Appalachian State ? men ? Valentine Open
BOONE, N.C- Appalachian State University men's track and field posted yet another strong performance at the Valentine Open, returning home to the Holmes Center for the first time in over a month Thursday afternoon.
Senior John Svoboda captured first, setting a new Appalachian Holmes Center record in the 300-meter dash and moved into second on ASU's all-time list in the event. Teammates Mark Sturgis and Ricky Harris were impressive as well, taking home second and third overall, moving them into seventh and ninth on Appalachian's all-time list.
In the 55-meter dash, Sturgis and Harris finished first and second with times of 6.49 and 6.52, while DeSean Pearce came in fourth, finishing the race in 6.55 and in the 55 hurdles, Phillip Bush and Matt Boruff paced Appalachian, placing second and third overall.
Pearce had a strong showing in the 200-meter dash as well, coming in first with a time of 22.59, while fellow freshman AJ Dohanic came in fourth.
Nick O'Keefe also posted a record-breaking day for the Black and Gold, as he broke the ASU Holmes Center in the 800-meter run, by .03, running the race in 1:55.84 and finishing first. Teammate Nash Dunn came in second in the event.
Sean Thompson was the lone Mountaineer in the 500-meter run, grabbing first place in 1:09.02.
Carlos Carter kept with the Apps first place winnings, notching first in the 400-metere dash with a time of 50.69, while Ryan Harris came in second in the mile run, running the race in 4:31. 99.
Darius Purcell continued with his strong performance in the high jump, leaping 6’-8” for first place, with Matt Pfingst placing second, jumping 6’-6” and Matt Boruff finishing third with a 6’-4” jump.
In the pole vault, Boruff recorded a personal best vault of 15’-1,” to finish second in the event, with Zach Smith, Landon Patterson, Jack Bell, Jake Goodchild and Matt Pfingst notching the 4-8 spots.
Mason Campbell led the way for ASU in the 3000-meter run, finishing first with a time of 9:09.29.
Capping off Thursday's action, the Appalachian 4x400-meter relay team, also grabbed a first-place finish.

BOONE, N.C. - Continuing with its solid performances, Appalachian State University women's track and field posted a strong outing at the Valentine Open Thursday afternoon at the Holmes Center.
Sophomore Kiara Crutchfield got the Apps off to a strong start, notching a first-place finish in the 55-meter hurdles, setting a new personal best in the event with a time of 8.36. The mark was good enough to move her into eighth on ASU's all-time list in the event.
Also in the 55 hurdles, Michelle Brutus, Porsha' Evans-Hardy and Naadia Crutchfield grabbed the third, fourth and fifth-place finishes.
Sophomore Nadia Liriano continued with ASU's strong showing, as she finished first in the 300-meter dash and set a new Holmes Center and ASU record. Liriano also moves into second on Appalachian's all-time list in the event, finishing the race in 40.44.
Danielle Thorpe and Crystal Dukes paced the Black and Gold in the 55 dash, with the duo finishing first and second, posting times of 7.33 and 7.37 respectively. Thorpe also notched the first place spot in the 200-meter dash.
Dukes took the second and third-place finishes in the shot put and high jump with a throw of 38-6.25 and a jump of 4-9.75.
In the 800-meter run, Dani Reese also set a new ASU Holmes Center Record, placing second overall in the event with a time of 2:20.65.
Rounding out the competition, the ASU 4x400-meter relay team captured first with a time of 4:25.08.
Appalachian State ? men ? Tiger Paw Invitational
CLEMSON, S.C. - With the Southern Conference Championships looming in the near distance, Appalachian State University men's track and field continued to ready themselves, as the Mountaineers posted strong performances over the weekend at the Tiger Paw Invitational hosted by Clemson University.
Freshman Dennis Moore had one of the strongest showings of the day for the Apps, finishing tied for fifth in the 60-meter dash, running the race in a time of 6.92. The finish was a new personal best, shaving seven seconds off his previous best time and was good enough to move him into tied for fifth on Appalachian's all-time list in the event.
