Elon 4, Old Dominion 3

 

NORFOLK, Va. ? Damon Gooch rallied past Aleksandr Seleznev 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 at No. 1 singles to lift Elon to a thrilling 4-3 nonconference men’s tennis triumph over Old Dominion Saturday afternoon at the Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center.

The Monarchs’ (5-2) No. 43 duo of Seleznev and Tobias Fanselow edged the No. 49 combo of Gooch and Philip Nemec 8-6 at No. 1 doubles. Elon (1-2) received doubles victories by Chase Helpingstine and Oscar Podlewski (over Matt Fawcett and Krzysztof Muzalewski 8-5 at No. 2) and Alberto Rojas and Cody Stauffer MacDowell (over Yakov Diskin and Alex Funkhouser 8-6 at No. 3).

Helpingstine (over Diskin 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3) and Nemec (over Funkhouser 5-7, 6-4, 7-6(8) at No. 4) won singles bouts for the Phoenix. No. 80 Fanselow (over No. 120 Podlewski 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2), Fawcett (over Stauffer MacDowell 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5) and Muzalewski (over Rojas 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-4 at No. 6) claimed matches for Old Dominion.

 

 

BYU 4, Elon 3

 

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. ? Elon’s No. 120 Oscar Podlewski, Philip Nemec and Alberto Rojas all picked up singles wins, but No. 65 BYU edged the Phoenix 4-3 in the consolation contest at the Tribe Invitational men’s tennis tournament Saturday evening at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center on the William and Mary campus.

The No. 49 team of Nemec and Damon Gooch downed Evan Urbina and A.J. Young 8-4 at No. 1 doubles, but the Cougars pulled out victories at No. 2 and No. 3 to seize the doubles point. Cassidy Mears and Daniel Hwang beat Podlewski and Chase Helpingstine 8-4 at No. 2 and Thomas Shubert and Georgy Batrakov fended off Rojas and Cody Stauffer MacDowell 8-6 at No. 3.

Elon (1-3) and BYU (4-2) then went on to split the six singles matches. Podlewski (over Shubert 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2), Nemec (over Mears 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 at No. 4) and Rojas (over Hwang 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6) all won bouts for the Phoenix while Urbina (over Gooch 6-2, 7-6 (16-14) at No. 1), Roman Warias (over Helpingstine 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 at No. 3) and Batrakov (over Cody Stauffer MacDowell 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5) were successful for the Cougars.

 

 

College of Charleston 7, Presbyterian 0

 

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. --- The College of Charleston men’s tennis team blanked Presbyterian, 7-0 in the team’s 2009 dual match home opener on Saturday at College of Charleston Tennis Center.

 

With the win, the Cougars improve to 1-1 on the year, while Presbyterian falls to 0-1.

 

After sweeping the Blue Hose in Doubles action, the Cougars continued to control the match, as they swept singles play. Each CofC player picked up straight set victories in singles action.

 

The Cougars were led on the day by Omer Abramovich, who picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win at the number one spot, while at number two, Lukas Koncilia earned a 6-3, 6-3 win.

 

The College of Charleston returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 8th when they host Winthrop beginning at 11 a.m.

 

 

The Citadel 6, Presbyterian 1

 

CHARLESTON, S.C. ? The Citadel tennis team defeated the Presbyterian Blue Hose, 6-1, picking up their first season win on Saturday, Jan. 31 at the Earle Tennis Center on The Citadel’s campus.

 

The Bulldogs swept Presbyterian in doubles play to earn the first point of the match. Alberto Diaz and Yufo Sutantio teamed up against the Blue Hose’s Matthew Martin and Zachary Sprouse. After trailing 6-3, they rallied for a 7-9 victory. Michael Kociecki and Martin King defeated Presbyterian’s Patrick Fedilu and Michael Nicol with a shutout, 8-0. Derek Dickey and Frederic Petrilli also pulled out a 9-7 win after trailing most of the match up against Mark Cannatelli and Brad Luciuk of Presbyterian.

 

In singles action, the toughest win came with Diaz against the Blue Hose’s Fedilu. Diaz took the first set with 6-2 but Fedilu responded back with a score of 7-6, leading to a third set. Diaz and Fedilu battled hard and Diaz came out with the, 10-6 win.

 

Sutantio defeated Presbyterian’s Martin, 6-4, 7-6 while Kociecki caused heartbreak to the Blue Hose’s Nicol with a, 6-0, 6-3, win. Dickey put on another great performance as he defeated the Blue Hose’s Cannatelli. Freshman Tripp Larkin made a successful debut as he beat Brad Luciuk of Presbyterian.

 

The Blue Hose’s only point came when The Citadel’s Martin King fell to Zachary Sprouse, 6-2, 6-2, on No. 4 singles.
