SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Western Carolina's Benny Davis, a sophomore sprinter, and teammate Alex Dollard, a senior, have been named the Southern Conference Men's Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week for all meets December 3-5. The selections are made by the league's track & field coaches.
Davis, a native of Morganton, N.C., set an indoor personal record in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.87 and took second place at the Appalachian Invitational. He also ran the lead-off leg of the 4x400-meter relay with a 48 second split. The Catamounts took second place in the event.
Charlotte, N.C., native Dollard won the long jump at the Appalachian Invitational with a distance of 23' 6". His leap of 45' ¼" in the triple jump was a personal best, and he was the top finisher in the event for Western Carolina.
The Catamounts return to action in 2010 when they compete at the Tar Heel Invitational January 8 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Other top field performers included:
Appalachian State junior Malcolm Styers, who placed first at the Appalachian Invitational with a 58' 2" in the hammer throw, setting a new personal best in the event. Styers also took second place in the shot put with a distance of 51' 2".
