Davidson 5, Gardner-Webb 2

 

DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson men's tennis team got back on the winning track by taking four of the six singles spots on their way to a 5-2 win over Gardner-Webb on Tuesday afternoon at Knobloch Tennis Center.

 

Davidson, which improved to 2-4 on the year, picked up its second straight 5-2 win over Gardner-Webb after winning by the identical score last year. The Bulldogs fell to 1-5 on the season.

 

The Wildcats regrouped after playing back-to-back ranked opponents in Radford (69th) and South Carolina (51st) the last two matches with a solid showing in both singles and doubles play.

 

For the first time this year, Davidson captured the doubles point by taking the No. 1 and 2 positions, though the Bulldogs made them work for it.

 

Senior Scott Myers and freshman Calum Gee picked up their first win of the season as a duo with an 8-6 victory at No.1, while sophomore Walker Lyons teamed up with senior Brandon Byrd to seal up the doubles point by picking up a 9-7 decision at the No. 2 spot.

 

Myers and Gee continued their solid play on into singles action where they scored wins at the No. 2 and 3 singles positions. Both needed three-set affairs to prevail, dropping their second sets before coming through with third set wins.

 

Myers took a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 decision over Andrew Veeder for his third victory of the season, while Gee improved to 3-3 in his first year with the Wildcats by scoring a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 victory over Rafael Atmayer.

 

Also scoring singles wins on the afternoon was Arie Hefter and Tareq Alani. Hefter played his second match of the season at the No. 4 spot and took home a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Carlos Quijano.

 

Alani, playing in his third career collegiate match, rounded out the singles play by picking up a straight set 6-3, 6-2 win at the No. 6 position for his first victory as a Wildcat.

 

Davidson remains at home for a 10 a.m. match against USC Upstate on Saturday. The Wildcats took a 4-3 decision against the Spartans last year at home.
