wins. Ben Wilmore continued the winning ways by scoring a 6-2 decision against Pierre Frazile.

 

Andrew Saunders was up next at 157 pounds, as he defeated Keith Koziel, 8-2. Victor Hojilla scored the most points in a match on the afternoon after scoring an 11-6 win against Derek Sickel.

 

Byron Sigmon made the team score, 18-3, in favor of UNCG after scoring a 4-3 decision against J.C. Oddo. At 184 pounds, Mikal McKee defeated Kelby Smith, 5-2, to push the Spartan lead to 21-3.

 

Odie Delaney got the Bulldogs back on the scoreboard after defeating Jeremy Cannon, 5-4, at 197 pounds. Cannon was able to tie the match at 4, but Delaney earned a point for riding time at the end of the match to claim the win. Joey Sheffield capped off the afternoon for UNCG by scoring a 5-1 decision against Aaron Brown.

 

The Spartans return to the mat on Wednesday in the regular season finale against Campbell. The match, which also marks Senior Day for five seniors, will begin at 7 p.m. in Fleming Gymnasium.
