College of Charleston 7, Presbyterian 0
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. -- The College of Charleston blanked Presbyterian, 7-0, in women’s tennis action at the College of Charleston Tennis Center at Patriots Point on Saturday.
With the win, the Cougars improved to 2-1 on the season, while Presbyterian fell to 0-2. The College of Charleston returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 8 when they play host Stetson at 9:30 a.m. and Winthrop at 12:45 p.m.
After the Cougars swept all three doubles match to grab a 1-0 lead, Holly Dowse downed Megan Davis 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3 singles for a 2-0 advantage.
Keely Mulligan, playing at No. 4 singles, earned a 6-0, 6-0 win over Cara Caruso. Link Keskosky beat Heather Isbell 6-0, 7-6 at No. 1, Laura Borza downed Abby Diminich 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2 and Amanda Schwarz earned a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Daryl Thompson at No. 6.
North Florida 5, Georgia Southern 2
STATESBORO, GA ? The Georgia Southern women’s tennis team dropped a tough decision, 5-2, Saturday afternoon (Jan. 31) to the North Florida Lady Ospreys. The Lady Eagles grabbed two competitive singles victories from sophomore Ali Beavers and junior Jessica Fuller in the loss that dropped them to 1-2 overall. The Lady Ospreys opened their 2009 dual match schedule this afternoon with the victory.
North Florida swept all three doubles matches to win the doubles point and take an early 1-0 advantage over Georgia Southern. The tandem of Ina Durcakova/Nikita Van Lierop clinched the doubles point for the Lady Ospreys at the two seed over Christine Caforio/Melanie Rolle. Caforio/Rolle kept the match close and trailed 5-4 before Durcakova/Van Lierop pulled away and took the match, 8-4. At the one position, Beavers/Kristi Kegerreis battled hard against Aline Berkenbrock/Raquel Castro, leading 6-5. But the Lady Osprey broke the Lady Eagles and kept serve to take the match, 8-6.
Georgia Southern earned two singles victories from Beavers and Fuller from the two and four seeds, respectively. Beavers dropped her first set, 5-7, but crushed Van Lierop in the second, 6-0, to head into a match tiebreaker. It was a back-and-forth affair in the tiebreak, but Beavers battled and came out on top, 10-6, to take the match. Fuller downed Holton at the four seed in a three set battle. Fuller easily took her first set, 6-3, but dropped the second set, 1-6, to send the match into a third set. Fuller broke Holton twice in the third to secure a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 victory.
The Lady Eagles continue this two-match home streak tomorrow, February 1, when they welcome Hampton. First serve is slated for 12 p.m.
Elon 7, North Carolnia Central 0
ELON, Va. ? Elisa Simonetti, Melissa Wolf, Whitney Butcher, Laura Graybill, Lauren Sessoms and Jessica Margolis all succeeded in singles, pacing Elon to a 7-0 nonconference women’s tennis triumph over North Carolina Central in the Phoenix’s home opener Saturday morning at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
Simonetti stopped Kateryna Chorna 6-3, 3-1 retired at No. 1, Wolf won over Ashley Rogers 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2, Butcher beat Tatiana Velasquez 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3, Graybill ousted Maria Medina 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4, Sessoms toppled Antionette Spain 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 and Margolis bested Mari Sinclair 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6.
In doubles action, the teams of Wolf and Daleen Kloppers (over Chorna and Velasquez 8-3 at No. 1), Graybill and Hayley Wahl (over Media and Rogers 8-1 at No. 2) and Butcher and Margolis (over Spain and Ashley McRae 8-0 at No. 3) all emerged victorious.
The Phoenix (1-2) will return to the friendly confines of the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center to host North Carolina A&T at 2:30 p.m. this Saturday. The Eagles (0-2) will visit UNC Pembroke at 1 p.m. next Saturday.
Elon 7, North Carolina A&T 0
ELON, N.C. ? Elisa Simonetti, Melissa Wolf, Sally Wilkey, Laura Graybill, Lauren Sessoms and Jessica Margolis all picked up singles victories, propelling Elon to a 7-0 non-league women’s tennis win over North Carolina A&T Saturday afternoon ? the Phoenix’s second victory of the day ? at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
Simonetti dispatched Shondra Redfern 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1, Wolf overcame Winnie Quick 6-1, 5-7, 10-7 at No. 2, Wilkey topped Nina Henry 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3, Graybill defeated Jaymee Jones 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4, Sessoms stymied Azeib Nigatu 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 and Margolis beat Danielle McCaskill 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6.
In doubles play, the combos of Simonetti and Whitney Butcher (over Redfern and Nigatu 8-2 at No. 1), Graybill and Sessoms (over Jones and Henry 8-2 at No. 2) and Wilkey and Margolis (over Quick and McCaskill 8-3 at No. 3) all won.
Elon (2-2) will return to the friendly confines of the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center next weekend to host East Carolina (11 a.m. Saturday), Winston-Salem State (3:30 p.m. Saturday) and Radford (1 p.m. Sunday). The Aggies (0-2) will head to Coastal Carolina next Saturday to battle both Western Carolina (Noon) and Coastal Carolina (3 p.m.).
