Gooch Named Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Elon’s Damon Gooch has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for all matches through February 9 the league office announced Tuesday (Feb. 10).  Gooch went 4-3 in his first seven matches competing at No. 1 singles for the Phoenix.  The Player of the Week award is voted on by the league’s sports information directors. 

 

Gooch is currently ranked No. 6 in the Mideast Region singles rankings and No. 14 in doubles play with partner Philip Nemec.  Gooch has faced three nationally-ranked players in singles action and has faced five opponents from ranked teams this year.  His 4-3 start includes wins over the top singles players from Clemson, East Tennessee State, Old Dominion and South Carolina State.

 

The Phoenix (3-3) return to the court Saturday at 1:00 p.m. when they travel to face South Carolina.

 

Other top performers in the Southern Conference included Appalachian State’s Bobby Lake, The Citadel’s Alberto Diaz, Furman’s Bo Ladyman, Georgia Southern’s Jayraj Jadeja, UNC Greensboro’s Orcun Seyrek, and Wofford’s Tinus Van Wyk.
