SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Chattanooga and Furman track athletes Chris Berry and Patrick Morgan and Appalachian State field athlete Malcolm Styers have been named this week’s Southern Conference Men’s Track and Field Athletes of the Week, the conference office announced Thursday. The track and field athletes of the week are voted on by the league’s track and field head coaches.
Berry competing in his first 3000-meter race, finished third at the Rod McCravy Memorial meet hosted by the University of Kentucky. His time of 8:10.28 set a new Mocs’ school record that was held previously by two-time SoCon Runner of the Year, Steven Kocis. Berry leads the conference 3000 rankings by nearly 13 seconds.
Morgan won the mile at the Rod McCravy Memorial. His time of 4:05.90 set a new personal best and breaks Furman's 31-year old record of 4:07.9 which was set back in 1978. The mark also leads the conference by over five seconds. The award is the seniors second of the season.
Styers placed fourth in the weight throw this weekend at the Penn State Sykes-Sabock Challenge with a mark of 57' 2". He also finished fifth in the shot put with a throw of 52' 3 3/4". He ranks first in the SoCon rankings in both events. ASU has now won all four field athlete of the week awards this season.
Also nominated for this week’s award were Appalachian State track athlete Josh Houser, Western Carolina track athlete Manteo Mitchell and The Citadel field athlete Quintin Turner.