Moore was strong in the 200-meter dash as well, placing sixth with a time of 22.58. Teammate John Svoboda led ASU in the event, coming in fourth with a time of 22.30.
In the 5000-meter run Asmeron Desta and Sean Soderman notched the third and fourth-place finishes while Mike Walker placed eighth in the 3000-meter run.
Chris Moen finished fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:56.18 and also came in eighth in the mile with a time of 4:19.97, while Josh Houser took home ninth.
Sophomore Malcolm Styers posted strong showings in the weight throw and shot put, grabbing the seventh and eighth-place finishes.
Rounding out the meet, the men's 4x400-meter relay team of Dennis Moore, Daniel Neal, John Svoboda and Nick Zeller finished third on the afternoon with a time of 3:21.81.
ASU takes a one week hiatus before returning to action at the 2009 Southern Conference Championships. The squad finished second at the indoor championships in 2008, but captured the outdoor title.
Appalachian State ? women ? Tiger Paw Invitational
CLEMSON, S.C.- Appalachian State University women's track and field continued to ready themselves for the upcoming Southern Conference Championships as the Apps posted yet another solid outing at the Tiger Paw Invitational over the weekend hosted by Clemson University.
Junior Ashley McKiver led the Black and Gold in the sprints, placing tenth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.79 and seventh in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.68.
In the 400-meter dash freshman Asia Dunlap was impressive, running the race in the 58.92, while teammate Lynda Hiller came in eighth overall.
Meghan Gaffney continued with her dominant performances in the middle and distance events, as she captured first in the mile, finishing with a time of 4:53.05. The finish was a personal best for the graduate student, and shaved three seconds off of her old PR. It was also good enough to keep her at second in ASU's record books in the event.
Hannah Parks was solid in the distance events, taking home third in the 5000-meter run with a time of 18:53.67 and 15th in the 3000-meter run.
Teammates Natalie Shaw grabbed the sixth-place spot in the 5000 run, while Jen Povick edged out Parks for the 14th place.
Whitney Smyre was strong again in the throws for Appalachian, notching third in the weight throw with a throw of 55-4.5 and fifth in the shot put. Carla Durham finished fifth in the weight throw.
In the high jump Rebecca Hazeltine was victorious, finishing first with a leap of 5’-8”.
Shea Snow and Ashley Beale led the Apps in the pole vault, both vaulting 11-10.5, finishing sixth and seventh on the afternoon.
Capping off the meet 4x400-meter relay of Dunlap, Monica Johnson, Nadia Liriano and Hiller placed third with a time of 4:00.06.
Appalachian has a week off from competition, before returning to action Saturday February 28 to compete at the Southern Conference Championships in Clemson, S.C. The Apps placed second at the championships in 2008.
College of Charleston ? women ? Carolina Invitational
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- The College of Charleston women’s track and field team took part in the Dick Taylor Carolina Invitational on Friday.
Top performers on the day for the Cougars included Erin Stoddard (Mauldin, S.C.) who placed fifth in the 3000-meter run in a time of 10:24. In the one-mile run, Grace Loba (Orean, Va.) placed ninth in a time of 5:17, while Kristen Wolfe (Midlothian, Va.) finished just behind Loba in 11th with a time of 5:19.
The Cougars return to action on Saturday, Feb. 28th when they take part in the 2009 Southern Conference Indoor Championships in Clemson, S.C.
The Citadel ? Carolina Invitational
Chapel Hill, N.C. ? The Citadel thrower Christopher Castagno placed first in the 35lb. weight throw with a mark of 46’ 8.62” as the Bulldogs competed in the Carolina Invitational on Friday, Feb. 13 at the Eddie Smith Field House.
Castagno mark places him at eighth all-time in The Citadel's record books.
Senior Matt Earls and Quintin Turner had more top five finishes as Earls placed third in the 35lb. weight throw with a mark of 44’ 9.00” and Turner finished third with a mark of 43’ 4.07” in the shot put.
