SoCon Women's Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Appalachian State track athlete Meg Gaffney and Georgia Southern long jumper Lynndsey Hyter have been named Southern Conference Women’s Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for all meets Feb. 12-18, the league office announced Thursday. The awards are voted on by the league’s head track and field head coaches.

 

Gaffney, a graduate student, won the mile run at the Tiger Paw Invitational last weekend in Clemson, S.C. She is currently ranked first in the SoCon in the event, and moved into second place in Mountaineer history in the event. The Pompton Lakes, N.J., native also leads the SoCon in the 3,000-meter run and is a member of the first-place distance medley relay team. The award is Gaffney’s second of the season.  

 

Hyter, competing at the Carolina Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C., moved into fifth place in the SoCon with a time of 9.10 in the 60-meter hurdles. The 60 race was just her second race in the event. The sophomore also jumped 19’7” in the long jump, good for first in the conference.

 

Also nominated for this week’s track award was Samford’s Cori Christensen, while Appalachian State’s Ashley Beale was nominated for this week’s field award.
