Florida Atlantic 5, Wofford 2
BOCA RATON, Fla.- The Wofford men’s tennis team fell on Friday afternoon to Florida Atlantic by a 5-2 margin. The Terriers nearly escaped with the doubles point which proved to be a momentum changer in the match. Florida Atlantic is now 1-2 on the young season while the Terriers fall to 0-3.
The Terriers fell on court two by an 8-1 margin as Daniel Vardag and Joshua Scholl (FAU) def. Alan Donald and Paul Bartholomy (WOF) 8-1. However, Scott Collins and Tinus Van Wyk (WOF) def. Lawrence Harradine and Santiago Nieto (MFAU) 8-2 to even the doubles at one, leaving court number one as the deciding factor for the doubles point. Freshmen Stuart Robertson and Danny Manlow played well early on but a late break of serve gave Florida Atlantic the win and the doubles point.
The Terriers needed to win four of the remaining six singles matches to take the match but were only able to come up with two. Playing at the number four position, freshman Tinus Van Wyk picked up his second win of the year by a score of 6-3, 6-4 over Joshua School. Alan Donald was the remaining Terrier to pick up a win on the day as he defeated Eddie Majcher 6-3, 7-6 (4).
Eastern Kentucky 6, Chattanooga 1
RICHMOND, Ky. --- The Chattanooga men’s tennis team fell 6-1 to Eastern Kentucky Saturday in the Greg Adams Tennis Center. Chattanooga falls. to 0-3 on the year and the Colonels move to 2-2 overall.
The Mocs started out the day with a sweep of the doubles matches. Peter Sauska and Pavel Vostrikov tallied an 8-6 win at the top spot over Alec Das Izquierdo and Niklas Schroeder. At both No. 2 and No. 3, the matches were stretched out to 9-8 wins for Chattanooga at each.
In singles, the Colonels swept all six matches. Sauska at No. 1 and Vostrikov at No. 2 each fell in three sets. This is Chattanooga’s first loss to Eastern Kentucky in eight years.
The Mocs will return home to host Belmont next Saturday at the Hixson Racquet Club in a 1 p.m. match.
Oregon 5, Samford 2
EUGENE, Ore. - The Samford University men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision against the Oregon Ducks on Friday as the Bulldogs opened their 2009 dual-match season at the University of Oregon Student Tennis Complex. Samford's Brian Dushock and Carson Kadi both picked up victories in singles play Friday.
With the win, Oregon (5-1) completed a sweep in its day-night doubleheader held in Eugene, Ore. The Ducks also improved to 5-0 at home with the duo of victories.
Samford (0-1) dropped the doubles point to open the match with a 1-0 deficit as Oregon earned victories on courts No. 1 and No. 2. In the No. 3 doubles competition, the Bulldogs' combination of Oliver Reynolds and Carl Abalos rallied for a 9-7 victory over the Ducks' duo comprised of Duncan MacDonald-Korth and Jose' Izquierdo.
In singles play, Samford's Dushock breezed by Oregon's Marcos Verdasco, 6-3, 6-3, on court No. 1. The Bulldogs' Kadi also won his match on court No. 5 as the Ducks' Mike Myrhed pulled up lame with an injury and was forced to default the match.
Clemson 5, Elon 2
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. ? Elon’s Damon Gooch and Alberto Rojas posted singles victories, but No. 60 Clemson held off the Phoenix 5-2 in a semifinal meeting at the Tribe Invitational men’s tennis tournament Friday afternoon at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center on the William and Mary campus.
The Tigers advance to face No. 63 William and Mary in the championship match while Elon will battle No. 65 BYU in the consolation match. Both matches will take place at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. William and Mary defeated BYU 5-2 in their semifinal match Friday afternoon. The Phoenix will also visit Old Dominion at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Elon (0-2) drew first blood, picking up a win at No. 1 doubles when the No. 49 duo of Damon Gooch and Philip Nemec dispatched Rok Bizjak and Gera Boryachinskiy 8-3. Clemson (2-1) tied up the doubles standings when Ike Belk and Derek DiFazio decisioned Alberto Rojas and Cody Stauffer MacDowell 8-4 at No. 3. The Phoenix’s Chase Helpingstine and Oscar Podlewski found themselves serving for the match point, but ultimately fell to the Tigers’ Carlos Alvarez and Wesley Moran 9-8 (3) at No. 2 as Clemson seized the doubles point.
Boryachinskiy overcame Helpingstine 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles to fatten the Tigers’ lead to 2-0, but Gooch cut the difference in half by fashioning a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Bizjak at No. 1. Wins by Kevin Fleck (over Stauffer MacDowell 5-7, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5) and Alvarez (over No. 120 Podlewski 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2) clinched the match for Clemson. Kevin Galloway outdueled Nemec 6-2, 4-6, 10-8 at No. 4 to score the Tigers’ final point, Rojas upended DiFazio 7-5, 6-4 at No. 6 for the match’s last marker.