In the 800-meter run, Zach Johnson ran for a time of 1:56.93 for fifth place and James Harris jumped for a mark of 6’ 2.01” for fifth-place in the high jump. Harris' mark is the ninth best mark all-time. Emily Green had another successful weekend as she finished fifth in the 20lb. weight throw with a mark of 41’ 7.21”.
Corey Robinson threw for a mark of 41’ 10.75” in the shot put for a sixth-place finish and the men’s 4x400-meter relay team ran for sixth place with a time of 3:26.67.
Turner also placed eighth in the 35lb. weight throw with a mark of 44’ 1.52”.
In other Bulldog events, Jamel Brown ran a time of 8.40 in the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles and then sealed his 11th-place finish with a time of 8.49.
Megan Jenkins ran a record time of 5:19.54 for 12th place in the mile run, moving up to the first place spot in The Citadel's record books. Christopher Graham placed 13th with his time of 23.08 in the 200-meter dash and Christian Graham ran a personal best time of 7.19 in the 60-meter dash.
The Citadel will head to Clemson on Feb. 20-21 and then will have a week to prepare for the Southern Conference Indoor Championships on Feb. 28 ? March 1 in Clemson, S.C.
Davidson ? men ? Carolina Invitational
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Led by three runners earning top-ten finishes in the 3,000-meter run, the Davidson men’s track team continued their indoor season at the Dick Taylor Carolina Invitational on Friday at the Eddie Smith Field House on the campus of the University of North Carolina.
Senior Thad Sieracki turned in the top Wildcat finish on the day, taking a third-place spot in the 3,000-meters with a time of 8:38.30. He was joined in the top ten by classmates Alex Hoyt, whose time of 8:48.46 was good enough for seventh, and Lance Harden in ninth with a mark of 8:49.79
Continuing the ?Cats successes in the distance events, junior Peter Bruton brought home a pair of top-15 performances, including seventh in the mile run, tripping the tape in 4:24.33. Fellow junior Blake Evitt also earned a spot in the top-ten with his 4:25.88 mile and ninth-place finish.
On the field, senior Will Funderburg broke the 14-meter mark for the first time this season in the shot put, recording a top distance of 14.10 meters, placing him in seventh place in the event. Sophomore Bryce Jones set a new career-high height in the pole vault with his eighth place jump of 4.00 meters.
In their final tune-up before the Southern Conference Indoor Championships, the Wildcat men will travel to Clemson, S.C., the site of the conference championship meet, on Feb. 21 to compete in the Tiger Invitational hosted by Clemson University.
Davidson ? women ? Carolina Invitational
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Wildcat women's track and field team returned to action, competing in the Dick Taylor Carolina Invitational Friday night at the Eddie Smith Field House on the campus of the University of North Carolina.
The Wildcats were led by Caroline Sanker who finished sixth in the mile with a time of 5:13.63. Sarah Cline placed 29th in the event with a time of 5:29.05. Heather Conarroe finished 17th in the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:45.92.
In the sprints, Kim Colley continued to lead the Wildcats, finishing 23rd (8.11) in the 60 meters and 27th (26.68) in the 200 meters. Danielle Wright was 30th in the 60 meters (8.28) and 31st (26.97) in the 200 meters, and also competed in the 400 meters, finishing 25th with a time of 1:01.23.
The Wildcats will conclude the regular indoor season, traveling to Clemson for a meet on Feb. 21, before returning for the Southern Conference Indoor Championships on Feb. 28-March 1.
Elon ? women ? Liberty Meet
LYNCHBURG, Va. ? The Phoenix tracksters claimed two Elon records, captured three event titles and tallied 11 top-three performances at the Liberty Quad women’s indoor track and field meet Friday evening at the Tolsma Indoor Track Center.
Freshman Alyssa Girvin (44-01.25/fourth place) and sophomore Justine Robertson (44-00.00/fifth place) tossed the Phoenix weight throw record back and forth throughout the competition. Girvin’s best heave became the new school standard, bettering her teammate’s top throw by only one-and-a-quarter inch.
