CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? No. 13 North Carolina swept its way through all three doubles matches and all six singles flights, turning back Elon 7-0 in a nonconference women’s tennis meeting Thursday night at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
In doubles action, the No. 45 duo of Sanaz Marand and Katrina Tsang dispatched Anna Milian and Paige Kensrue 8-2 at No. 1, Meg Fanjoy and Laura Reichert ousted Elisa Simonetti and Daleen Kloppers 8-1 at No. 2 and Linzee Mabrey and Stefi Gjine topped Melissa Wolf and Hayley Wahl 8-0 at No. 3.
No. 47 Marand (over Milian 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1), Jelena Durisic (over Kensrue 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2), Reichert (over Simonetti 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3), Jocelyn Ffriend (over Wolf 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4), Haley Hemm (over Kloppers 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5) and Gjine (over Laura Graybill 6-1, 6-0 at No.6) were all victorious in singles play.
The Phoenix (4-5) will now return home to open Southern Conference competition when Georgia Southern visits the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center at 11 a.m. Saturday. The Tar Heels (9-2) will hit the road to visit No. 5 Notre Dame at 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27.
North Carolina 7, Davidson 0
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? The Davidson women’s tennis team took its second defeat to a ranked opponent when they traveled to No. 13 North Carolina and fell by the count of 7-0 on Thursday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
Davidson, which dropped a 7-0 decision to No. 41 Virginia Tech, Feb. 14, saw its record to fall to an even 3-3, while UNC improved to 9-2 on the year. The Tar Heels also defeated Elon earlier in the day.
UNC opened the match by sweeping the doubles point. From there, the Wildcats battled hard in singles play, but fell short in all six matches to fall by the count of 7-0.
Virginia Berry nearly forced a third set by taking Austin Smith to a tie breaker in the second set. Smith came in ranked 103rd in the nation. Berry was up by the count of 5-2 before Smith rallied for the tie breaker win.
The Wildcats take an eight-day break before hosting East Carolina on Feb. 27 at 2 p.m.
