SoCon Announces Women?s Track and Field Athletes of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Chattanooga track athlete Annelia Uys and Appalachian State field athlete Rebecca Hazeltine have been named this week’s Southern Conference Women’s Track and Field Athletes of the Week for all meets from Feb. 5-11, the league office announced Thursday. The track and field athletes of the week are voted on by the conference’s track and field head coaches.

 

Uys finished sixth in the Rod McCravy Memorial mile run held at the University of Kentucky with a personal best time of 4:57.41. The junior was competing in only her second race in the past two years.

 

Hazeltine finished second in the high jump at the Penn State Sykes-Sabock Challenge with a leap of 5’ 9.25”. The sophomore is currently ranked first in the SoCon in the high jump and is tied for the Mountaineer record. The Weddington, N.C., native is just three-quarters of an inch away from a NCAA regional qualifying mark. The award is Hazeltine’s second of the season.

 

Also nominated for this week’s award was Appalachian State track athlete Meg Gaffney.