The Phoenix throwing duo also put forth a strong showing in the shot put as Robertson (12.08 meters/second place) and Girvin (a season-best 11.37 meters/third place) both landed top-three finishes. Robertson’s top toss fell just six inches shy of the best throw by eventual champion Monica Howard of Richmond.
Sophomore Lauren Hawkesworth’s performance (37.03.75/third place) in the triple jump matched teammate Veronica Day’s Elon milestone from earlier in the year. Hawkesworth went on to tally a third-place finish in the long jump with a season-best leap of 17-04.00.
In the 400-meter dash, the Phoenix received superior showings from freshman Amy Salek (57.33 seconds/first place), sophomore Melissa Turowski (59.73 seconds/third place) and sophomore Sarah Skogen (59.89 seconds/fourth place).
Elon ended up with top-three finishes by junior Jennine Strange (2:21.49/first place) and freshman Madison Russo (2:22.56/third place) in the 800-meter run while Phoenix freshman Allyson Costa (18:34.39/second place) emerged as the top collegiate finisher in the 5,000-meter run.
The Elon 4x400-meter relay team ? Skogen, freshman Lauren Wilmer, Turowski and Salek ? crossed the finish line in first place with a time of 4:00.03. Meanwhile, Phoenix sophomore Jacqueline Beliveau scored 3,033 points to finish the five-event Pentathlon in a tie for third place.
Other notable Elon performances were turned in by Salek in the 60-meter dash preliminaries (7.95 seconds/fourth place), freshman Dana Cataldo in the 200-meter dash (a season-best 26.68 seconds/fourth place), sophomore Courtney Weathers in the high jump (1.55 meters/fourth place) and freshman Amanda Rice in the 60-meter hurdles (9.65 seconds/sixth place).
The Phoenix will take next weekend off before heading to Clemson on Feb.28-March 1 for the 2009 Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Georgia Southern ? women ? Carolina Invitational
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? Track & Field picked up their first event win of the indoor season at the Carolina Invitational Friday.
Georgia Southern picked up a first place finish in the long jump invitational. Lynndsey Hyter (Dallas, Texas) finished first with a mark of 5.97 meters.
Millicent Brooks-Millender (Douglasville, Ga.) finished third in the triple jump invitational with a mark of 11.35 meters.
Amanda Spivy (Pembroke, Ga.) placed sixth in the weight throw with a mark of 12.45 meters.
Demetrise Anthony (Manchester, Ga.) improved on her prelim time and finished 12th in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.89.
Courtney Ware (Indianapolis, Ind.) finished 34th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.32.
Ashley Bush-Hardy (Fayetteville, Ga.) pulled in a top-20 finish in the 400-meter dash. She finished in 17th place with a time of 59.85.
Morgan Jefferson (Villa Rica, Ga.) and Shauntel Jennings (Stone Mountain, Ga.) both finished in the top-20 in the 800-meter run. Jefferson came in 13th place with a time of 2:24.20, and Jennings finished 16th with a time of 2:24.43.
Laura Fuller (Cartersville, Ga.) placed 22nd in the one-mile run. She finished with a time of 5:25.41.
Kassi Lee (Elberton, Ga.) finished 28th in the 3000-meter run with a time of 11:29.55.
Hyter qualified for the 60-meter hurdles finals with a time of 9.10. She finished 12th in the finals with a time of 9.14.
Georgia Southern’s 4x400-meter relay team finished fourth with a time of 3:57.60.
Jasmine Lightning (Dacula, Ga.) finished fourth in the high jump with a mark of 1.63 meters.
The Lady Eagles return to action at the Clemson Invitational Friday.
UNC Greensboro ? Carolina Invitational
CHAPEL HILL, NC ? Andy Clyne’s sixth place finish in the mile run led the UNC Greensboro track & field team at the Carolina Invitational on Friday evening in Chapel Hill, NC.
Clyne’s time of 4:24.23 in the mile broke his personal and team-best time this season by over six seconds. His previous best was 4:30.79 that he ran at the Liberty Open.
