Cornell claims 2009 Southern Scuffle title, UNCG places three
GREENSBORO, NC ? After two days of wrestling and 828 matches, the team from Cornell walked away with the 2009 UNCG Southern Scuffle championship and claimed their second consecutive team title at the event. The Big Red also won three individual titles, as Kyle Dake, Mack Lewness and Cam Simaz came away with titles. UNCG had three wrestlers place as sophomore Peter Sturgeon won his first two matches of the second day before finishing in eighth place. True freshmen Eric Chandler and Caylor Williams also came in eighth place for the Spartans.
Chandler, wrestling at 125 pounds, recorded a pair of pins over Navy’s Allen Stein and Michigan’s Sean Boyle on his way to finishing in eighth. At 197 pounds, Williams pinned William Widener from George Mason in just over a minute and then scored a 6-2 decision over Zach Bennett from North Carolina. Sturgeon had a pair of wins as a heavyweight, including a 5-4 decision over NC State’s Eloheim Palma.
In the championship finals, Angel Escobedo, ranked second nationally from Indiana, won by injury default at 125 pounds over No. 1 Troy Nickerson after Nickerson injured his shoulder in the first period. At 133 pounds, No. 2 Jayson Ness from Minnesota used a pair of takedowns to score a 7-3 decision over No. 11 Dan Mitcheff from Kent State.
In a tight match at 141 pounds, No. 5 Kyle Dake from Cornell defeated No. 6 Mike Thorn from Minnesota. Dake recorded a third period takedown to tie the match at four and rode Dake out the rest of the period to receive a point for riding time and win, 5-4. At 149 pounds, No. 10 Matt Kyler was leading 3-0 at the beginning of the third period when Penn’s Cesar Grajales was forced to injury default.
In the closest bout of the evening, No. 7 Thomas Scotton from North Carolina scored a 2-1 decision at 157 pounds in the fourth tiebreaker over No. 11 Kurt Kinser from Indiana. No. 4 Dustin Schlatter from Minnesota scored a pair of takedowns to record a 5-1 decision over No. 18 Rick Schmelyun at 165 pounds.
At 174 pounds, No. 1 Mack Lewness scored a takedown in the second and third period as he went on to defeat No. 4 Chris Henrich from Virginia, 6-1. Chris Honeycutt, wrestling unattached from Edinboro, defeated No. 3 Dustin Kilgore, 7-5. Honeycutt trailed 5-3 late in the third period, but scored a takedown and two near-fall points to win the match.
No. 6 Cam Simaz from Cornell scored four takedowns and received a point for riding time as he scored a major decision at 197 pounds over Ohio’s Erik Schuth. In the final match of the evening, No. 6 Nathan Everhart from Indiana had a second period takedown as he defeated Navy’s Scott Steele, 3-2

ASU Wrestling Finishes 24th at Southern Scuffle
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Savva Kostis (Boone, N.C./Watauga) recorded four wins to lead Appalachian State University wrestling to a 24th place finish at the highly competitive Southern Scuffle on Tuesday and Wednesday in Greensboro.
Kostis won three matches by pinfall and one my major decision to lead all ASU wrestlers with four wins. He pinned Cal State Bakersfield's Anthony Box in his first match and downed Luke Mellmer of Minnesota in his second match. After a loss dropped him to the consolation bracket, he pinned Virginia Tech's Taylor Knapp and be Army's James Rafferty 13-4.
Chris Collura (Spencerport, N.Y./Spencerport) and Brock Durfee (Sherrills Ford, N.C./ Bandys) were the only other Mountaineers to have multiple wins, as each had two wins.
Zack Mastro (Naples, Fla./Palmetto Ridge), Carter Downs (Tequesta, Fla./Jupiter Christian), Dylan Temple (Marietta, Ga./Walton), Paul Glover (Rochester, N.Y./Spencerport) and Ken Altarac (Johnsonville, N.Y./Lasalle Institute) all picked up a victory for the Apps.
Appalachian is back in action when they travel to Virginia Tech on Jan. 4.
Bulldogs Complete Action at Southern Scuffle
Greensboro, N.C. - The Citadel completed action this afternoon at the annual two-day Southern Scuffle. 14 Bulldog wrestlers competed at this year's event, hosted by UNC Greensboro.
Odie Delaney went 2-2 with a pin while Derek Royster and Zane Newton each registered a major decision to highlight the Bulldogs' performance. Several Citadel wrestlers competed against top level national competetion: Turtogtokh Luvsandorj faced returning All-American Matt Moley from Bloomsburg at 157, Kelby Smith battled nationally ranked Steve Bosak of Cornell at 184, Odie Delaney squared off against nationally ranked Jesse Strawn of Old Dominion and against returning All-American Cam Simaz of Cornell at 197 and Ivan Muller matched up against Minnesota's nationally ranked Ben Berhow at Heavyweight. The Citadel finished with 12.5 points and a 27th place team finish.
Also competing in the tournament, with their records, were: Tyler Sim 1-2, Richard Alarcon 0-2, Giazzi Segarra 0-2, Jordan Dix 1-2, Derek Royster 1-2, Pierre Frazile 1-2, Kirby Thompson 1-2, Zane Newton 1-2, Turtogtokh Luvsandorj 1-2, J.C. The Citadel returns to action on Satuday, Jan. 9 as they travel to their first road Southern Conference dual at UNC Greensboro at 11 a.m.
Minwell Still Alive in Midlands Wrestlebacks
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team sits in 15th place after the first day of the Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill., today. Junior Tom Minwell is the lone Moc still alive and is set to compete in the heavyweight wrestleback tomorrow.
Minwell defeated Triton's John Burke 12-0 in the opening round of the championship bracket. He was pinned by Missouri's Mark Ellis, the No. 6 seed in the tournament, in the second round. He posted two more wins in the wrestleback bracket and is set to take on top-seeded Aaron Anspach on Wednesday.
Senior Josh Statum collected a win in the 133 wrestleback, pinning Clarion's Jay Ivanco at 2:41. Freshman Dean Pavlou posted three wins before falling out of the 149 wrestleback. Freshman Jake Young, seeded No. 9 at 174, won his first match against St. Cloud State's Shamus O'Grady 6-5. He went on to drop his next two matches. '
Sophomore Jason McCroskey also had a solid showing, defeating Iowa's Vinnie Wagner 8-3 in the second round of the championship bracket at 184. He fell to top-seeded Max Askren from Missouri 7-5 but won another match in the wrestleback before being eliminated. He second win of the day was a pin at 1:33 over Northern Iowa's Scott Hazen.
The Mocs will be back in action on Jan. 16 when they host Missouri at Maclellan Gym on Jan. 16. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m. (E.S.T.) against the top-25 Tigers.
Mocs Finish Midlands Championships in 17th Place
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team concluded the 2009 Midlands Championships in 17th place overall.
Junior Tim Minwell was the only Moc in action today, competing the heavyweight wrestleback bracket. Minwell took on top-seeded Aaron Anspach of the Lions WC and was pinned in the third period (6:48).
The Mocs will be back in action on Jan. 16 when they host Missouri at Maclellan Gym on Jan. 16. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m. (E.S.T.) against the top-25 Tigers.
