CSN Names Fabulous Fifty, Russell Top Freshman

Brent Russell Named FCS Freshman of the Year by College Sporting News
Defensive Lineman selected as one of "Fabulous Fifty" players for 2009

CHICAGO, Ill. -- Redshirt-freshman defensive lineman Brent Russell was named the 2009 Freshman of the Year for the Division I Football Championship Subdivision by the College Sporting News. The annual edition of CSN’s “Fabulous Fifty Team” includes 45 players on offense and defense, and honors five individuals for their performances on offense, defense, offensive line, in the playoffs and as a first-year player.

Russell (Comer, Ga./Madison County) was selected to the First Team All-Southern Conference team by the SoCon Sports Media Association, becoming only the third Eagle this decade to earn those honors as a freshman. He was the only rookie selected to this year's SoCon top squad and one of only two selected overall.

A second-team All-Conference pick by the SoCon coaches, Russell had a team-best 6.0 sacks which put him in a tie for 53rd nationally, the second-highest ranked freshman in the country in that category. Russell also appeared in the national rankings tied for 83rd in tackles for a loss (11.0). Starting in all 11 games, Russell finished the 2009 season with 48 tackles as well as three blocked kicks. He had one interception and forced a fumble.

CSN Names Three Phoenix to All-American Teams

CHICAGO, Ill. -- Elon senior receiver Terrell Hudgins was named to the College Sporting News FCS Fabulous Fifty All-American Team for the third consecutive season while senior offensive guard David Harrison and senior defensive back Karlos Sullivan were honorable mention picks.  Hudgins was one of 10 unanimous selections this season.

The trio led Elon to a 9-3 overall record as well as a 7-1 Southern Conference ledger and its first-ever appearance in the FCS playoffs.

In 2009, Hudgins finished as the runner-up for the Walter Payton Award. Along the way the standout receiver caught a FCS-record 123 passes for a Southern Conference-record 1,633 yards. The Rocky Mount, N.C. native led the nation in receiving yards per game (136.1) and receptions per game (10.3) this season. He picked up one SoCon Player of the Week accolade and was named a first-team All-SoCon member by both the coaches and media in 2009. Hudgins also collected two national player of the week honors during the campaign. He was also named to All-America teams by The Sports Network, the American Football Coaches Association, The Associated Press and the Walter Camp Football Foundation this season.

Hudgins concluded his career with the Phoenix as the holder of 10 NCAA records, including nine set during the 2009 season. Four of the records were held by the legendary Jerry Rice who played at Mississippi Valley State from 1981-84. He also holds numerous Elon and SoCon marks.

Harrison, who hails from Charlotte, N.C., has been a first-team All-Southern Conference choice each of the past two seasons.  He was a second-team pick to The Sports Network's All-America team this year.  A team captain, Harrison started 45 games for the Phoenix and earned the team's Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman honor in 2008.

Sullivan, of Greenville, S.C., was a first-team All-SoCon selection this season after leading the Phoenix with five interceptions.  In 11 games, Sullivan compiled 35 total tackles, broke up three passes and recovered one fumble.  He earned one SoCon Defensive Player of the Week nod during the 2009 campaign.

THREE APPS RECEIVE ALL-AMERICA RECOGNITION FROM CSN: Headlined by Offensive Player of the Year Edwards, College Sporting News selected three Appalachian State University players to its 2009 Fabulous 50 All-America team. Joining Edwards on the CSN team are linebacker D.J. Smith and safety Mark LeGree.