Another highlight for the Spartans was Michelle Chewens in the 800-meter run. Her time of 2:23.55 was not only a personal best, but it was also the fourth fastest time in school history.
Sophomore Taylor Hurst also had one of the best runs of his career. Hurst ran a 53.06 in the 400-meter which is just .01 seconds behind his personal best. The time was also good enough for fourth place in school history in the 400.
The Spartans will now have two weeks off before competing at the 2009 Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships. Located in Clemson, SC, the championships will be Saturday, Feb. 28, and Sunday, Mar. 1.

Day 1
CLEMSON, S.C. ---- Members of the Samford track and field teams set a school record for the third consecutive meet Friday night at the Clemson Tiger Paw Invitational. Freshman Cori Christensen and junior Jessica Van Ausdall both bypassed the school record in the 800 meters with Christensen finishing just 10 tenths of a second better than Van Ausdall.
Christensen ran the race in 2:15.34, which gave her second place, while Van Ausdall finished third with a time of 2:15.44. Hillary Neal also landed in the top ten of that same meet with a seventh-place finish and a time of 2:17.72.
Mary Barron had a season best in the pole vault with a vault of 3.32 meters (10'11") which landed her in 13th place out of 21 competitors.
The men's throwers continued to make their mark with several personal bests. Kyle Brown led the way in the 35-pound weight throw with a toss of 14.22 meters. Ryan Fee and Kyle Kirby had personal bests of 13.37 and 13.12 respectively.
Katie Almand had a season best in the 5000-meter race with a tenth-place finish and a time of 19:23.12. Ashley Flowers took second place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.47 while Marissa Brokaw came in 20th with a time of 1:02.60.
"This was an exciting day one with another school record being broken," Samford head coach Rod Tiffin said. "Mary Barron keeps improving and getting better each week and our three senior throwers once again did a great job for us. Our multi-event people keep plugging along and are getting better week in and week out. Overall, this was a great day one for us."
Donald Cooper posted a personal best time in the preliminaries of the men's 60-meter dash with a time of 7.37 but was not fast enough to qualify for the finals. Jordan Cole also ran a personal best of 53.76 in the men's 400 meters while Mitch Galloway was just behind with a time of 54.05.
Jay Maservy ran a personal best of 16:45.84 in the men's 5000 meters while Chas Keithan (1:58.34) and Matt Bryson (2:04.38) had personal bests in the men's 800 meters.
The Bulldogs will continue competition in the Tiger Paw Invitational tomorrow beginning in the morning. A full recap and results will be available on www.samfordsports.com upon completion of the day's events.

CLEMSON, S.C. ---- The Samford University track and field team posted another outstanding performance in day two of the Clemson Tiger Paw Invitational. Patrick Wells broke the second school record for the Bulldogs in days with his performance in the men's pole vault event.
Wells vaulted 15'10.50" to pass the school record set by Mark Holmes in 2006. Last night, Cori Christensen and Jessica Van Ausdall broke the Samford record for the 800 meters, an eight-year-old record set by Shana Ely.
Also in the men's pole vault David Polstra vaulted a personal best of 14'04.80", earning him ninth place.
Andrea Seccafien ran a personal best of 10:10.33 in the 3000 meters to take second place while Deana Zidar (10:44.68) and Alli Keithan (11:28.08) came in 17th and 25th respectively. Patrick Ollinger also ran a personal best in the men's 3000 meters with a time of 9:02.48, finishing in 13th place.
Samford's women's 4x400-meter run team (Ashley Flowers, Ashley Dance, Morgan Tyler, Hillary Neal) placed fourth in the relay (4:00.68) while the men (Donald Cooper, Chas Keithan, Will Denton, David Polstra) ran a season best 3:26.85 in their event.
Kyle Kirby tossed a personal best of 38'04'80" in the men's shot put preliminaries while Morgan Tyler took sixth in the women's triple jump with a leap of 37'10.70". Donald Cooper came in seventh in the men's high jump, clearing a height of 6'04.40".
