Bulldogs Down Vikings, Fall to Bobcats at Ohio Duals
Athens, Ohio - The Citadel wrestling team split their action on Friday as they fell to Ohio, 31-3, and defeated Cleveland State, 24-13, at the Ohio University duals.
The morning started well against the host Bobcats, as freshman Giazzai Segarra defeated Kyle Ciccarello in the 125-pound weight class, 7-4, to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 team lead. The Bobcats then took over however, as they would win the remaining nine matches to trump The Citadel, 32-3. Ohio would get wins via technical fall and three major decisions to thwart the Bulldogs. Freshman Turtogtokh Luvsandorj dropped a tough match as he was outdueled, 3-1, in overtime by Ohio's Clay Tucker. The Bobcats' Kevin Christensen followed that with another tough match, defeating Derek Sickel of The Citadel, 5-2. Ohio has three wrestlers currently ranked in the Top 30 of WrestlingReport.com
The latter dual went much better for the Bulldogs as they would take down Cleveland State by the score of 24-13. Segarra would earn his second victory of the day to lead things off by taking down Clevleand State's Zachary Zupanic, 9-5, at the 125-pound weight class. Freshman Dustin Paridon then followed in his first dual meet start of his career by taking down Vikings grappler Zech Huff, 7-5, at 133, to give The Citadel a 6-0 lead. Nick LaFevre and Pierre Frazile would follow suit for the Bulldogs taking down their opponents by the scores of 4-2 and 5-2, in the 141 and 149-pound weight classes respectively. Luvsandorj and Derek Sickel would suffer tough one point losses each in their matches at 157 and 165 to cut The Citadel lead to 12-6. However J.C. Oddo at 174 and Odie Delaney at 197 would pin their opposition to seal the win for the Bulldogs and give them their first dual action win of the season.

Alex Radsky Earns Title at Davidson Open
DAVIDSON, N.C. ? Junior Alex Radsky earned his first tournament title, winning at 133 pounds to lead the Davidson wrestling team in the Davidson Open on Saturday at Baker Sports Complex. Junior Charlie Wolff (heavyweight) and senior Ben Altman (125) also placed in their respective classes.
A total of 108 wrestlers competed in the tournament.
Radsky won all three of his matches, earning his first-round victory with a pin in 2:30. In the quarterfinals, Radsky earned a 6-1 decision over Jared Jones of No. 24 Virginia Tech and then battled for a 3-1 decision over Clint Spencer (Newberry-Unattached) in the championship match.
“It was a great day for Alex, and this win was something he really needed for his confidence coming off of an injury,” said head coach Bob Patnesky. “This should kick-start him as we move ahead in the season.”
Wolff ultimately placed second after getting pinned in the championship round by Dustin Porter, who was competing unattached from Gardner-Webb. Wolff went 3-1 on the day with one pin. He advanced out of the first round with a 3-1 decision, and was then able to outlast Josh Gibson (Newberry-unattached) in the quarterfinals. Wolff earned the victory with four seconds of riding time after the contest went the distance in double overtime. In the semifinal round, Wolff battled Matt Wade, also unattached from Newberry, and eventually pinned him after 6:49.
“Charlie has the potential to be a very, very good wrestler,” said Patnesky. “He proved today that he can compete at a high level.”
Altman earned a major decision in his first match, but suffered a technical fall to eventual second-place finisher Michael Slaughter of Gardner-Webb. Altman rallied though, earning a major decision over Brett Boston (Appalachian State-unattached) and a 12-8 decision over Chris Jones (SMU) to place third.
Joining Radsky in the 133-pound bracket was freshman Scott Ray, who finished fourth after going 2-2 for the day. Ray lost a 4-2 decision to eventual finalist Spencer, but advanced in the consolation bracket with a pair of technical falls before dropping a 9-2 decision to Jones in the third-place match.
Others competing for Davidson included freshman Matt Zarth (1-2) at 125 pounds, junior Vitaly Radsky (1-2) and senior Ben Thompson (0-2) at 141, senior Carl Sandercock (0-2) at 149, junior Joe McGinley (1-2) and freshman Brent Mowry (2-2) at 157, sophomore Jorge Estrada (2-2, 1 pin) at 174, freshman Ike Crews (1-2) at 184 and senior Mark Jeevratnam at 197.
“Overall, it was a great day for our team,” said Patnesky. “Some guys did not do as well as they hoped, but others got some big wins. At this point, it’s important that we build confidence, so everyone believes that they can compete at a high level and that they are capable of winning every time they step on the mat.”
The Wildcats will return to action on Friday, Dec. 18 when they host defending Southern Conference champion Chattanooga in their first conference dual of the season.

VMI Wrestling Bested at Tri-Meet by Rutgers and Princeton
PRINCETON, N.J. - The VMI wrestling team dropped a pair of dual meets against tough opposition on Saturday, falling 33-6 to Princeton and 45-0 to Rutgers in a tri-meet hosted at Princeton's Dillon Gym.
The Keydets (0-2) managed a pair of wins against the host Tigers (2-1), as Ronnie Ellsworth scored a 3-1 decision over Charles Fox at 197 lbs., while heavyweight Josh Wine, wrestling his first match of the season, scored a 6-0 blanking against Stephen Turner.
"We had a couple of positives today, with getting Josh (Wine) and Ronnie (Ellsworth) back out there," said VMI head coach John Trudgeon. "Josh had just five days of practice before getting out there, and he looked pretty sharp. He had enough juice, and wrestled a good match. Ronnie had been out the past couple of weeks, so it was good to get him back as well, and he wrestled well to pick up a win. As a whole, we struggled technically today, and were doing things that aren't going to lead to success at this level. We have to pull it together, and hopefully next week's home dual will get our guys excited to do that."
Keydet wrestlers dropped five straight decisions to open the match against Princeton, including narrow losses by John Pope at 125 (8-5) and David Yost at 141 (2-0). A VMI forfeit at 165 lbs. followed, while back-to-back pins at 174 and 184 from Travis Erdman and Kurt Brendel, respectively, preceded VMI's two wins to round out the match.
Against the Scarlet Knights (5-3), VMI managed just three decisions, coming as Conor Black dropped a 11-5 contest at 165, while Andrew Szymborski and Evan Dill fell 7-3 at 174 and 3-1 at 184, respectively. The Keydets were pinned three times and lost by forfeit while losing four other major decisions to account for the final margin.
VMI Wrestling returns to action on Friday evening, playing host to Gardner-Webb in the team's home opener at 7:30 p.m. at the Thunderdome.
