No. 3 Cornell 32, Chattanooga 7
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Chattanooga wrestling team dropped a 32-7 dual meet to No. 3 Cornell in MacLellan Gym today. The Mocs got wins from junior Cody Cleveland and senior Seth Garvin to account for their seven points in the match. UTC falls to 11-8 on the year and 4-0 in Southern Conference action while Cornell improves to 6-2.
Freshman Demetrius Johnson came out with an aggressive start to his 125-pound match with No. 2 Troy Nickerson. After a quick takedown by Nickerson, Johnson escaped to move to 2-1 in the match. Johnson ignited the 1,000-plus fans in attendance with a takedown of his own for the 3-2 lead. The celebration was short-lived as Nickerson reversed the move and pinned Johnson at the 2:32 mark. The fall gave Cornell a 6-0 lead.
A major decision (20-6) by the Big Red’s Mike Grey, currently ranked No. 12 at 133, over sophomore Josh Statum put the Mocs in a 10-0 hole. Cleveland stopped the bleeding for Chattanooga with a major decision of his own at 141.
Cleveland, ranked No. 9 in the nation this week, defeated Cornell’s Corey Manson 12-3. Cleveland led 2-0 after the opening period and extended his lead to 6-2 following the second frame. An escape, two more takedowns and riding time gave Cleveland the 12-3 final score.
Cleveland’s win cut the Big Red lead to 10-4, but that was as close as Chattanooga would get. UTC freshman Dan Waddell lost a 10-6 decision to D.J. Meagher, while Mocs junior No. 20 Joey Knox fell to No. 5 Jordan Leen 8-2 in the next two matches.
Garvin continued his solid senior campaign with a 10-5 decision over John Basting. Garvin held a 2-0 lead after the first period, but Bastings came back to knot the score at 4-4 in the second. An escape, two take downs and riding time in the third frame gave Garvin the win.
Freshman Jason McCroskey dropped his match to Steve Anceravage, but put up a strong fight against the nation’s No. 6 wrestler at 174. Trailing 4-1 after the first period, McCroskey cut the lead to 5-3 with a takedown in the second. He scored an escape in the final frame but was unable to get the winning takedown as time expired.
Two straight technical falls at 184 and 197 put the match out of reach for the Mocs. Chattanooga returns to action on Feb. 13 when they travel to Ames, Iowa, for a 7:00 p.m. match against No. 2 Iowa State. The Mocs will face No. 22 Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa, the next night.
UTC’s final home match of the season is set for Monday, Feb. 23, at 6:00 p.m. against VMI in MacLellan Gym.