"We had another great day," Samford head coach Rod Tiffin said. "We are in the position we want to be in right now and it was good to be able to get a feel for this track and facility we will be competing on for the conference championships in two weeks. We'll be back here again next weekend with a few people competing to get some last minute practice in for the conference meet. We are excited about where we are and about the SoCon Championships in a few weeks."
Samford will be back in Clemson next weekend to participate in the Tiger Invitational before heading back for the SoCon Indoor Championships the next weekend, Feb. 28.
Chattanooga ? MTSU Valentine Invitational
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. --- Seven Chattanooga runners earned top 5 finishes Saturday afternoon at the Middle Tennessee Valentine Invitational at the Murphy Center.
Lauren Anderson clocked a time of 59.60 and finished second in the women’s 400-meter run. Teammate Anneli Uys, reigning SoCon Track Athlete of the Week, finished sixth in the event in a time of 1:02.09.
Blake Ketron led a plethora of Chattanooga runners in the men’s Mile Run. Ketron finished third overall at 4:21.28 followed by Joshue Vasquez with a PR of 4:21.62. David Moore was fifth in the event at 4:23.00.
Shelley Taylor placed fourth in the women’s 800-meter run with a time of 2:20.74. In the women’s Mile Run, Jordyn Radke was the top Mocs’ finisher placing fifth in a time of 5:11.48. Emily Wood, running unattached, finished second in the event in a time of 5:07.90.
The Running Mocs will return to action Feb. 28-March 1 for the Southern Conference Championships to be hosted by Clemson University in Clemson, S.C.

Clemson, S.C. ? Western Carolina’s track & field teams earned one podium finish Friday night in the Tiger Paw Invitational. Bowers takes third place finish in the 400-meter run.
The freshman Bowers posted her best 400 time of the season with a time of 58.68 earning her the third place finish.
In the men’s 60-meter hurdles, Christian Bethune and Jordan Blazer both qualified for the finals. Bethune finished in fourth place and Blazer finished fifth in the finale of the 60-meter hurdles.
In the men’s 60 dash, Dominique Young and Christian Bethune both qualified for the finals.
Bethune finished in fifth place with a time of 6.92 and Young finished eighth with a time of 7.08.
Rounding out the first day of results was Lindsay Groce who finished fifth in the women’s 5000-meter run with a time of 18:55.65.
The Catamounts return to action tomorrow to finish to the Tiger Paw invitational being held in Clemson, S.C.
Day 2
Clemson, S.C. - Western Carolina's track & field teams earned three podium finishes Saturday Afternoon in the Tiger Paw Invitational. Carothers takes second place in the 200-meter run.
The sophomore Carothers posted another solid performance in the 200 dash with a time of 24.80 earning her the second-place finish.
Senior Manteo Mitchell posted a second place finish in the 200 with a time of 21.65 falling just a mere .06 from first place.
In the men's long jump event Alex Dollard finished in fifth place with a 6.85 meter jump.
In the women's triple jump event Tia Jones finished in fourth place with an 11.71meter jump.
The Catamounts return to action next weekend to participate in the Tiger invitational returning to Clemson, S.C., again for the second consecutive week.
Wofford ? Carolina Invitational
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Wofford men’s and women’s indoor track teams competed in the Dick Taylor-Carolina Invitational on Friday evening at the Eddie Smith Field House on the campus of UNC Chapel Hill. This was the last regular season indoor track meet before the Southern Conference Championships.
Freshman Kari Harris had a solid run in the women’s 3000 meter run finishing with a time of 11:47.14 setting a new personal best. Fellow freshman Caroline Burdette also had a solid showing in the women’s one mile running a season best time of 5:42.76 which also broke the school record.
On the men’s side, Bryan Smith set a new personal best in the men’s 400 meter dash as he ran a time of 52.87 seconds. The men’s 4x400 team of Elias Conits, David Jackson, Monier Abusaft and Bryan Smith set a new school record by nearly four seconds as they ran a time of 3:50.09 beating the previous record set in 2005 of 3:54.58.
The indoor track teams will return to the track on February 28 at Clemson for the Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships.
